by ice cream (not verified) on Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:45 AM PSTWorking in a western style of art, does not have to mean rejecting or overlooking ours, it is just a way of expressing yourself. These are different schools of thoughts, and one may prefer one platform over the other.
-
If one were to subscribe to your theory,(that everyone has to follow whatever art they are born into), then, they have to reject the influences of other western art also. Meaning, we had to do away with all our pop culture as well. So by this token, you'll have to reject works of Anoushiravan Rohani, Googoosh, Heideh, Viguen, Aref,....why? Because they have borrowed from western elements, such as harmony, and using non-Iranian instruments, eg., the piano. You see the point that I am getting at? Where do we draw a line of what is acceptable or not in art inspiration and technique?
-
And it is not just us that gets inspiration from others, it can go both ways. ( eg. Van Gogh by Japanese prints), or the influence of Chinese art on how the western artists rendered their still life.
-
Art needs to be free and evolving. Here, I want to emphasize my affection, and esteem towards the traditional Persian art regarding its sophistication and mathematical complexity. However, I do not believe that one has to limit themselves in certain platform or manner of expression.

Nice finds. Pomegranate and pomegranate juice represent body/soul and blood. I also decipher religious "five tan" from this picture. A hand with bloody stained fingers.
Interesting in one frame, this bloody hand has middle finger in up position while offering a pomegranate (body/soul and blood).
I do not know to make out a progressive or a backward message here.

The whole thing is CRAP.
by Crapollah (not verified) on Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:10 PM PSTThe whole thing is CRAP. Its story and art both CRAP. It's hard to get 5 people in a room with a table and few pomegranate??? are you kidding me?? these people just need to fold this CRAP and try again. If it is any good they'll get encouraged. Just like any other artist. But if it is CRAP and you keep insisting it is art then you'll get a boat load of CRAP!

by Sam-I-am (not verified) on Wed Dec 12, 2007 11:30 AM PSTSO far with "Baba Kara"and immitation music converted to digital sound(farangi like) we did not get any international attention,
Maybe this way we can,
This is art and all artist has to do is to Express themselves ,Story might be tasteless(According to ours) But this is art ,it must have some critics too. Most of people with negative comments or some positive have not seen this theater How can they make comment like(baba jamesh kon) or so on..any Idea how hard it is to just assemble small theater company together hmmmmmmmmmm they might not be up to your standards but give them time to better themselves.I wish all of them good luck and keep on going.
Subjective nature.
by Hafiz (not verified) on Wed Dec 12, 2007 07:21 AM PSTSubjective nature. Do you even know what it means? you sure you don't mean objective nature? Are you talking about art as a whole or crap vs good?
to redwine: copying vs inspiration
by ice cream (not verified) on Wed Dec 12, 2007 07:07 AM PSTI can understand people that don't like this or any other art, and who can argue with them, given it's subjective nature. But since your reasoning for rejecting it, was because it was a copy, has many flaws.
-
First ,almost all artists get inspired (subconsciously, or consciously) from other artist's works, and a lot of them, have copied the other artist's work in their own styles. It is called inspiration.
-
Second, Iranian art has been influenced heavily by the western art since mid to late Qajar period. For example works such as Kamol-ol-molk are indications of that, not only in terms of the medium, but also the lighting and posing as well. If you were judging arts based on the fact that it is a copy, you'll have to reject many other famous western artists also, because you don't see it as inspiration. Since music is an art form, then you'll also have to reject ALL non-traditional Iranian music, because they're copies also. And don't stop there. Since fashion is an art form also, based on your analogy, we need to get rid of all our clothing because it is a copy of western clothing. Yeap, are you ready to go back to your "kolah namadi"?
-
-It is one thing to copy, and another to get inspired. I can see a lot of inspiration in his work from many different artists and eras, however, I liked it. And I equally understand if someone just hates it.
