Auschwitz was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. It was the largest of the German concentration camps, consisting of Auschwitz I (the Stammlager or base camp); Auschwitz II-Birkenau (the Vernichtungslager or extermination camp); Auschwitz III-Monowitz, also known as Buna-Monowitz (a labor camp); and 45 satellite camps >>> Wikipedia

JJ's recent photo essay
by Ghahremani on Wed Sep 08, 2010 04:33 PM PDTI saw the pictures, read the readers' comments, and in the end could not believe that the simplest of human reactions had never surfaced. How amazing!
Of course it's a beautiful essay, definitely informative and thought provoking. But didn't anyone feel sad? It's such a long time since it happened, yet we are still arguing over the numbers! These were not all soldiers, in fact, most of them just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were not the aggressor, but rather innocent citizens who shared the same belief. Who cares what each of our beliefs are? We're talking about innocent lives! These victims were you and me and our parents and our children. I looked at the pictures, read the captions and felt a horrible chill. Amazing how little I knew even after all the articles, films and talks. You don't have to be Jewish to feel for mankind. Please tell me I wasn't the only one who felt a huge lump in my throat!

This is precisely what happens when a power hungry crazed dictator with illusions of world domination and "wiping" other Nations "off the map of the earth" is given the oppurtunity to be armed, let alone build/buy a nuclear bomb.

World War II casualty statistics vary greatly. Estimates of total dead range from 50 million to over 70 million. The sources cited on this page document an estimated death toll in World War II of 62 to 78 million, making it the deadliest war ever. When scholarly sources differ on the number of deaths in a country, a range of war losses is given, in order to inform readers that the death toll is disputed. Civilians killed totaled from 40 to 52 million, including 13 to 20 million from war-related disease and famine. Total military dead: from 22 to 25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 5 million prisoners of war.

by Hoshang Targol on Wed Sep 08, 2010 02:11 PM PDTjust soooo depressing.
Jewish Holocust 6 millions.
Soviet Losses from Hitler's invasion 20 millions.
Soviet people killed during Stalin's "modernization" 12 to 14 millions.
African slaves perished during the "Middle Passage" 15 to 20 millions.
Victims of Irish Famin 2 to 3 millions.
America Indians vanished by white settlers 10 to 12 millions.
Armenian Genocide 2 to 3 millions.
Gypsies( through out their history), Rawanda ( 90's), Cambodia( 70's), People's Republic of China during "Cultural Revolution," Congo at this very moment, .....there just seems to be no end to it.
And we call ourselves ASHRAF MAKHLOGHAT! what a joke.
auschwitz lowered numbers by 3 Million
by verytass on Wed Sep 08, 2010 01:36 PM PDTFACT: auschwitz lowered its numbers by 3 Million 2 years ago!
However there is never been any mention of it on the media!!!
Fact: these camps were all under the stalin control and all numbers came from them the Stalin soviets. They were used for propaganda and their numbers have never been validated since.
Fact: use of gas to exterminate has not to been proven and there is no residual amount in the "extermination" ares. The Zyklon B traces do not exist on the "death" chambers. Although there is no proof, either way Zyklon B was a pesticide and was used to control disease carrying pests. You can argue with thousands of people gathering there, you need a strong way to kill all parasites.
Fact: anyone who makes a similar post as mine and raised these questions will be jailed in Germany!!!

Let's remeber Gypsies too ...
by reader1 on Wed Sep 08, 2010 12:48 PM PDTIt is sad that nobody mentions a word about Gypsies and other victims of the Holocaust. I wish there was also a memorial for the five million others who were also persecuted, tortured, tattooed and killed by Natzis. The Gypsies losses were greater than any other group of victims except Jews but hardly anyone mentions or recognizes this historical fact.

A very apt photo essay, thanks JJ
by Hoshang Targol on Wed Sep 08, 2010 12:21 PM PDTGood sense of details, reminded me of those photo essays in GRANTA. A few months back I was reading this account of "life" in Auschwitz, by the late great Italian writer Primo Levi : " Survival in Auschwits," somehow the buildings in these picture looks much cleaner than his description in the book.
I thought about translating the book to Persian ( it's only about 160 pages), maybe we could publish the Persian translation here, on this site? Any one for TARJOMEH'NEGARY GOROHY? Just a thought.
P.S. Primo Levy committed suicide 1987, he was having these recurrent nightmares, in which he would talk to other folks and no one would remember Holocust.

by Saideh Pakravan on Wed Sep 08, 2010 11:46 AM PDTThis is a moving, heartbreaking, photo essay about the abomination that tops all others. As always, the fact that you give context, your own before and after, gives it immediacy. Seeing the pretty city makes if even more harrowing to remember what happened 70 m. from there. But oh the idiotic comments! I have to slap my forehead when I read, "If we talk about this, why don't we talk about other genocides?" "I was in the library and saw there were so many books about this..." (surely the world Jewish conspiracy at work here) and, did I read this right? "We talk about this because the Nazis didn't have time to clean up, otherwise no one would ever have known." etc. Mash'allah, adam nemishim. Ahmadinejad's got nothing on us!

It does make you feel for what many Jews in and out of Israel think and their current mindset. However, I cant help but think that this tragedy is being exploited these days for pure dirty politics. politicians and opportunists with agenda are doing a great disservice and spitting on the graves of millions of Jews who perished at the hands of evil.

by Onlyiran on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:56 AM PDTother mass murders and genocides in more recent times. Six million people have been killed in Congo in the past decade. And no one seems to care about them. It's a genocide that the world is sweeping under the rug because the world's high tech industry needs the raw material Coltan that is mined in the Congo and that is being fought over and controlled by the rebels who commit these crimes against humanity. Our computers and cell phones all rely on this blood tainted material...and no one seems to care. Girls as young as seven being gang raped, mothers and daughters raped in front of their families...and no one seems to lift a finger...shame on humanity.
And of course, we should not forget other mass murders and deaths, of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (more than a million dead there), The Khmer Rouge, Rowanda, etc.
And the Israelis should look at these camps and reflect on the crimes that they are committing against people under their occupation, especially in the world's biggest concentration camp, Gaza.

by asadabad on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:44 AM PDTBy numerous nations planning to bomb Iran, do you mean US/Israel? Out of 192 countries in the UN that can hardly be described as numerous.
Even so, preemptive war is illegal. If it is nuked or bombed conventionally, it is a terrible crime regardless. Seymour Hersh and Phillip Giraldi both wrote about secret Pentagon plans to hit Iran with thermonuclear bombs. Michel Chussodovsky from Global Research exposed it as well. The plan is a reality.
Of course it is about the Holocaust. Everyday Israel supporters come out supporting an attack on Iran, because Iran is "Nazi Germany"! The same thing was said about Iraq, now 1-3 million Iraqis are dead/wounded thanks to the US and the Israel supporters.
The Iranian government doesnt have a good human rights record, however its abuses pale in comparison to the horrendous injustices being committed by the United States and Israel. That probably explains why Iranians who support the IRI are less vocal in condemning IRI compared to US/Israel.
I would still like to hear what you guys think about Elie Wiesel and his campaign to silence the memory of the millions of Roma/Gypsies murdered in the Holocaust. For example, Wiesel lobbied to exclude the Roma people at the Washington DC Holocaust memorial. That is a Holocaust denier! He should be placed in jail like others in Europe who deny the Holocaust.

What on earth are you talking about? Who is talking about dropping nuclear bombs on Iran because of the Holocaust? There are discussions among numerous nations of bombing Iran's nuclear production facilities to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. That is not about the Holocaust and no one is seriously talking about using nuclear weapons on Iran now or at any time.
Uber-Islamist
by Fred on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:13 AM PDTBy definition Islamists are ignorant Anti-Semite morons. But there are Islamists who stand head and shoulders above their Islamist brethrens; these are uber-Islamists like this one:
“Jews celebrate, every year. Through their Festival ofPurim/Yurim, Jews gloat about killing about 75,000 Persian men, women and children in cities of Hamedan, Shoush, Parse, and Babylon.
You do the math, given the population size then and now, which is worse in numbers? Purim or Holocaust?”
JJ
by asadabad on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:10 AM PDTMy point isn't just that injustice should be condemned roundly. My argument extends to the fact that the Holocaust must not be used to justify other crimes, i.e. Palestinian extermination.
Do you realize that Iran may be hit with a few nuclear bombs because of the "Holocaust card"? What do you think of that?
Regarding the "Holocaust uniqueness doctrine", my criticism of the Holocaust industry is that many Jewish intellectuals downplay or deny other exterminations for their own gain. For example, Elie Wiesel downplays/ignores the extermination of the Roma/Gypsies during the Holocaust in order to monopolize the Jewish claim of victimhood. Now you tell me, who is the real Holocaust denier?
Javadagha
by DW Duke on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:03 AM PDTYou don't report the story and celebration of Purim accurately. The celebration of Purim is a celebration of the survival of the Jews from those, through the deception of Haman, were to kill them. The king issued a decree permitting the Jews to defend themselves from those who were going to kill them. The celebration is the survival of the Jews.
If anyone is interested in the real story of Purim, here is a link.

I was at the main public
by Sargord Pirouz on Wed Sep 08, 2010 08:55 AM PDTI was at the main public library yesterday and I happened to walk past the isle and bookcases containing the Holocaust collection. I was dumbstruck at the sheer size of the collection. There were literally hundreds of books and nearly a hundred DVDs. I believe it is the largest collection of any single subject in the entire library. What came to mind was the industry and money behind this informational effort. Simply amazing, by any reckoning.
