Trip of a lifetime

Photo essay: 1974 family tour of Europe and Egypt

by Jahanshah Javid
26-Feb-2009

In the summer of 1974 my parents planned a family trip to Europe with my three sisters and I. We visited Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland and Italy. On the way back to Iran, we spent several days in Cairo. Nearly all the pictures were taken by my mother whom I thank eternally for capturing these wonderful moments. I remember how thrilling it was to see for the first time the world beyond our little hometown on the Persian Gulf.

Your Geneva pics

Funny how the Geneva pictures seem to have been taken only yesterday.... Nothing has changed in this city ever since those shots were made. Those same places exist, and they're still exactly the same...

Cool Photos JJ. You had such exposure to the World at that Age. Must have been Fun. Did you find Tintin's Cigars of the Pharaoh during your expedition ? ;0)

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away

If you took all the girls I knew when I was single
And brought them all together for one night
I know they'd never match my sweet imagination
Everything looks worse in black and white

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Leave your boy so far from home
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Uhm uhm!
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
O.K.!

cheh doraan e khoobi bood...javaani kojaayi?! I envy you all these photos. My parents were not much into keeping memories. The only trip photos that I have, were either taken by street photographers or my expert photographer uncle who had his own family to go on trips with :o)

Why do some people immediately think that as soon as we get nostalgic about our past, that has to be a political statement on its own?? Believe me, people raised in any system still miss their childhood, when family members were together and part of a unit, especially if parents were well-bonded and encouraged such unity ....

Dear JJ
Thanks for sharing these photos. It reminded me of my own family trip to Europe. I only wished knew where the photos were. Lost in the nook and cranny of our migration history. Seeing your photos was like somewhat looking at mine.

Mustafa Jan, you speak with such authority :o)))

I am living in Mexico with my younger sister, the chubby little one who is now a fitness freak and nutritionist.

The American looking one lives in New York. I shall crash her place, too!

JJ what town/city are you from? I also am from south very close to persian gulf. Let me know, we might be cousins or something.

Thank you JJ jan

by Souri on

That was also my guess, but I wanted to be sure. I never heard about your other sister (the American look).......Your parents seem to be a happy couple, but I don't see that much happiness in the face of the children (fzoul,  I am) especially the two elder sisters. They rarely had a smile ........

Family

by Jahanshah Javid on

Souri Jan, the older lady looking like an Indian is my mother. She designed her own "mahalli" dresses and at the time she was into hinduism. Her mother was American, so the siblings carry both genes.

Thanks for sharing those beautiful memories with us. I love to see family pictures. And yes, you were all very cute children

One question (or two :O))

You said you were with your parents and your 3 sisters? Did I read it well? So I see two beautiful young girls who look like yourself and another older one who is very typically American. Is she your mom? or one of your sisters? She has red hair and doesn't look like the rest of the family! If she is your sister, then which one is your mom?

Who is that lady who look like an Indian lady? Is she also a family member?

Thanks for more explanation.

Cheers,

Slides

by Jahanshah Javid on

Thanks Faryar. Yes, these are from slides. Except for some of the dark ones, I did not mess with the colors. If you have lots of slides, you should give them to one of many companies that scan in bulk. I'm sure there are some in New York. It's worth the investment.

Great Pics..

by faryarm on

JJ

How wonderful it must be for you to have these images of your mother and father and sisters...

Question:

Were these slides? did you scan and colour correct them?

I also have thousands of slides and negs going back to the 1940s...

I havent summoned the courage to scan them yet...it takes alot of emotional energy to go through Pictures of loved ones who are no longer with us..

Thanks for sharing
