I have read all your comments on what to do about abuses in the comments section. I really appreciate your input and ideas. You have helped a lot in trying to come to a decision.
I do believe that all forms of expression are valid. I do believe free speech is sacred. But I am having a hell of time trying to put this theory into practice on this site. Personal attacks, threats, and cursing have worn me and many others down.
What site on this planet allows EVERYTHING to be published? If Google, Yahoo, online papers and blogs all monitor and moderate comments, why should iranian.com leave the door open for abusers? Is Wikipedia imposing censorship for letting in only registered users?
If you have the urge to say something and are willing to share it with the public in an open and responsible way, you are welcome to do so as a registered user.
I will talk with my colleagues on how to implement this in the best way possible to ensure a healthier, more constructive environment for readers and writers without losing the right to honest discussion and criticism.

I will never post cooking recipies
by Lalé Shahparaki Welsh on Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:12 AM PSTI will also never make a post without registering, and I will never be intimidated by those who make passive aggressive attacks under false names, racist or sexist comments, and I will never stop speaking my mind with respect to all who earn it. Jahanshah, have a happy birthday and I am delighted by the news that you will tighten up your ship. It’s time.

No one said making "Ghormehsabzi" is bad!
On the other hand is so good and delicious.
The issue is with housewives writting editorials on NYTIMES on how to make "Ghormehsabzi" and then insisting others who have more importantthings to say to follow their lead and post their Driver licences!
So before your feminist blood gets the best of you cool off and have some Ghormeh sabzi!!
Did you say something about "fortune something" company?? Do you even know what the F*** are you talking about?
Hypocrisy not Hypocracy

Suggestion to JJ
by Anonymously (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:06 AM PSTFirst, all this talk about Ghormeh Sabzi has made me quite hungry!!
Second, perhaps it's actually not a bad idea to set up a page for recipes. People (men and women) can post their recipes for their favorite dishes. I know that I can benefit from it...
Just a suggestion!
Happy Birthday Dear JJ

Thanks for making the point for change
by Old ugly fat Housewife who stinks (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:04 AM PSTTo all those who have yet again demonstrated the need for a change in policy on this site, thank you! Even on this thread, the allegedly intellectually superior chickens eventually resort to calling the people they don't agree with bored, ugly, dumb housewives etc. Yes, when logic and intelligence are lacking, the best strategy is to make fun of someone's looks/age/lifestyle. And if it is a woman, aye carrumba, you hit the jackpot! It is so easy to crush them: After all, there is no bigger insult than to be a woman who has spent her lifetime raising children and is no longer a spring chicken (pardon the pun), is there? My, my, true wisdom as displayed by our hate-mongering free speech warriors. I can't wait for you all to go to the next level, perhaps making fun of the odor of their genitalia, or even better, why don't we start making fun of suicidal people? Oh wait, that has already been done on this website. What's left? Making fun of children afflicted with Down Syndrome? I can't wait. Limitless free speech, that's what we need more of here, so as to not stifle your seemingly endless creativity.

Don't worry 9999 & nadia,
by Anonymousnomore (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:00 AM PSTDon't worry 9999 & nadia,
there is a handful of sexist jerks on this site that will make references to your being a housewife, cooking ghormeh sabzi and abgoosht, just because you are a woman. I have seen it many times. It is jerks like this that have nothing to say, who make all Iraians look bad, and they must be stopped. At least making them register will put some checks and balances in place for us tagging them. Then when they repeat their offenses too often we can demand that their email addresses or better yet their IP adresses are revealed publicly to counter the abuse.
It will stop with JJ's new deicision. It will slow down and then stay minimal (like other sites). It may take a few weeks but it will be better.
And by the way, I have an ID on here too, but if I posted this comment under that, the bullies would call me a "housewife" even though I run my own division of a fortune 100 company.
:) Happy birthday JJ!
"ghormeh sabzi" Recipe !
by Get real! (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:56 AM PSTTo Naidas:
I am not sure why my post invoked your response as you were not my intended audience unless your are posting recipe for "Fesnjoon".
I am saying if all some folks do is to talk about "Ghormeh sabzi" obviously they are not going have to problem with identification and even posting their own pictures!!
If you want to say anyting menaingful you are going to piss off one group or another!!
Asking to identify yourself is same as shutting down the exchange!

by Nadias on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:47 AM PSTI actually had a real picture of me as my avatar for several months. I got tired of the sexist language used towards me because of the way I look.
I was dressed conservatively too. So, you cannot say that I was displaying certain parts of my body and still I had to endure some atrocious language and behavior.
Since, I replaced the picture of me with the nice picture of a French village, things have improved greatly.:o)

LADAN K YOU ARE SO BRAVE!
by Anonymousfornow (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:34 AM PSTWow you are so brave. I wanted to respond to your childish and immature comments but as I hear and see, you have a reputation in this site. It's nice to live such a sheltered life and being so much in love with yourself. Thus,I am not even going to bother with you. So nice shopping at costco!
How does registration helps?
by Iva (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:32 AM PSTI guess I am not a savvy internet user, how would registration on this web site help with monitoring? Will JJ ban those login account who use "B-adabi" words? allowing the same person to register under another psudoname and continue?! By the way, who will be judge ... will JJ be the judge and executioner at the same time?!
I might be wrong, however, I think registeration will take away the spountanously of responses from many many readers who do not want to go through registration just to say, "I like that idea" or "Those are fantasitc pictures"!
Is it YouTube who allows user group to flag comments and/or video clips as inappropriate, allowing the staff to follow up and if the claim is correct then remove the piece from their website?! Will that work here?!
Daily Kos..?

Come on fellas!!!
Well done JJ You might
by alimostofi on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:31 AM PSTWell done JJ
You might want to have a live virtual chatroom as well to catch all the scary flies who do not want to register. As it does not store anything, it will be fine.
Please give us the tool to ignore people or remove comments on our own Blogs. It is only fair. Blogger allows it, so should you.

I must say us Chickens
by Anonymous9999 (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:18 AM PSTI must say us Chickens are losing this argument. Especially Anonymously. Sorry, you are!
Btw, I do have a real ID and will use it again now that it will be somewhat safer. Probably after the first few weeks after the change.
Cool. New rules.
Some suggestions...
by Leila Radan on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:15 AM PSTYou are absolutely right and I cannot imagine how frustrating things must be on your end of things. Some suggestions that come to mind, because readers are right in saying that registration in and of itself will not necessarily solve the problem (people at SF Gate, for example, need to register and they still get away with quite a bit of hate mongering), are to perhaps sign up in other sites, blogs and whatnot and see what their "behind-the-scenes" for writers look like.
At The Daily Kos and The Huffington Post, amongst many others, the writers have access to all the comments left on their articles to edit or delete them as they see fit and, for the most part, it has worked well. There are always ground rules and, personally, I have had no problem leaving opposing viewpoints up but have freely deleted the hate-filled messages that have no other aim in mind than to spew out curses or attacks on my person... even YouTube allows for such features with regards to comments left on videos.
A feature to flag certain repeat offenders might also serve well in weeding out those that are here to wreak havoc and nothing else.
I applaud in wishing to implement some change and look forward to seeing what they will be. Until then, good luck to you all in getting there!
Then post your pictures too...
by Get real! (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:14 AM PSTMost of the people who insist on registration and even more absurd notion of giving credit cards perhaps have nothing important to say other than
"sky is blue and flowers are beautiful"!
It is not an act of courage but sheer stupidity to identify yourself to your enemies that for whatever fucked up reason have the powwr you aint got!
Now if you are a poor blogger that is on borrowed time and never leaves home and no one gives a damn about them you may not have problem even posting your 86 years old picture.
I think registration alone is not enough to fend off nasty comments. What is going to happen the amature haters are going to disappear but the hard core ones are going to stick around with vengence.
Those who are asking for more restriction should have moved to Iraq when saddam was rulling!
Rememebr if you are a married in your 50s with children no one really cares what you have to say. So I guess youcan even put your birth certificate out there!!!
It's the young and uncommitted and rebelious who is at risk!!!
No it's all about you: ALL COWARDS
by ladan K on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:12 AM PSTAKA Chickens. Just caught this before I took off and had to respond. It's not about me. It's about your type.
You're making this about me, not me. As usual the chickens always want to derail and abuse when logic fails them. It is not defmatory to refer to the bully pulpit (used correctly again) as cowardly. It is an attack on an ideology, a dogma.
It is defamatroy only when you attack Some one with a name, a reputation; like Trita Parsi, Jahanshah Javid, or even me because I use my real name and email address.
But if you choose to refer to me as "your highness" because I am kicking your ass in this argument, you may!
Siging off for today. LK.
Anonymously Please stop
by n.zanincanadai1 (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:10 AM PSTAnonymously
Please stop arguing with her man nafasam dareh in var migireh to ro khoda.
You see, a "personal attack" is very vague. As you are experiencing, if it comes in wholesale (inclucing lots of people in the attack), it's acceptable. So if someone says "everyone who doesn't register with their real name is a coward" or if the say "anyone who swears is underserving of freedom of speech" or other whole sale attacks, it is tolerated. Even praised by those claiming to be the most liberal of all...It happens all the time here.
But if someone writes "Anonymously you suck", these people have a heart attack.
There is no understanding of proportionality. Those who want identification of some sort, it has been my experience, are the first to lump people in a group and be judgemental and call them names.
So don't bother, save your breath for when it is worth it.
Nevermind that Ladan K., Mostafa Z., Gholam Reza X. could all be fake names with a stolen picture. BUT HEY I'm just a coward like Anonymously, what do I know.
If the issue is with personal attacks, JJ needs to break it down to what constitues a personal attack.
Ino velesh kon be jaee nemiresee...GHORBUNET
Dearest Laden K
by Anonymously (not verified) on Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:02 AM PSTSo, it's all about YOU:
"if you're going to knock someone specifically, even me.."
Yes, even YOU, your highness! It may come as a shock to you, but YOU may also be worng!!!!
The correct terminology is NOT "bully pulpit", but rather just bully. "Bully pulpit" is the forum that a bully uses to intimidate others. That's where [sic] comes in.
Also, ALL insults and negative comments can be described as "descriptive adjectives", i.e., idiot, moron, uninformed, ugly...and the list goes on. So, that's really not a good excuse for your unabahsed name calling.
Next, threatening slander and libels cases is usually the last refuge of bullies who cannot stand opposing points of view (just watch FoxNews a little bit and you'll see).
Lastly, let me count the accusations and name calling in this latest rant of yours (although, of course, they cannot be considered defamatory, degrading, insulting, or otherwise inappropriate beacause they come from YOU. Also, they are not insults, but rather "descriptive adjectives", again, because they are uttered by YOU!):
1. coward,
2. loos
3. feeble argument (referring to comments)
4. "gut less [sic] cowards"
5. Can't understand proper English (referring to the article)
6. bully
Than you for the productive comments which are one hundred percent devoid of personal attacks!!!! Keep up the good work.

by Azarin Sadegh on Mon Mar 03, 2008 09:55 AM PSTThank you JJ!
You made the right choice and please don't feel bad about it.
That bad aftertaste in your mouth has nothing to do with chickens all gone. I hope not. But it might be coming from today's date and the real significance of whatever you have accomplished by now or you haven't or the amount of “stuff” you would love to achieve and still you have no clue on how you are supposed to start them...or in one word, the midlife crisis for a real humanist type :-)
Happy B-day and farewell to all of you anonymous chickens!

Everything has a limit !!!!!
by amirkabear4u on Mon Mar 03, 2008 09:45 AM PSTGenerally speaking democracy and freedom are very much misunderstood. Newspapers do not just print anything so why should everything be printed on a web site? Who gave you this idea? Does this mean newspapers are less democratic than your site?
The majority of comments are racial which are directly pointed at iranian muslems or middle easterners. Strangely people who claim freedom use this approach more than others. Are they abusing freedom?!
My advice to admin of iranian.com is some nations can not handle too much of good things, so freedom of expression should not be just unleashed on us. Anyway even those who claim to be democratic tend to follow some sort of guide lines or procedures. The only procedures this site following are verbal abuse.
