Thank you everybody for participating in the developing news blogs I have been posting. Our community showed its keen interest in news from Iran and in getting together to share and to talk about events unfolding there.
These are significant times in Iran's history. Iran is in the throes of important events, shaping almost every minute. A large body of the news coming out of Iran is "unofficial," as local reporters are under severe censorship pressure and foreign media are not allowed to cover developing events in Iran. The media are the bloggers and the tweeters, the YouTube posters, and undercover journalists of Iran. So much of what we hear is in Persian without the possibility of getting translated and presented in English. In this vein, it would help our community if everybody shares whatever they find in a central spot. This could also serve as a place for us all to come together and talk about the news, sharing our thoughts.
Please post your selected news and links and clips in this blog. Let's keep the community informed. Thank you again for all your help.

Amazing footage of protesters fighting with anti-riot policeWe came across this video here thanks to a reader (AM) and it’s amazing. You got to watch it, if you haven’t seen it already. Its quality is better than the typical jerky cell phone videos. This video shows the prelude to the Ashura pics here of the anti-riot police under attack which we had previously posted and the related videos here and here. We hope Iran’s security forces see these videos and pictures and realize the regime’s collapse is inevitable. They need to see the writing on the wall, stop their violence and switch sides. The Iranian people can’t be stopped!

Demonstrations in
by vildemose on Thu Dec 31, 2009 06:20 PM PSTKarim Sadjadpour CNN, December 30, 2009
KARIM SADJADPOUR, MIDDLE EAST EXPERT: Well, Tony, when I was based in Tehran, I used to attend these government-sponsored protests frequently. And when you talked to the demonstrators, they were often, as Rosemary mentioned, bused in from the provinces, given the day off of work, given a free lunch. So you compare that to the anti- government protesters who are warned weeks in advance that there are going to be severe repercussions if they attend these protests, and still hundreds of thousands turn out.
So, I am very confident, Tony, having been based in Tehran a couple of years, that a majority, if not a vast majority, of people in Iran want to see a different type of government in Tehran.
SADJADPOUR: Certainly, Tony, no country, no population on earth is monolithic. There’s a diversity of views. But let’s put things in perspective.
The Iranian population is overwhelmingly young, two-thirds under 33. Under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s tenure, the Iranian economy has severely deteriorated, social freedoms have severely been curtailed, political freedoms have severely been curtailed.

Shifteh AnsariThu Dec 31, 2009 05:29 PM PST
//www.rfi.fr/actufa/articles/120/article_1019...

Chinese armored anti-Riot trucks arrive Bandar Abbas
by Hovakhshatare on Thu Dec 31, 2009 05:00 PM PSTزره پوشهای وارداتی مدل DES-516B و ساخت صنایع نظامی استان دالیان چین می باشد.

Fax: +86-411-8681-3763
Email: eagle@eagle-sky.net

Thanks for your suggestion. I copy/paste news titles as they are in order to report them. I make very few editorial changes to what I post. Many people call those murdered during the recent events martyrs and news and blog titles address them as such.
I do see your sensitivity with the jargon used by IRI and I respect it. Hero, Ghahreman and Delaavar are all apt and deserving words for describing the young men and women who have given their lives for Iran. As for martyr, the meaning of the word in the dictionry is: "a person who sacrifices something of great value and especially life itself for the sake of principle." Would this not qualify the unarmed and brave young people of Iran who have jeopardized their life and limb for speaking their minds?
Happy New Year Mr. Fateh. I hope 2010 is a year of peace for the world and particularly for Iran.
PLEASE STOP USING MARTYR (SHAHEED)
by Faramarz_Fateh on Thu Dec 31, 2009 03:24 PM PSTPlease leave the words like Shaheed for the Islamic SOBs of IRI.

by HollyUSA on Thu Dec 31, 2009 02:15 PM PST"I believe this is an area where Middle East immigrants to the west can help their homelands and the world."
I couldn't agree more. Sadly though one of our biggest challenges as a nation and/or immigrant group has been our inability to unite for a common goal and set aside, even temporarily, our differences in order to push forward our own community's agenda and interests. And this is more a real problem it seems, amongst those of us who are the 'majority' of Iranians. Our minority groups seem to be a lot better at uniting.
Sad and I'm sure a lot more complex than something that can be cured anytime soon. But I'm hopeful nonetheless and do/will do my part at least.
Noam Chomsky
by Shifteh Ansari on Thu Dec 31, 2009 01:57 PM PSTTo his credit, he did join the July hunger strike in New York, on invitation from Akbar Ganji, and in support of Iranian protesters. I haven't heard much from him since then.
Holly, the old "expert" guard is changing quickly in the world. Some of the old timers will have to fade and they will have to be replaced with new, younger, and more worldly voices.
It has become increasingly clear how naive and uninformed US media anlysts and policy makers have been about Iran. As they scramble to catch up, I hope a new generation of good analysts and thinkers will emerge.
Think about it, what if the reason there is no way out of the stalemate of conflicts in the Midle East is because new voices are kept out of the thinking circles and the same old "doctors" keep dispensing the same old, tired, and ineffective prescriptions for a way out?
I believe this is an area where Middle East immigrants to the west can help their homelands and the world.
AN's appeal
by HollyUSA on Thu Dec 31, 2009 01:47 PM PSTHis only source of appeal is his stance against Israel and imperialism and the west's despicable foreign policy moves especially in the mid east. He knows that full well and leverages it to the fullest extent knowing it appeals to and successfully manipulates the realistically ignorant 'western left' as well as many Iranians and other middle easterners. But this is not news! Sorry to digress.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu Dec 31, 2009 01:34 PM PSTI agree that anyone who supports murderous dictators is A.P.O.S. In the paxt I have been very critical of both right and left. You are right though for some reason Ahmadinejad really appeals to the Western left. I met an American woman months ago who told me how she liked to hear Ahmadinejad talk. She assumed that since I was Iranian I would be an AN supporter. She was shocked to hear how so many of us including me hate AN. The Western left has a guilt complex and cannot understand how we think.
They have these grand Utopian ideas which they are unwilling to try themselves. So they first put their hopes in the Soviet Union; that collapsed. Next they look to Islam to bring their Utopia; that is failing. I wonder what the hard left will do now?
Holly Jan
by Shifteh Ansari on Thu Dec 31, 2009 01:20 PM PSTI guess there is human rights and then there is human rights! What has been happening to people of Iran is not some vague report from a village somewhere which might take days and months to reach the mainstream media; it is real, live coverage of murders in broad daylight. How long would it take anyone with a modicum of decency, let alone a Nobel Peace Laureate to watch those video clips and to state a position? It is really disheartening.
In Mehdi Karroubi's words "Nanjoon e bandeh ham fahmeed," and we are still waiting to hear from some of these world figures.
