In Iran, Debate Over an Article of Faith

President Ahmadinejad, who came to office in 2005 declaring his intention to “hasten the emergence” of Imam Mahdi, said in a speech broadcast nationally this month that Imam Mahdi supported the day-to-day workings of his government and was helping him in the face of international pressure.

That was too much for senior clerics, who contend they alone are qualified to speak on the topic.

What a dichotomy!

At one instance you would think that Ahmadinejad is not supported or like minded like the clerics and potentially more moderate; in another instance the clerics come out trying push religion out of politics.

No wonder people are confused about Iran's political system and all of these figures. No one knows what Iran is all about. But then maybe it is this confusion that has helped astray any moves by foreign powers against Iran.
