Late last month, Mr. Batebi safely arrived in the United States after serving nine years of his sentence. He spoke to The Economist this week about his years in Evin prison, where he suffered through harsh conditions. He told the magazine of a two-year stint in solitary confinement and a partial stroke. He was also tortured repeatedly: "During his interrogation he was blindfolded and beaten with cables until he passed out. His captors rubbed salt into his wounds to wake him up, so they could torture him more. They held his head in a drain full of sewage until he inhaled it. He recalls yearning for a swift death to end the pain."

To: AAJ SR (Batebi; a questionable character ?)
by ./. (not verified) on Sat Jul 12, 2008 08:39 PM PDTaaj,
As some have already said on this thread, Batebi is a questionable character very similar to Abbas Fakhravar, Akbar Atri, Mehdi Khalaji, and the like. They make some trouble in iranian universities, get in jail for a while and then with an "honorary" green card or US passport enter the US with a guarantted future! No better than many other sold-outs. If they were true fighters (of any cause), they would stay in Iran and fight. What better proof for their legitimate role than their prison terms?
To mammad; What do you know?
by aaj sr (not verified) on Sat Jul 12, 2008 06:42 PM PDTI have not heard about these people except Fakharavar. Who are these people, what have they done and what should they have done or do?
Let's hope
by Mammad on Sat Jul 12, 2008 06:25 PM PDTIt is, of course, good that he is free. But,
let's hope that he will not be the second coming of such sold-outs as Abbas Fakhravar, Akbar Atri, Mehdi Khalaji, and people like them, who do anything to make a living.

To Shiny Head: Talk is cheap, bring on the facts..
by aaj sr (not verified) on Sat Jul 12, 2008 05:34 PM PDT-If he was a spy, knowing IRI system , he would have been their headlines since 9 years ago, and most probably he would have been executed long time ago.
-I saw his interview with VOA too, that's how I learnt that he flew from Austria.
-Still I am waiting for proof that he was flown away with Chaney's private plane!!!.
After all he was in jails with many other people, by now we should have heard something from some one that he is not a legit person. Remember now adays , nothing stay secret anymore, (so many IRI agents are all over, wink wink!).
My friend, talk is cheap. "Not guilty unless proven otherwise"
PS: I do not know Batebi and my knowledge about him is the same as yours. But I have the decency to not accuse him for something that I do not know or I cannot prove.
Gee, I care about this Iranian man.
by K Nassery on Sat Jul 12, 2008 05:32 PM PDTSo many people here were upset about Abu Graib and Guantanamo yet you don't have compassion for one of your own? It seems odd to me. No one should be tortured .....ever.

by Shiny Head on Sat Jul 12, 2008 04:32 PM PDTAaj,
I also say, who care about this batebi man.
You say:
>>> ".... he says he is an average, normal person, he is not political person ...." <<<
I say:
Nomral person is not taken to jail in Iran, and for 9 YEARS. Obviously he is trying to hide behind these mozakhrafat, like "human rights"... Mullahs are terrible, but they have proven to be GOOD at catching forgein spies.
You say:
>>>" Now, you say he was brought to US by Dick Chaney's private plane? do you have any proof of this?
(by the way, he says and he can proof, he was in Austria when he left to USA, do you know better, if he came from Turkey?)<<<
I say:
I have also seen his interview on VoA (of all places!) in whcih he said he fled to Iraq's Kurdestan from Iran's Kurdestan, and in Turkey went to the US embassey. I do not know about his plane ride thou. The interview was just a few weeks ago. You may be able to find it on the VoA web page.
regards.
To : Malekeh, Do you have any proof...?
by aaj sr (not verified) on Sat Jul 12, 2008 02:49 PM PDTBatebi says in his interview that he is not "freedom fighter" as you mentioned, he says he is an average, normal person, he is not political person and he defends human rights.
Now, you say he was brought to US by Dick Chaney's private plane? do you have any proof of this?
(by the way, he says and he can proof, he was in Austria when he left to USA, do you know better, if he came from Turkey?)
Let's say, an American dissident who was in same condition as Batebi, who was in US jail for 9 years, and he wants to runaway and hides in Iran, what government of Iran will, should do?
Now, honestly, what's wrong with us Iranian, why do we have to "lajan mall" everything, without any proof and consideration of others misery? or is this the human's nature to be jealouse or whatever...
who cares ?
by Malekeh_ on Sat Jul 12, 2008 01:13 PM PDTHe fled iran after he was jailed in Iran, and was brought to US via Turkey with Dick Chaney's private plane. You really think he is a "freedom fighter" for Iran? Give me a break!
true hero
