Unfortunately, with the current economical downturn I sense a rise in right wing support across Western Europe. People are scared for their jobs and the first place they look is at the immigrant community.
The world somehow feels more polarized.
The Dutch have a different philosophy towards free speech. Their politics is driven by two opposite poles with very little middle ground.
Irrespective of Wilder's views on Islam the Dutch public are propably still pretty angry because of the murder of the film maker Theo van Gogh and telling them to curb their free speach is not going to make things better.
