Security and police forces violently attacked Iranian workers as they gathered in Laleh Park in Tehran to observe International Workers’ Day on May 1st, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported. The demonstration had been called by ten independent labor organizations. According to information received by the Campaign more than 100 persons were arrested, and citizens not participating in the attempted May Day observance were among those beaten. “These brutal and deplorable attacks are emblematic of the Iranian government’s utter contempt for workers and for the state’s international obligations to protect worker’s rights,” stated Hadi Ghaemi, spokesperson for the Campaign.
>>>Hundreds of IRI security guards descended upon the peaceful protestors and brutally beat them, dragging them away. Among those arrested were members of the One Million Signatures Campaign who were among the protestors to show their solidarity with Iranian labor activists.

Oh no,, there's no such thing as interrupting in c-space,
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Sun May 03, 2009 05:55 PM PDTthat's silly.
The publication is online and like anything else you can google it. I came across it in my travels, my websearching, when I was investigatng the at that time VERY unknown issue of the labor purges. Back in Febvruary. In fact believe it oor not I pieced it together when neither Payvand nor RFE could, while having the handicap of not reading Persian btw. This pblication was really the only English language Iranian human rights publication I came across that gave a reasonable coverage and understanding of the workers movement at that time. ll coverage at least then waspiecemeal, theinternational unnion ones, the Iranina-specific labor ones, both within and without Iran..this one at least offerred some good pieces.
However I must say that with this massive onslaught of labor, things may change, they may bei in the forefrotn of the news now. Or not. Who knows? I believe that unfortunately many expts just don't care that much about labor..or aat least don't htink about it enough to realize they do caare.
Thake care.
Where does this newspaper gets its funanding? Anyone knows?
by gol-dust on Sun May 03, 2009 05:05 PM PDTSorry, Rosie, Perham, and DK for interruption.
Just wondering, since i had never seen it. Do you know where it is based? Thanks!
Parham, you understand everything about Delara, some
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Sun May 03, 2009 11:24 AM PDTthings FAR better than mostpeople here, that is, about Delara AS Delara. I do not believe you understand how Delara DIRECFTLY relates to all the other issues of persecution you bring up in such a crucial way, being she embodies them. I would ask you once again to read that long post on the Delara thread I wrote to you about this that you said you didn't understand. And also to read the blog I wrote about her two days ago, link I just provided on the other thread.
By the way, this thread happens to be extremely well-commented for a feed, although only by three people (now four, including you), they are three dedicated people who've follwed this issue on the feed bery carefully. And there's a discussion going on, not just arbitrary little smatterings of comments.

by Parham on Sun May 03, 2009 05:49 AM PDTThis is not a thread about Delara (or me). So why insist on turning it into one now? Hmmm?
And btw, look at the number of posts in support HERE, about this subject. Compare it to Delara's.
See what I mean?
More, don't ever say I don't understand Delara. I just have a different point of view than you do on the subject.
I think I've proved my point enough already, don't you?
You don't, count the number of posts here again!

by Darius Kadivar on Sun May 03, 2009 05:07 AM PDTYour welcome, yes Khatami's speach was very enlightening on many aspects. He was not entirely wrong nor entirely right. But in my opinion it also shows the limits of his influence to date particularly in terms of reforming the regime. Maybe he will change for the better. Only time will say as well as the results of the future elections ...
Darius, I did watch the Khatami video and..

Oh my God, David, the movie..the horror movie...
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Sun May 03, 2009 03:22 AM PDTDelara...they knew the other human rights activist organizations had joined the workers, and they knew Delara was the "star" of the horror movie..and every year they have the May Day labor purge..so..they planned a really huge one this time..and then..
they hanged her on May Day.
On May Day.

They want to intimidate people
by Darius Kadivar on Sun May 03, 2009 02:46 AM PDTPeople must not give in to these thugs. The more people mention these arrests and the more the international community will be alerted. Unfortunately it is a bitter pill to swallow for those back home but we should continue mentioning these abuses and violations of Human Rights everytime they occur without fearing that the regime will get tougher. We know what they are capable of and it has lasted for 30 years because we remained Silent either by solidarity during the Iran Iraq war when kids of age 9 were sent to the War Front with a plastic key and we refused to say anything on grounds that they were defending their country. Or when the Massacres of 1988 happened and the international community only realized the impace many many years later.
SILENCE IS THE ONLY COLLABORATOR OF SUCH HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES !
Oh David, thank you so much for the poem. Now..
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Sun May 03, 2009 01:23 AM PDTYou know, I'll tell you the truth, I was so exhausted dealingwith the insanity on the Delara Iranian of the Day thread that I really didn't grasp the dimensions of this. Imagine, "Long live the labor movement", and the seriousnesss of the police retaliantion.. This really IS a powder keg. So many thoughts I', having now...
First of all the insanity on the Delara thread was caused by Parham. He was the "minority opinion's" main spokesman. And he was not welcomed and he was nnot polite either and so things mushroomed. But the fact of the matter is that I knew it was necessary to keep him somehow involved in the Delara case, because his argument was that people are fixating on her (for obvious reasons), that it'll be the same ol' same ol' flash in the pan and then back to the capuccionos, and he was arguing about things like, what about Osanloo being tortured, and what about all the others on death row..and...so hostile,so bitter....and not really understanding Delara but understanding the big picture so well..
and frankly, I don't know if it was quite the right TIME for all this (well David, you were there for part of it..) but it had to be seized somehow, I felt. And I just don't think too many people here grasp what's going on, the size of it, and also that these kinds of situations of extreme repression can lead to many different scenarios, and one of them is full-scale uprising. I guess we won't know the outcomes until after the elections but if this continues...
For me Delara as you know is two things. She's Delara and she's a symbol and spokesperson for the entire people of Iran, because they're all imprisoned. But how to use this grim opportunity..so that expatria doesn't just...go back to Seinfeld and capuccinos. Which is Parham's point. Yet at the same time to get the Parhams of the world to stop being so damn bitter and alienate everyone..
Also I'm providing the link to my labor blog because it contains the links to a couple of the labor groups they mention in this article. But anyone who wants to use it should check on the thread for corrected links..there were mistakes.

lack of words
by David ET on Sun May 03, 2009 12:12 AM PDTNot even shaking head
just lack of words
speechless does not explain it
and is beyond disgust
or even vomit!
wolves are everywhere
dressed differently
...ripping our hearts
dressed differently
Licking the wounds of the battle
and washing the blood of my brother off my face
and burying the blue body of my sister
in a corner
observing the deceit
of those who have come to picnic:
choosing between rare, well done
or suffocated...
NO!
this is beyond reasoning:
blood that keeps them red
is ours
the air that they breathe
is from our longs
to the last breathe
filling up the vans
the dungeons
and the graveyards
Let the martyrs go
in peace
not even that they may
it is years past reasoning
lines are drawn
time is now
and this is all the time one gets
to pause
to reflect
right to express
right to assemble
right to justice
right to peace
right to ... Love
determined and strong
WE SHALL OVERCOME
They do it every May Day. It's a ritual.
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Sun May 03, 2009 12:57 AM PDTThey start off by flogging last year's May Day activists and arresting other labor leaders in the months preceding May Day to terrorize people into nto attending the rallies. They do anyway, and then they aree arragined, let out pon bail, and then they are tried and punished in the months preceding May Day. And so the world spins.
The difference is that previously as I understand til now it's been mostly in Kurdestan/Kuzestan, Iand believe that now that the full-fledges human rights purge (as you pointed out, since Obama, and also in anticipation of the coming elections (ao, my guess is that they're "expanding" and the resistance is expanding too.
IThois one is of massive dimensions.t's a powder keg. it's a powder keg.
Labor is finally exploding in a way that the pseudo-Leftists in expatria will no longer be able to pretend they don't exist. When it happens in Senendaj or Shoosh, it's quieter..when it happens in Tehran it's..glaring. But obviously IRI wanted that too.
Anyone who attempts to apologize for this Regime now should be...repatriated. And guess what--they'd wind up in Evin in five days flat.
