...It's clear from countless discussions I've had in Tehran this week that many Iranians blame... Ahmadinejad for isolating Iran...and..want the next president...to make restoring Iran's relations with the United States a top priority... At least five separate, very influential Iranian officials ...have said that the key is for the United States to deal directly with Ali Khamenei....rather than worry about who is president.

confusing?

It continues to confuse me on the importance of an election at all. In one breath it's considered a major election and next, I'm hearing that it doesn't really matter who is President in that the supreme leader is the only one Obama should be worried about.

(Of course, were Ahmadinejad to be ousted on Friday, it would be infinitely easier for Obama to sell the idea of talking to Iran to a skeptical US public.)

This statement pretty much sums it up. At least from the US point of view. But isn't that still just a smoke screen? A facade of sorts? If the leader isn't willing to negotiate a truce of any kind with ahmadinejad as president, why would he with someone else?

"In Iran, the Iranian leadership--the president, the Leader, everyone--looks at Obama very positively,"

I really don't understand this statement at all either. When has the president OR the supreme leader ever expressed any positive views towards the US? The people, yes. The leaders and/or president, no.

Skeptical? Absolutely.
