Behind the Protests, Social Upheaval in Iran
New York Times / Hamid Dabahi, Shirin Neshat

The government crackdown in Iran is continuing, as hundreds of people, including moderates associated with the presidential candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi, have been detained. It was unclear how the millions of Iranians who had filled the streets to protest the election outcome would respond in the coming days, but the outpouring over the death of Neda Agha-Soltan has heightened the sense of social upheaval.

Hamid Dabashi, Shirin Neshat on recent events

by Asghar_Massombagi on

Four Iranian points of view on recent events.  I especially like Dabashi's description of the uprising as post-ideological. It coincides with my own reading.  The platform of this uprising is not radical.  The youth are after their basic civil rights, as Dabashi puts it. But perhaps seeking individual freedom is the most radical demand of all.

It's about time

by Asghar_Massombagi on

Thanks, Cosmopolitan Iran for the links.  It's about time the mainstream media included Dabashi's very articualte point of view on Iran.  One may agree or disagree with Dabashi, but you can't ignore his voice.  He's simply too important a public intellectual not to be included in public discourse on Iran.

Dabashi is the very Martin Luther King Jr. we are seeking...

by Cosmopolitan Iran (not verified) on

You are nothing but a petty little man Darius Kadivar—irrelevant and illiterate as usual! You and your ilk must feel extremely useless these days on the face of heroism inside Iran and the outstanding ability of Professor Hamid Dabashi to read and guide this movement...

Many of us truly believe that Professor Dabashi is the very Martin Luther King Jr. that our people need!

Mr. Kavidar, neither you or any of your pathetic and backward monarchist friends will ever write Op-eds in the New York Times, nor will people in Iran ever give a hoot about your crocodile tears (best performed by Reza mini-Pahlavi the other day--sickening to watch)...you people (incl. your SAVAK) are the disgrace of our nation together with the Basijis and Khamenei et al.

Long live Iran, its heroic people and Professor Dabashi who is our best moral voice in this world! Professor Dabashi is our contemporary Rumi, Khayyam, Sai’di...God bless him and our brave people!
