The Obama administration is talking with allies and Congress about the possibility of imposing an extreme economic sanction against Iran if it fails to respond to President Obama’s offer to negotiate on its nuclear program: cutting off the country’s imports of gasoline and other refined oil products.

The option of acting against companies around the world that supply Iran with 40 percent of its gasoline has been broached with European allies and Israel, officials from those countries said. Legislation that would give Mr. Obama that authority already has 71 sponsors in the Senate and similar legislation is expected to sail through the House.

In a visit to Israel last week, Mr. Obama’s national security adviser, James L. Jones, mentioned the prospect to Israeli officials, they said.

Will this help Khamenei and Mahmoud?

What if this gives them a chance to distract people from the elections and their murders?  DOSHMAN talk might resume, pushing everything else to the margin, making life even more miserable for people of Iran.

There will be negotiations...

by Ostaad on

heck I bet the negotiations are already happening while all attentions are diverted by the demonstrations, show trials, etc. \

The louti-va-antarash (Khamenie-Ahmadinejad) have painted themselves in a corner. They NEED to improve the economy and they cannot do it by providing more concession to the Chinese by "selling" them oil under undesirable and disadvantageous conditions. Moreover, both China and Russia have indicated they can only do so much for Iran, otherwise how come neither has announced they would provide Iran with refined products in case of a US/EU embargo?!!!

That said, ALL sanctions must be lifted because the sanctions are working against the interests of the Iranian working class, the very people who are standing up to the regime demanding restoration of their civil/human rights. The sanctions' only effect is to increase the Iranian people's dependence on government-provided jobs and markets.

The time to lift the sanctions for the sake of creating income and jobs for the Iranian people is RIGHT NOW!

Status quo helps the Islamists, any trade helps the Islamists. This very moment the Islamists are torturing and murdering Iranians, oil sanction is not enough, total sanction is needed to quicken the fall of the Islamist cutthroats republic.
