Tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear programme will be resolved only through diplomatic engagement, not isolation, of Tehran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

"We see no alternative to a political-diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear problem," Lavrov said in an address to students at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations on the eve of key Iran talks in Germany.

"The best means to apply outside pressure on Iran's decision-making process lie not in isolating Tehran or threats of resorting to force, but in involving it in an important international cooperation," he added.

"This is the only way to ensure stability and security in the region."

Russia will attend a meeting Wednesday near Frankfurt of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

Iran insists it has the right to develop nuclear technology, which it says is aimed at generating energy for its growing population.

Israel is the only country in the Middle Ease that actually has nuclear weapons.

Observers say due the strong Jewish and pro-Israel lobbies in the US and some European countries, these countries have taken a hypocritical stance in relation to nuclear issues in the region.
