Abdolfattah Soltani is a well-known Iranian human rights lawyer, and spokesman for the Defenders of Human Rights Center, which was founded by the Nobel Peace Prize-winner Shirin Ebadi.
He welcomes the change in policy: "These US funds are going to people who have very little to do with the real struggle for democracy in Iran and our civil society activists never received such funds. The end to this program will have no impact on our activities whatsoever."

Twisted liberal logic
by shaw on Tue Oct 27, 2009 06:23 AM PDTIt brought us the Islamic Republic thanks to Carter's back-room support of Khomeini and public appeals of tolerance and "wanting to see the good in these people we don't understand".
This is the same garbage reverse logic. Oh yeah, if we cut the funding, it will help the cause, just like if we use dialogue and friendship with hostage takers and hijackers, it will turn them into friends.
It makes sense if you think Santa Clause will bring you the resources!
Iranian pseudo-intellectualism continues to screw us further. It has got to stop. Innocent people are getting killed by invaders of our country! Pick up a stick, or better yet give the people the right to bear arms, and Iran will never be oppressed again.
Or you can wait to see how many innocent people Mr. Abdolfattah Soltani is able to save with is law degree as progressively decreasing moral and financial support for the anti-regime movement by Mr. Obama and world powers further emboldens the Islamic government and their delusion of legitimacy.

by IRANdokht on Tue Oct 20, 2009 10:56 PM PDTYou're right my friend. Mr Soltani's statement and Ganji's point of view are the important message of this article and I am sorry to have helped diverting the attention away from it. Sometimes when I read the same baseless accusations over and over again, I get wound up a little.
I am also for cutting these funds that have only backfired and put the lives of the real human rights activists in Iran in danger.
Thank you for your comment and chashm! :o)

Darling?
by ex programmer craig on Tue Oct 20, 2009 09:27 PM PDTOstaad, what would your friends in Iran think if they saw you referring to another man as "darling"? Even if the regime instituted some kind of "don't ask, don't tell" policy, you should be more careful!
Darius, why are you yelling, darling?
by Ostaad on Tue Oct 20, 2009 09:13 PM PDTI am sure as a "media consultant" you must be aware that posting items using all CAPS is not good netiquette!

by 1L on Tue Oct 20, 2009 07:40 PM PDTI am a 25 year law student in LA and have nothing to do with the IRI. I pay my annual membership dues to NIAC and recently paid $120 to attend their LA fundraiser which was filled with .... guess what.... normal Iranian Americans and not the "mullah appeasers" etc you keep calling us. I don't get how you keep calling NIAC some IRI sponsored group when it derives substantial support from Iranian Americans like myself who have no sympathy for the IRI. Stop the BS buddy

by benross on Tue Oct 20, 2009 04:33 PM PDTWell, on the other side of the coin, it is stupid to think there is no effort and no funding on the part of IRI to divert the political discourse outside of the country. The politic change of U.S government includes -I hope- to get to the source of those funding as well and cut them off. We certainly should try to stop it anyway.

Abdolfattah Soltani a true and tested human rights lawyers, who says these fundings hurt democracy promotion in Iran, DK comes up with irrelivant points (what on earth do they have to do with this news piece anyway?!?) to divert attention to the real issue.

by benross on Tue Oct 20, 2009 01:39 PM PDTGood news indeed. The problem was not the funding, but the misuse of it. We are better off without it if we can't make a good use of it.
