In a SPIEGEL interview, Iranian Ayatollah Mohsen Kadivar, currently a visiting research professor at America's Duke University, discusses the recent death of opposition leader Hossein Ali Montazeri, the frustrations Iranians have with their regime, the future of the green movement and the prospect of an escalation.

SPIEGEL: Ayatollah Kadivar, what did Hossein Ali Montazeri mean to you, and what role did he play for the Iranian people?Kadivar: He was my teacher, my spiritual guide, my father -- the most important person in my life. I studied as a young man under him when he was the Revolutionary Leader's deputy. I admired the way he fought along side Khomeini, but then also for his candid criticism of him. I cried when Khomeini repudiated him. For Iran, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri was a true beacon of light and, in the end, a spiritual leader for the green opposition.

You guys after 30 years still haven't realized that "hojjatuleslam" and "ayatullah" are just terms of respect, and are not RANKS.

The ranks are the following:

Talabeh - Student

Mujtahid - One who can interpret fiqh

Marja Taqlid - One who has mastered fiqh (law) and ijtihad (interpretation) to a point where others can direct their questions in matters of law to him.

Then the clergy are seperated into two sections:

Fuqaha - Those who interpret law

Urafa - One who are masters of spirituality

Very rarely are clergy of both categories.

But the rest of the titles are just titles of respect and MEAN NOTHING.

From some of your eccentricities I suspected that there were some akhond genes there!

A promotion?

by Shifteh Ansari on

Mohsen Kadivar got promoted t Ayatollah? When? Certainly he is a lot more educated and literate than most other clergy, but with all the animosity the Khamenei clan feel about him, I wonder who dared to support his promotion? This would have made big news if it were true. I think it is a mistranslation of his title from hojat-ol-eslam to ayatollah.
