"Twitter CEO Evan Williams says his company is working on technology to work around firewalls put up by repressive regimes such as Iran and China, the Financial Times reports.

The role of Twitter in the Iranian protest movement has received plenty of attention, but the country's government was able to block many Iranians from full access to the service.

Evan applauded Google's recent (belated) stand against Chinese censorship, but said direct negotiation with foreign governments wasn't practical for a smaller company like Twitter. Instead, he hopes to use technology to work around censorship efforts.
