Israel has criticized the Palestinian Authority (PA) for boycotting trade in goods made by Israelis living in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

"Israel is aiming for peace and economic prosperity," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quoted as saying by the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz on Monday.

Acting PA chief Mahmoud Abbas called for the boycott in late April to rid the Palestinian markets of the commodities. The PA also hoped to encourage the 27-member European Union to prohibit trade with enterprises based in the settlements.

Netanyahu also said "Israel aspires to economic peace… the Palestinians are opposing economic peace and are taking steps that in the end hurt themselves."

The Washington Post reported earlier in the month that at least 17 businesses in the Israeli settlement of Ma'aleh Adumim had closed down since the boycott began.

Israel's Manufacturers Association has required compensation for the losses it has suffered due to the ban, the Israeli daily said on Friday.

The PA has launched a House to House campaign, which involves enlisting 3,000 volunteers to dispense leaflets to the Palestinian residents of the West Bank, the Ma'an News Agency reported last Tuesday.

Tel Aviv continues to defy international calls for a halt to settlement construction in the West Bank, which was occupied by the Israelis in 1967.
