An Iranian woman faces death by stoning after being convicted of adultery.
Amnesty International yesterday called on the Iranian authorities to halt the imminent execution of mother-of-two Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and the hanging of another woman said to be a political activist.
Ashtiani was convicted of having an ‘illicit relationship’ with two men in May 2006 and received 99 lashes as her sentence.
Despite this, she has also been convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning.
The 43-year-old has retracted a ‘confession’ she said was made under duress.

by yolanda on Sun Jul 04, 2010 06:03 AM PDTHi! Rea,
It is good to keep this story in the news....thank you for the petition link.....I am sure it is better than doing nothing.......if this story can generate enough out-rage and publicity.....it will hurt IRI....IRI will notice it....and it may reduce the sentence.....
I recall IRI initially gave Mr. Valian death penalty for throwing 3 rocks during protest.....there was a lot of coverage for the severe punishment....IRI reduced the guy's sentence to 3 years in jail.....
thanks,
yolanda
by Rea on Sun Jul 04, 2010 04:14 AM PDTMy first reaction was: "it can't be true, probably anti-IRI propaganda." Then I checked a few sites, Amnesty Int'l among others. Hélas !
However, wonder if those petitions do anything. I sign them, donate, forward to everybody. But how helpfull they are, I really don't know.

by yolanda on Sat Jul 03, 2010 04:27 PM PDTHi! Mouse,
So participating in stoning is religious duty! OMG! I think that if a person participates, the participant will be scarred for life! I can't even picture myself at the crime scene!
If Mrs. Mohammadi is scheduled to be stoned....I hope she is able to free herself.
If IRI really wants to rehabilitate her image, IRI should stop the stoning!
Thank you for your post!

Where did lynching people came from at the turn of 20th century?
by Anonymouse on Sat Jul 03, 2010 09:24 AM PDTYolanda at the turn of 20th century in America when they lynched blacks, you can search for pictures of it on Yahoo or Google, the people who stood by and took pictures were generally ordinary local people although not everyone attended.
US Senator Byrd who died this week was a staunch KKK member and probably took part, I don't know for sure I'm just guessing.
So in Iran it is the same thing. They gather local people who are willing to participate and make an afternoon of it and they tell them it is their religious duty and halal. So they do it but not everyone attends. In the Soraya movie couple of people refused to participate.
These days they do it in hiding and not advertised like they did early on in the revolution. When they hang people you also see people standing around and gathering to watch.
Everything is sacred

by yolanda on Fri Jul 02, 2010 04:57 PM PDTI am just curious where IRI finds people who are willing to throw the stones........it is so cruel to cause slow death like stoning!
MM Khomeini "could" couldn't he? Was/is VF in Sharia?

by MM on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:34 AM PDT1. Since Stoning is in Shari'a, no one dare second-guess the law, although, there is a voluntary moratorium on stoning.
2. Let's hope that this is the last VF, and civil laws will replace Shari'a.
Hopefully the next "Supreme Leader" will ban it!

p.s.
by Rea on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:21 AM PDTMouse, will comment on Soraya once I've seen it.
1 man, 2 woman is dependent upon the "issue"!
by Anonymouse on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:20 AM PDTIn other cases such as inheritence woman is 1/8 a man, not 1/2. Sometimes 3 woman can also be allowed instead of 2 man, like in a death certificate. It's very intricate and all bull crap.
Everything is sacred
Well I hope it makes the news to force them to respond

Anonymouse - in Shari'a, a man is basically worth 2 women
by MM on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:17 AM PDTThat is why you see such prejudices in judgements on the type of punishment too. These prejudices will disappear when equality (gender, race and religion) is the rule of law in Iran.
Dear Mouse, couldn't agree more
by Rea on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:14 AM PDTHowever, I still hope this is not true. Dailymail.co.uk is known to be b/s.
At the same time, this is why I hate "religionists". They have always been against women. No matter their religious affiliation, turban or black robe, they are all the same.
Also notice how different men and women are stoned
by Anonymouse on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:08 AM PDTMen killed in this way are buried to the waist, while women are buried deeper, to stop the stones hitting their breasts.
If a prisoner manages to pull free during a stoning, he or she is acquitted or jailed, but is not executed. It is easier for a man to drag himself free because he is not buried so deeply.
In December 2008 a man convicted of adultery escaped death by stoning by dragging himself out of the pit he had been buried in for the punishment.
But two other alleged male adulterers were killed by the barbaric method in the same incident, which took place in the north-eastern city of Mashhad.
Everything is sacred
In IRI, Islamic law (Shari'a) takes precedent over any civil law
by MM on Fri Jul 02, 2010 08:03 AM PDTand as a matter of fact Shari'a is, in principle, the civil law. Therefore, although there is a voluntary moratorium on stoning in Iran, the law is still in the books and NO ONE dare overturn Shari'a. That is why, although less frequent now, you see more radical judges hand-in stoning as a punishment once in a while.
Only international pressure will highlight this barbaric punishment and force Khamenei to reduce the sentence. Please join in condemning this pre-historic punishment that has been abandoned by Jews and Christian but retained by Muslims.
Rea too much for any woman whatever her "crime"
