A missing Iranian scientist is on his way home today after sparking a diplomatic furore by seeking refuge at the Pakistani embassy in Washington.

Tehran had already accused the CIA of kidnapping Shahram Amiri in order to gain information about Iran's nuclear programme.

Yesterday it emerged that Mr Amiri backed up these claims after walking into the Iranian section of Pakistan's embassy.

'My kidnapping was a disgraceful act for America. I was under enormous psychological pressure and supervision of armed agents in the past 14 months,' Iranian TV quoted him as saying.

Today Iran has announced that Mr Amiri is on his way back to the country via a third country.

A spokesman did not name the country.
