UK and France agree to joint nuclear testing treaty

The UK and France are to sign treaties agreeing to military co-operation including testing of nuclear warheads.

One centre will be set up in the UK to develop nuclear testing technology and another in France to carry it out.

Prime Minister David Cameron and President Nicolas Sarkozy will also outline plans, at a London summit, for a joint army expeditionary force.

No 10 called the measures "practical", but Labour said they left "big questions" about the UK's defences.

Obama didn't have a stop enrichment pre-condition at first

by Anonymouse on

- Yes Bushehr's enriched uraniaum is provided by Russia and getting the spent fuel back.  Just recently Ahmadi said that they actually prefer this because of "economic" considerations that is cheaper this way.  The point is Bushehr is a fully operational nuclear power plant and Iran could have had other plants with less restrictions if they were serious.  Now they don't know what they want.

- Obama's "first" round of negotiations didn't include any pre-conditions for stopping enrichment.  It was without pre-conditions.  Both parties agreed to get the enriched uranium from France and Russia would get the spent fuel back.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  Whatever Khatami did is another story but here they're back to where they started.  Like the end of Iran-Iraq war when they took 3 years and ended up accepting the same UN resolution that was available 3 years earlier.

- NPT is an agreement to not "proliferate" nuclear technologies.  The countries who have it, already have it and testing them is part of having them, to keep them safe and functional. UK and France's agreement here doesn't violate the NPT.  They're "both" signatory.

- The sanctions now are the result of broken negotiations by Islamic Republic and there are actually evidence that shows they welcome these sanctions.  This is again like the Iran Iraq war when 2 mad men, Saddam and Khomeini, were hell bent on prolonging the war one way or another and didn't care about anyone.  Correct me if I'm wrong again but Obama's position is that the door to negotiations are open.

It isn't US that is being hurt by sanctions.  When you're faced with someone with a black belt in Karate you may "think" you're strong enough to beat him because you took some Karate classes. Worse if you dare the black belt to fight you!  Islamic Republic claims to be the power in the region, so they shouldn't be worried about any sanctions as they "claim".  They can't have it both ways although they always ask.

I think this whole discussion is old and I really don't have any interest in it anymore ;-) good luck!

Well anonymouse jaan,

by Bavafa on

This was an honest rhetoric much like we hear from the other side.

My intention is not to defend IRI  but Iran and Iran's right to nuclear power and a just and fair solution that is based on law and not force.

Having said that, couple of simple correction:

There is no enrichment in Bushehr plant, the uranium is provided by the Russians and the spent fuel gets returned to Russia.

The Obama's offer of negotiation without any precondition had the condition of stopping enrichments while negotiating. This is all along with push for sanction which they have put in affect.

When Iran voluntarily froze enrichment during Khatami's time as president, it resulted to nothing for Iran so it is hardly any surprise as why they would feel obliged to do so again.

As for "nuclear power is here to stay" well that by itself is in violation of the spirit of NTP and if they are so admittedly in violation of NTP, one hardly can blame other nations for not following it. Unless we believe that these nations are above law. Is that what I am hearing here?

Iran's problem isn't enrichment. It's having a West devil2 blame

by Anonymouse on

When Obama came to power he setup face to face negotiations with an Iranian delegation without pre-conditions.  That is what he promised, that is why many (including me) voted for him and that is what he delivered.

By both accounts (US and Iran) the negotiations went well and both agreed to a set of agreements to be ratified by Iran's parliament.  Of course that didn't happen and Islamic Republic's goozmashangs put an end to it.

Just recently Hillary Clinton (US State Department) announced that US does not have any issues with the Bushehr nuclear power plant and stated her reasons.  Now Bushehr enriches uranium and is a fully functional nuclear power plant for peaceful pursposes, isn't it?

So the problem is Islamic Republic and it is now all clear.  There are ways to get out of this dead end but Islamic Republic isn't interested.  All the "news" you see from their supporters here on i.com is just hogwash and I'm not going to waste time on them.

As for France and UK or any other industrialized nuclear country, the nuclear weapons are here to stay.  Once you have them you have to 'maintain' and test them, otherwise you don't know what'll happen to them.  Maintenance is a subject that is foreign to many Iranians and in Iran in particular, they just don't care and rather see the country collect dust than to clean it.

No country in the world really puts any weight on what the Islamic Republic of Iran says.  Everyone knows their doom and gloom goals and only their partners in crimes such as Hugo Chavez or other countries in shambles go to Iran to get some free money from Ahmadigooz and company!

And I thought Nuclear testing is banned

by Bavafa on

Perhaps a much more relevant discussion would be nuclear testing then calling Sarkozi/Ahmadinegad = Sargoozi/Ahamadigooz. Name calling is not much of a consequence in every day life of both nations but nuclear test could affect not only those citizens but the whole world.

Isn't this at the height of hypocrisy to plan, conduct nuclear testing all along when you are pushing for other countries to stop enrichment, which is far from a military application?

Anonymous Jaan Comparing Apples and Pétards Mouilles ...

by Darius Kadivar on

Sarkozy was Democratically Elected where as Ahmadinejad is a Dictator.

As to know what is going on here, the least you can do is come and see for yourself. I don't claim there are not demonstrations or that there are no problems here or even that I support him. I claim he will be re elected against all odds ...

I may be wrong but that is my Gut Feeling.

As for the Strikes their impact on public opinion seems to have had the opposite effect desired ...

Very Much like John Stewart's Sanity Rally which has convinced no one but their die hard fans and has become something of a Pétard Mouilles:

Jon Stewart Rally Shifts Blame to the News Media by David Carr ( NY Times)                          I Hope I am wrong and would personally Regret such an outcome and find the resurgence of a Sarah Palin in American politics as one of the most pathetic attempts of the American Right. However some rules prevail in politics. One of them being that if you try to compensate your deemed weakness with lack of concrete propositions and boast as Stewart does from a purely Moralistic viewpoint ... You are bound to lose ! That is precisely what happened when the Socialists tried to vilify Sarkozy as some kind of George Bush or worse a Le Pen. The Result was an overwhelming victory for Sarkozy in 2007 and a hopelessly divided Left. Now what he did with that Popularity in the years that followed notably due to his own arrogance or the International Financial Crisis that did not help is another debate   But the shortcomings of propositions as I mentioned above reduced at best to the Moralistic Upheaval of a few overpaid tv celebrities is unfortunately the current dilemma of the American left but also the French Left wing today.   Not to acknowledge this harsh reality is not going to help you win in 2012 ...

DK jaan didn't call his wife anything but Sargoozi = Ahmadigooz!

by Anonymouse on

I've been against Sargoozi's policies from his beginning, same goes for Ahmadigooz!  I'm a free citizen (not Government or a newspaper) and can call few dirty politicians by what they represent, nothing wrong about that.

Of all the things Sargoozi has done he has very little chance of getting re-elected.  As we speak aren't there street demonstrations turning violent in places and many arrests?

For all of Obama's healtcare trouble there were a only lot of rich people who were forced to fear to believe their healthcare premiums would go up and were protesting to save their nickel and dime.  Healthcare premiums will actually go down under Obama's healthcare. Bottom line no main stream and grass root widespread protests in the streets of America like it is now in France.
