The US has said the UN should consider more than just a no-fly zone over Libya, amid Security Council division on a draft resolution. US ambassador Susan Rice said a no-fly zone would only bring limited help. She hoped for an early vote on a draft. Russia expressed concern at some of the implications of the proposals and put forward a counter-resolution. Forces loyal to Col Gaddafi are taking ground from rebels, who say they fear "genocide" without swift UN action.

The resolution passed
by FG on Thu Mar 17, 2011 05:03 PM PDTAnd it authorizes a "no drive" zone as well as a no fly zone. See the NY Times online. I just posted the story over 5 minutes ago and it has yet to appear here.
The resolution has implications for Ir tan, should Khamenei attempt to "pull a Khadaffi." Perhaps it will embolden the Iranian resistence. If the latter arms and if some military defect, I'd think he won't be allow to slaughter civilians with his 30-year old jets. They'll be no match for American aircraft.
I can't help but think..
by waldo on Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:31 PM PDTthat all of those calling for American military intervention(yes a no fly zone is military intervention) will rip the US to shreds once the intervention starts. This includes the Libyan "rebels". Every time the US has military operations the Arab world criticizes them as defiling Arab lands. You can't have it both ways. You can't criticize for inaction then turn around and criticize for intervention. In my opinion the Arab league is very capable of establishing a no fly zone. They are just cowards, who want to sit back in their peanut gallery and criticize the West.
