by Kaveh Nouraee on Fri Mar 21, 2008 10:20 AM PDTWestwood is so Iranian, there is a bill on the city ballot to change the name back to its proper pronounciation of Vestvood.
As far as the fires, they go to the beach. You will even find pictures on this website of celebrations on the beach in Santa Monica.
"this event needs to be
by I'm not speaking Newzealandi, it's called English (not verified) on Thu Mar 20, 2008 07:24 AM PDT"this event needs to be eradicated".
Inform your friends to trash this ancient Iranian cultural tradition too (with lengthy articles here at Iraniancom), just for your supposed sake of racial and ethnic purity, and of course "modernity".
The wrong country!
by Kamangir on Wed Mar 19, 2008 08:36 PM PDTOf course, is not being condemned! Chaharshabe soori is a beautiful Persian tradition that has survived for a thousand years, including the centuries this practice as well as Norooz and many other Persian events were banned by the arabs! It survived thanks to real Persians and will keep surviving, no matter what the descendants of those nasty arabs do or 'say' to denigrate it.
Whoever doesn't like it can go back to kerbala or basra, charshanbesoori is not celebrated there! You got the wrong country.

by What have you been Esmokin? (not verified) on Wed Mar 19, 2008 02:04 PM PDTOkay 2 things. . .1) I didn't celebrate Charshambeh Soori 2) I live in Northern California not Southern. Having said that. . .WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN SMOKING?
Clearly you're out of touch with Southern California. . . "good luck trying that in Southern California"
You think people don't celebrate Norooz and Charshambeh Soori in Southern Cali? Hmmm let's see if you call the some government agencies in So Cal it will actually have a recorded message telling you to press 3 for Persian!!!!
Inasmuch as Jimmy Delshad is the Mayor of Beverly Hills, and the fact that the Governor of the State and the Mayor of LA acknowledge the celebrations, for the love of God Westwood is the biggest "little Tehran" outside of Tehran!!!!
You may not like the event (I am indifferent to all such events whether they are eastern or western), but to suggest that people would have a hard time celebrating this event in So Cal because of the fires means you know little about the Iranian community's grip on life in Southern California.
Hell you can't through a tennis ball in downtown LA or Beverly Hill without it hitting an Iranian. Try hanging out in the parks in LA and OC (and Vesona in Northern Cali) during 13 Bedar. . .Ahmadinezhad or not regardless of what political doo doo is going on at the time you won't be able to make it through the day in any of those locations if you don't speak Persian.
Oh and again not that I celebrate anything other than birthdays, but "Against This Event" who mentions safety issues and superstition in condemning this event clearly doesn't remember that Halloween is actually a celebration of dead folks' ghosts(talk about superstition). I am also sure that he/she doesn't read the news to see how many fires and burn victims turn out during the 4th of July celebrations(oops don't want to be a liar. . .I do celebrate 4th of July).
I always say that I can tolerate pretty much everything except for intolerance!
charshabeh soori
by Anonymouss (not verified) on Wed Mar 19, 2008 01:31 PM PDTStarting and jumping over fire in the streets is such a primitive act, same as Spain's running of the bulls or tomato fighting in the streets. good luck trying that in Southern California when fire destroyed 4000 homes.
Against it!?
by farokh2000 on Wed Mar 19, 2008 01:23 PM PDTYou probably have no memory of your childhood in Iran, or are you not Iranian at all?
Maybe you are a Fire Fighter who is giving free advice for fire safety?

against this event
by Against this event (not verified) on Wed Mar 19, 2008 12:08 PM PDTThis is a sign of backwrdness. its funny if this was an islamic ritual, everyone would be posting look how backwards islam is. this that. but since its ancient iranian ritual, its not being condemned here. lets face it. its not safe for kids. and its jus a superstitutious farce. this event needs to be eradicated.
