I think she said what a lot of people think about and have in mind given the coverage you see in the media these days of Iran and anything Iranian. Her statement, rather unfortunate for her, and I am sure made rashly, also reveals something about the type of thinking that goes on into the making of the current administration's outlook. Some Iranian intelletuals and entrepreneurs should take a step, write a strongly-worded petition, circulate it, and demand her dismissal and argue for a nuanced coverage of Iran and Iranian culture in the media. We can do it. Really. Our own media channels (satelite TV and radio channels as well as newspapers online or otherwise) should also publicize this thing. Please forward this news story to your colleagues, friends, etc. If a similar statement had been made against another ethnicity (or nationality), the story would have made it to the NY Times' front page.

As an American of Iranian descent I am calling on you to fire Debra Cagan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Coalition Affairs for her outrageous comment: “I hate all Iranians.”

Ms. Cagan made the comment earlier this month during an official meeting with British MPs discussing coalition efforts regarding Iraq and Iran; the comment was confirmed by three of the parliamentarians who attended the meeting.

I believe this remark by a top DoD official is destructive to our diplomatic efforts to create an international consensus on dealing with Iran’s behavior on the international stage.

Further complicating our diplomatic efforts, her remark may cause the Iranian people, one of the most pro-American populations in the region, to further distrust our policies and public officials when our government tries to reach out to them.

Coming from a high ranking representative of the United States, Ms. Cagan’s comment is not only damaging to American diplomatic efforts, but is also extremely insulting to me as an Iranian American. I deserve to be treated with more respect by my government officials.

I strongly believe that this racist and xenophobic comment should not be tolerated by the administration and Ms. Cagan should be removed from her post immediately.

In a time of heightened hostilities when the entire world is concerned about the potential for another military conflict in the Middle East, it is imperative that the Defense Department send a clear signal that Ms. Cagan’s remarks do not reflect the official position of the United States.
