Talieh Jan: I liked this picture so much, I put it in my blogs. Reading English translations of Farsi poems, and trying to figure out the original poem has always been a challenge for me, as so much is shifted around to polish the English presentation. I couldn't make out which poem of Hafez' this was, so I asked my readers if they could help locate the Farsi poem. I hate to be a wet blanket, but I feel responsible for reporting that two of my readers are doubting that this is a Hafez poem. Massoud, from Iran, says:

گمان نمی کنم از حافظ باشد.کلمات خورشید و زمین در دیوان حافظ نیست .البته کلمات آفتاب و خاک بسیار تکرار شده است ولی نه با چنان محتوایی که در نقاشی ترسیم شده است.در هر حال حرکت جالبیست

Another reader, Roya, says: "This is a nice saying and the painting on the wall makes it more beautiful but unfortunately it makes me more angry than happy. This quote is from Daniel Ladinsky I think from his book "The Gift". He claims he has seen Hafiz in his dreams and now he publishes books in the name of Hafiz. And I can't understand how publishers can be so ignorant to let him do that. If he has something to say he can publish it under his own name. I don't say this because it is Hafiz. I think a lie is a lie and it is wrong. Look at this poem :"God and I have become like two giant fat people living in a tiny boat. We keep bumping into each other and laughing" and search and see how people quote this from Hafiz."

I believe the wall project of Corcoran to be a beautiful idea, full of love and humanity, whether that is a Hafez poem or not. I hope Iranian scholars with multi-lingual concentration on Persian literature tackle the way Farsi poetry is being translated into other languages to ensure authenticity and accuracy of translations in the future. In the meantime, I continue to be grateful to you for your beautiful heart which beats big and joyful through anything you share with us.

Minneapolis CityPoem: The Sun Never Says, Hafez

This CityPoem is part of Corcoran Neighborhood’s efforts to make their area a better place: “We the Corcoran residents, in all our diversity, strive to strengthen, improve and protect the unique character, livability, and social fabric of our neighborhood. We endeavor to encourage and empower all residents, businesses and property owners to unite in addressing our common issues.”

The Corcoran Neighborhood is situated in the heart of South Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is bounded by East Lake Street to the north, East 36th Street to the south, Hiawatha Avenue to the east, and Cedar Avenue to the west.

Eric Gustafson: “The photo depicts a mural painted last year by neighborhood artist Elise Kyllo. Elise actually just completed another mural across the street from the first, and it features Hafiz as well. Like the first, it was a community collaboration between Elise and over 40 community members. This is the sort of thing the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization works to foster, and I believe it reflects the activist spirit of Minneapolis.”

The first mural was made in the summer of 2006, the second one in the spring of 2007.
