Hossein Nasr

The Garden of Truth

Centuries Later, Rumi's Words Continue to Inspire

National Public Radio, Morning Edition, September 28, 2007: One of the most popular poets among Western readers today is actually a long dead poet of the East. Rumi, the 13th century poet of the Persian empire, still inspires with his works evoking ecstasy and the divine. Rumi came from the tradition of mystical Islam. One of its better known features is the whirling dervishes whose swirling dance is aimed at creating a sense of transcendence. Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a noted scholar of Islam whose latest book is called The Garden of Truth, says there is one thing that those who read or listen to Rumi in translation miss. "In Persian, the sounds are intertwined in such a way that there is a total effect upon the soul, even if one does not understand every single word, and somehow one flows along with the music, as well as penetrating into the meaning that the poetry is supposed to convey," Nasr tells Renee Montagne >>>Full Text & Audio

Gol'e Bee Khaar

by Manoucher (not verified) on

I truly love being Madomak'e Chashm and seeing all turns and twists and defects of things, people, and thoughts, but let's not to fall to the same pit. Iranian people have judged the product of two coups and imperialists' conspiracy: the Pahlavi Regime and its elements and agents, by the 1357 Revolution. Neverthless, "Fekr'e Ma'aghoo Befarmaa, Gol'e Bee Khaar Kojaast?" Who is perfect?

Grand Charlatan!

by bacheh porroo (not verified) on

He may be a charlatan but let's face it, he is a Grand Charlatan. To those who are happily convinced by grand academic names and titles and measure the quality by the number of books and articles written (never mind that a large majority of them are repeats on the same theme), he is a biggy. But our Islamic scholar, by his own admission, cannot speak the language or write a single article in Arabic!! I mean the language of the faith in which he is supposed to be an expert. Is it not strange? Let's turn to his morals! A one time deputy of the Shah in the Aryamehr University, and later a court minister and a private secretary to the Shahbanu is now hailed as an approved and accepted patron of Islamic culture in the Islamic Republic's religious centers across the US and Europe! They have even invited him, recently, to attend a big event in Tehran to honor his contributions! I have to be careful here because he is nominated as the Iranian of the Day by the daughter of one of his most fanatical supporters (i.e. Davar (Iran) Ardalan whose mother Shirin (Bakhtiar) Ardalan is our own editor's auntie). And guess what, Davar and cousin JJ were both one time Islamists:

For Iranian.com, Dr Nasr must be declared Iranian of ALL DAYS :)

Talk about oghdeyee..

by yervand (not verified) on

Well.. the person "AmirT" below is your classic oghdeyee iranian on iranian hater.

I bet you never read one of his books or attended one of his speeches.. let alone be accepted to one of his class.

Nasr is a genius. Recognize.

AmirT

I don't like him.

by AmirT on

He may be knowledgeable, but he's so az-khod-raazi, with the demeanor of a perfect aakhond e darbaari. I wouldn't be surprised if he expects people and his pupils to bow to him and kiss his hands, while he in turn would easily bow to the monarch and kiss his or her hands. (A true product of Iranian hierchical culture!)

He may be very knowledgeable and whatnot, but he is not a true scholar, because he is very convinced of his own ideas and devoid of any doubt or any original thought. He may have written a hundred books all right, but if you read them you see that they have huge overlaps and repetitions of each other.

I think I am very fortunate that I have never been his student, because he might have made me slave away for him and write a chapter for one of his forthcoming books!

Dr. Hossein Nasr

by Saeed Rafie (not verified) on

By far, Dr. Hossein Nasr is one of the greatest and most knowledgeable Iranian in our era (search for his many publications and articles on web).

I was fortunate to be one of his students at the Arya-Mehr (Sharif) University when he was the Provost.

Best Regards,

Saeed Rafie
