There was a short story in Persian literature textbooks in Iran about a strand of wheat that too proud for his own good. Do you remember?
As I recall, it went like this: In a wheat field, there was one particular young wheat stalk that was taller than everyone else. It was proud of its height to the point of arrogance. It constantly reminded everyone of its superiority and looked down on everyone else. This went on and on until one day there was a major thunderstorm. While everyone else was bending down with the wind and laying low, the black wheat stalk would refuse to conform. He would not heed their advice and call them cowards. This went on for a while until suddenly a lightning bolt started descending towards the field. Of course, it sought the tallest object in the field and instantly burned the black wheat stalk that was sticking out. As the last parts of his body were burning into oblivion he glanced at the field one last time and finally understood what they were trying so hard to tell him. -- Shoosh
