Not sure what to say
by Anon ymous (not verified) on Sat Nov 15, 2008 04:40 PM PSTAs a non mosalman girl who went to high school in Iran. I was actually one of these girls when I was 18 and living back home. I always wore my hijab really good since I did not want to have and encounter with the regime's extremists. I was not treated fairly in my beloved country but in noway I can bring myself to see anyone making fun of these innocent girls. To begin with, I have big problem with pictures of people published on the internet without their permission. I am sure these beautiful happy faces don't even know a bunch of losers are sitting here in the West making fun of them. I wish all the girls in this picture happiness and success in the future. I did not get a chance to go to university in Iran, they did not treat me right, there. I admire these young faces and hope we don't see pictures like this on the Iranian.com again, no one has the right to make fun of anyone.
JJ, can you come up with quizzes that are designed for people with an adult's mind level not grade 3 kids.
shame.

its not a good feeling.
makes you feel very alienated.
and yeh, many people who live in iran actually like it there and agree with the regime, and even if it didnt exist theyd still keep their hejab.

Why it got deleted?!!
JJ, see now when some of the contributers complain about your unfair censorship policy and you being overly sensitive and have a tendency to be "havaa-daareh" pro iri

by Ali P. on Tue Nov 11, 2008 06:56 AM PSTI looked at this picture for a long time, and I failed to come up with anything funny to say about it.
Then I read the comments.
Nope.
I didn't find any of them funny either.

We are all Iranians.
What brings us together, at least on this site, is our love for Iran.
Last thing we need, is further alianation of each other.
I am not going to draw any conclusions, or take a jab at you, just because you choose to dress up differently .You may have been forced to dress up that way, but I do not know that ( and if you are indeed forced to wear this outfit, there is yet another reason for me not to poke fun of your picture).
Take the dress code enforced by IRI away, and we still have many women who choose to wear the hijab.
I just hope they'd treat us the same: Not holding tight jeans, heavy make up( you know you do!), and other Western junk we wear here, against us.

got dictionary?
by Anonymouses (not verified) on Mon Nov 10, 2008 03:52 PM PSTDear negar,
I think "piadeh sho ba ham berim" is appropriate for this sentence since some of us here are so "beesavad" comparing to you! lol : )
"nothing is sacred" is meant to promote contestation and subversion of the hegemonic discourse.
what's funny about a group
by negar on Mon Nov 10, 2008 02:40 PM PSTwhat's funny about a group of catholic school girls wearing uniforms? these girls have been marginalized enough in Iran, there really is no need for the diaspora to also marginalize them by making fun of what they have to wear to school. until about 10 years ago it was almost impossible to find a decent highschool in Tehran where chador wasn't mandatory.
on a slightly different note, quizzes like this (another one i can think of off the top of my head is a picture of ahmadinejad with a group of American school girls) encourage hypersexualization of women. almost every single "funny caption" i've read is implicitly or explicitly about sex. that reveals a lot about how these supposedly open-minded and modern respondents see women: not very different from their "backward and traditional" counterparts in Iran.
Jahanshah, as far as i understand the slogan "nothing is sacred" is meant to promote contestation and subversion of the hegemonic discourse. with these quizzes you're only further naturalizing the stereotypes and discriminations. stablizing the mainstream is way too easy. if you believe nothing is sacred, rise above "sacred" and challenge it.
Yeah well..

"Nothing. Your question is funny. These are our new generation who are staying in Iran and i am proud of them. "
I liked this post the most. Had to requote it.
On the fun part:
The fascinating thing about the chador and hejab is how much time and money Iranian women in Iran use to fix their faces since thats the part shown durint courtship.
So if her face is diamond, the rest under that chador might not be jewelry... if you know what I mean..
Just giving some dating tips for some of the bald headed overweight brothas in the US that one day might order a bride from Iran!!

they're not pathetic
by IRANdokht on Mon Nov 10, 2008 01:42 PM PSTCalifornia born and raised
you shouldn't look at them as pathetic. They are young girls who grew up in an islamic country where this is the women's uniform that is forced upon them at schools or even at home.
I am sorry you don't "feel" anything. I do feel for anyone who is restricted and not free, whether imposed by others or self-inflicted.
