The Guardian: In the latest and perhaps most unusual attempt by the Bush administration to choke off Iran's access to the global financial system, the US treasury department yesterday designated a New York real-estate partnership as a front company for Bank Melli, one of Iran's biggest state-owned banks. In a related action, the acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York filed a civil complaint yesterday seeking a forfeiture of the alleged straw company's 40% ownership stake in a 36-storey building on Fifth Avenue near Rockefeller Centre. The US government had already seized more than $3.1m (£2m) in two bank accounts in the US. The treasury alleged in a statement that Bank Melli had established Assa Corporation as a straw company in order to hold the ownership stake in the prime real estate>>>

31 days left of the Bush days and counting
by Jamshid Niavarani (not verified) on Sat Dec 20, 2008 07:40 PM PSTThis has been the worst U.S. Administration in the history of the United States. George Bush has run this country's name into the mud. Even Iraq, a war torn nation is throwing their shoe's at the President of the United States. It is high time that the Administration make a 180 degree turn around and embrace the Iranian theocracy. Chances are this bank is owned by some Southern Lebanese group or some Shia Pakistani group. Iranians are too smart to get directly involved in "front" businesses. Every Iranian, Iranian immigrant and American born in Iran, in the United States has a "Bank Melli" account. Are we to assume that all the Iranian-Americans in the 50 States have some diabolical scheme to make nuclear weapons? Are we to believe that "grandma sekina bagoom", living in Beverly Hills is involved in making an atom bomb.
The stupidity of the Bush Administration is never ending.
They put the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the Terrorist list. Do they know that every male in Iran must join the Armed forces in Iran for a mandatory 2 year military service before they are granted an Iranian passport? Do they know that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards are part of the Iranian Military. Some of these Revoltionary Guards just monitor the traffic, like a traffic cop. Are we to assume, "Pasdar Hasan Kachal", an Iranian Revoltionary guard Traffic Cop, on Pasdaran Street in Niavaran, Tehran, is somehow involved in some terrorist activity?
The stupidity continues in the Bush Administration. And people wonder why shoes are being thrown at Bush.
We are lucky that they don't hurl feces at Bush. God knows he's full of SH*T.
444!
by Killjoy (not verified) on Sat Dec 20, 2008 02:33 PM PSTI think the U.S. government should take the "bank" hostage for 445 days to beat the Iranian side by just one day.
Can you imagine the Iranian side's reaction after losing their hard-earned title as the longest hostage-takers in the Guinness Book of Records?
That hurts the Iranian "pride" even more!
The US is going to pressure businesses?! What a joke
by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on Sat Dec 20, 2008 02:21 PM PSTLOOOOOOOOOOOOL. I cannot wait for that. Even at the risk of tanking more people economically, they'll do it because AIPAC has to strangle everyone until it can breathe and be rational.
I can't wait for that. Do you know that DUFUS Bill O'reilly was launching attacks on GE for selling home appliances so our aunts and sisters could microwave popcorn and make Ghormeh Sabzi??? What a joke America and the news is becoming. Yet these con(servative)-men complain about businesses leaving America. Thanks AIPAC!! More American than apple pie!
This type of propaganda smells like WAR is near!!
by farrad02 on Sat Dec 20, 2008 12:49 PM PSTThe ownership stake of Iranians in this building and other places is not something the Americans just found out about. This is all old news. CIA and FBI must have known about all this (and other properties) for years. But the question is WHY NOW?!
This smells and looks like the start of a propaganda campaign to get the American people ready and receptive for the Israeli pre-emptive attacks that are reportedly being planned for the final weeks of the Bush administration!!
This is not good!
What's the matter? ;-)
by Zion on Sat Dec 20, 2008 12:05 PM PSTI see a lot of uneasy "laughter". Nervous already?
First the ancient artifacts in Chicago, now this
by Anonymous8 (not verified) on Sat Dec 20, 2008 01:08 AM PSTThe purpose of sanctions must only be to insult Iranian people.
They think this will force Iran to stop nuke program? They don't understand anything. This just makes people support IRI.
I bet you some Jewish orgnization will take over it for free
by verytass on Fri Dec 19, 2008 10:52 PM PSTAnother Israeli (Levey) in the name of US is going after our $$$
by gol-dust on Fri Dec 19, 2008 09:44 PM PSTAIPAC here it goes again! No wonder the world loves you so much! And no wonder the more we get to know you the more we hate you 2!
Who IS your God anyway? That must be some kinda god! The name of the bank is ASSA for a reason! it means you ASSes!
bank melli is an Iranian bank
by Ali Sefati (not verified) on Fri Dec 19, 2008 05:52 PM PSTbanks in Iran are state owned and yah the state has a nuclear program that doesn't mean that building is involved with Iran's nuclear program.
I must tell you, Zionists are getting very desperate.
This must be a joke
by Abarmard on Fri Dec 19, 2008 04:57 PM PSTOr some politicians are getting to desperate.
This is a joke...
by AAA (not verified) on Fri Dec 19, 2008 02:39 PM PSTAll i can do is to laugh at this non-sense. a more plausable argument is: america and isreal are terrorist countries for killing innocent Muslims.
Mordam Az Khande!
by ghalam-doon on Fri Dec 19, 2008 02:25 PM PSTAn elaborate scheme to funnel funds to Bank Melli which by the way is the largest bank in Iran where many Iranians have accounts in it and have nothing to do with this alleged nuclear prolifiration program.
Meanwhile there is a real nuclear program in the middle-east with real nuclear weapons potentially targeted toward Iran and the US government along its citizens provides overt and covert finiancial assistance for it.
They don't even have the current Iranian flag to show on their ridiculous "news" show.
HAAA HAAA HAAA all the way to the Bank Melli!
LOL
by Saman on Fri Dec 19, 2008 01:58 PM PSTHAAAA HAAAA HAAAAA ...now that's dirty business. People keep saying these mullahs are stupid!
