Lloyd Miller in Iran

Jazz and Persian classical music on National Iranian TV in mid-1960s

Such a fantastic find. Both clips below were posted only yesterday, so I feel so fortunate for having found him first! I think everyone should know about Miller and his association with Iran. In the first clip take a look at his jam session (he is on Santur) with his jazz band, playing Gol-e-Gandom. "The original 1965 TV taping of the highly acclaimed Oriental Jazz vinyl piece "Gol-e Gandom" broadcast by KBYU with Pres Keys on piano from the Oriental Jazz." In the second clip he is performing Persian classical music on oud & tombak with Azar Hashemi on santur. Read about his amazing life here. When you get to the part of his life after 1957, which talks about Iran, click on the hyperlinked "Iran" words to see his photographs with Shah and Farah and other nostalgic stuff about Iran. It's like a treasure chest!:

I recall early 1970s, Friday

by Shahrokh T (not verified) on

I recall early 1970s, Friday nights Mr. Korosh Ali Khan has a jazz program on NIRT. Unfortunately, I was to young back then to get to know Jazz music. Good Luck Dr. Miller and I am glad that Iran was a good experience for you.

You are wrong, Dr Miller: We wont forget you and your music.

Jazz music is way too beautiful to fade away and be pushed into oblivion by the likes of Rock'n Roll. And add the Persian element to it, like you did, and it becomes noor-e alaa noor!! :-)

Anyway, I'm one of the administrators on Farsi Wikipedia. It is among the top 10 most visited sites in Iran. Ive made a biography page for you and your music:

//fa.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D9%84%D9%88%DB%8C%D8%AF_%D9%85%DB%8C%D9%84%D8%B1&redirect=no

And I sure as hell will buy your CDs!

Baa tashakkor va aarezooye tandorostee.

I had a discussion with a famous contemporary jazzman once, and he was telling me one of the reasons Jazz got sidelined was because "the government" (FBI? and I'm only quoting) began introducing and distributing heroin among the musicians in the fifties. What do you think about that? And let's say it wasn't the government, but that the drug became widespread for unrelated reasons, would you say that's one of the reasons for the deviation this music took?

By the way, it's great to have you here!

Miller in Iran article

Again thank you for your kind remarks. Khanom-e 'Party Girl'-e gerami, bande-ye nachiz shayestegi-ye vazheha-ya mehrebanetun nistam. Yes in the 1960s I was developing a new branch of jazz I called Oriental Jazz which did not blend but placed jazz side by side with other musical cultures which could easily have become the new direction in jazz. Unfortunately rock invaded the world and like the Mongols destroyed music leaving little of jazz or anything else that sensitive and intelligent beings could enjoy. So 'Oriental Jazz' died and along with it so did I as a possible jazz innovator except for a few years on NIRT in Iran during the 1970s. Maybe some future generation, if everyone doesn't go deaf from the loud 'music' that is everywhere, might find some old CD of us long gone jazzmen and, like the Rosetta Stone, decipher the dead language of jazz and possibly enjoy a few tunes.

Fabulous. Lloyd Miller and I read your wonderful comments and he thanks you with all your heart for your kind words. Lloyd is an amazing person. He also authored a book titled Music and Dance in Persia:The Art of Avaz. He loves all things Iranian more than anything else. He is active and a real crazy but fun guy. Thanks again.

Dear Darius,

Seeds that flourished, Gol-e Khar-Zahr-e!

Well,

  • Islamist; Happy.
  • Non-Islamist but naives who joined the riot to topple the Shah; Guilty and Regretful, keep saying "Shah Baayad Meeraft" in order to justify themselves and ease the chronic inner pain caused by remorse.
  • Those, Neither Nor; Hope-Sick and in heart, cursing the rest.

This is us. This is our legacy, no more no less.
My dad used to say;
"This nation is doomed", it was only 1972 and I could feel his pain but unable to diagnose or understand the WHY?

When listening, I had tears in my eyes (bionic ones have as well!), I hope to see a color video of a beautiful persian woman playing santoor in Iran soon.

Thanks for posting.

Santour is integrated quit nicely into the Jazz framework. Never heard of this before. Quite a find. Could have been the start of a new branch of Jazz like Jazz Samba. Why not?

I had seen this link but not the video. I would love to interview Miller. He was often at the Shiraz International Arts Festival. I wonder if he has an email or office / contact number.

Thanks for the wonderful video.
