At Aryamehr Stadium (March 1978) Shah in Presence of the Shahbanou and Women delegations gives a speech to justify his White Revolution policies in favor of more freedom to women and their necessary Emancipation and blames the unholy alliance between Red (indirect allusion to communists) and Black (religious fundamentalists) who are resisting the progress of the White Revolution towards what he calls "The Great Civilization".

Are there any books in English that describe Iran's standings economically (infrastructures, schools, hospitals, etc. GDP, Income per capita, etc.) and socially before the Pahlavis?? Thanks.
What's Really Sad,
by Kaveh Nouraee on Tue Mar 11, 2008 04:53 PM PDTis that after all of these monarchs, and after 30 years of living under the iron turban of the mollahs, the fact remains that Mohammad Reza Shah overestimated the people's ability to get out of the dark ages.
People whose existence had always been hand to mouth, living day by day could not possibly understand the first rule of economic growth. All economies have one point of origin, and trickle down the socio-economic ladder from there. The higher socio-economic classes benefit initially, enabling them to create business, and create jobs for the next class, who in turn circulate it downward to the next level, and so on.
The monarchy was far from perfect, and had many, many flaws, and accountability was not present when it should have been.
But the Shah felt that Iran deserved better than to be just another backwards country. He felt that Iran deserved more.
I would hate to think he was wrong about that.

by Anonymousk (not verified) on Tue Mar 11, 2008 04:16 PM PDTNader: It is precisely the opposite.
When the Shah thought the country is able to stand up on its own from the backwardness and economic devestation that the Quajar dynasty, occupation of Iran by Russian troops, etc. had inflicted on Iran, he decided to stop "kissing the West's Ass" by confronting OPEC and Criticizing the Zionist. And that is precisely why the West orchestrated the velvet revolution of 1978. Please read this book. Every single Iranian should read this book, btw.

And tell me when the oil was discovered in Iran by a Biritish scientist in 1920's, do you really think we were in any shape technologically and economically to build our own infrastructures to extract the oil.
To this date, We cannot build our own refinaries (hence, the oil rationing) and have to depend on Western companies and Russians who milk us for everything we've got because we have no other choice but to depend on their technological know-how. We still can't refine our own oil and what we have is from the Shah's era built by the Westerners.
This anti-imperiliasit bogus arguments are nothing but to justify our own failures as an Islamic civilization. We need to wake up from our denial and take responsibility for our own actions.
And no, I don't want moarchy back in Iran. But please don't be so intellectually lazy and emotional.
I wasn't even alive during the revolution but since I have researched extensively to find out what really happened.
Nader and like...
by Anonymous XY (not verified) on Tue Mar 11, 2008 04:14 PM PDTLikes of me defending shah are not shahollahi, but responsible iranollahi, facing realities as they were, rather than as wished them to be. People of iran had a choice better than shah (bakhtiar) and after decades of screaming against dictatorship of shah, ALL from left to right, from intellectuals to intelligent university students, ALL thought that they had the answer and that the answer was that shah must go, and none could see what was coming when they bowed to khomeini and lined up behind him until it was too late.
My point is:
(1) Those who still consider shah a bad choice for his time need to offer an alternative that could rule iran. And please do not talk about mosaddegh as he is praised like any other ineffective dead iranian shia emam. There were only 3 choices: shah, bakhtiar, and khomeini. And all those arrogant know-it-all revolutionaries, left, right, and intellectuals, chose the worst amongst those 3 choices.
(2) We need to discard this culture of blaming others for every failure. Shah is responsible for any failures of his time (as well as any achievements), but there were 15 million others who are to blame for all that happened in February 1979. WE, collectively made the wrong choice and cheered even when khomeini was murdering OUR youth by hundreds each day. WE should take responsibility of selling a modern-day dictator (shah) to buy a 1400-year old dictator (khomeini). We did not read his books (tozihol massael or velayate faghih) while lots of university students were showing off of having read Mao's red book. WE need to abandon the culture of blaming others, let it be foreigners or the shah. Had we been wise, neither could have influenced our determination few times when we had the chance to improve our lives in the past century. Shah is to be credited and blamed for his time, but that is all. He was not responsible for either what was before him or after him, in both cases we the iranians had a lot to do with the wrong choices that we made. WE need to take that responsibility rather than keep blaming the shah for eternity as excuse for justification of our continued failure in making a decent country for our citizens.
Back then we were years
by azadi 5 (not verified) on Tue Mar 11, 2008 03:41 PM PDTBack then we were years ahead of our time in that region. remember Dubai back then? it was pretty much nothing, we were decades ahead of all these Arab countries in the region because of Shah and his vision for Iran, now we are decades behind. Same goes with the women rights and human rights in general in Iran.

by Nader on Tue Mar 11, 2008 03:50 PM PDTThe best defense for Shahollahies is to compare themselves with Hezbollahies every time they are cornered!
Open your eyes and see why we are in this mess to begin with!?
Our "dear" dictator was so involved with kissing West's behind that he forgot about a "tiny" situation taking palce in his own backyard!
Island of stability my foot. He dropped the ball for all of us.
Now go back and keep comparing him with the current regime, MKO traitors and the rest of incompetent opposition. Like there is a difference!!
Yeah, he was the man!!
Too bad CIA was not available this time around to rescue his royal tooshie!

According to the newspaper E'temad, at least two women are scheduled to be executed in Evin Prison in Tehran on 5 March. Three others are at risk of imminent execution. All five women were convicted of murdering their husbands and sentenced to qesas (retribution in kind).
//www2.amnesty.se/uaonnet.nsf/senastezope/C2E...
Why so much husband killings? Because the age of marriage is 9 or 13 (legal pedophilia according to sharia law) and these poor women end up marrying much older men because of poverty.
"See Husband-killing on the rise in Iran. Also read the stories of some of these women here on the Amnesty International site.
Shahla Moazami, a criminologist in Iran, performed a conclusive research in 2003 on the topic of "spouse-killings". These were her findings:
"From her interviews, Moazami found a clear and common pattern in the stories of the female killers. The women married young, often 12-14 years old, and they had from 5 to 7 children. At the time of the murder their average age was 29 years old. Many of them tell that their husband had lost interest in them, and they felt that their beauty was fading.
When a new man takes an interest in them, they fall easily for him. The law gives women few possibilities to get a divorce, and the murder of the husband is planned and done together with the new boyfriend. Only 33% of the women did the killing on their own. Moazami also found cases where women, sometimes with the assistance of their daughters, killed a violent husband.
Moazami thinks there are several structural causes to spouse killing. She mentions poverty, illiteracy, traditional opinions and Iranian women's position in marriage and society. Young marriage age is also important. Moazami thinks that the women were too young to understand marriage when they married at 12-14 years old, and it was difficult for them make their own demands." That is how well-orchestrated the propaganda must have been. I can't help it but to admire those in charge of manufacturing the propaganda pieces.
The Shah did not have much of a propagnada machination in place and did not spend much on it unlike what IRI's vast propaganda and spy network apparatus across the globe.

What is this...
by Anonymous XY (not verified) on Tue Mar 11, 2008 01:59 PM PDTWhat is this reality that commenters claim that he was out of touch with?
is it that he was out of touch with the reality of what mullas (from khomeini to khamenei), leftists (from kianouri to rajavi), and pseudo-intellectuals (from doctor yazdi to doctor ahmadinejad) had planned for take-over of iran.
He is gone for ever, but we must stop lying for the sole sake of demonizing him before we realize the realities of iran where people had a better choice (aka bakhtiar) but were not ready for it. The same people, 98% of whom voted for islamic republic, were screaming that he was too progressive, as they chose a 1400 year old mulla raised in Qom and trained in najaf and his equally antiquated ideology to decide their destiny. Is that the reality that you are all referring to? Or is it more precisely the realities of majority of revolutionaries who complained about azadi-zanan and eslahate-arzi and free education for all and ...?
I wonder what happens if people of iran are given a choice for their tomorrow. What would people choose if they can choose for a single day between shah's regime of 1978 and islamic regime of 2008, with no other choice available? What do you think the majority of iranians would like their tomorrow to look like, that of under the dictatorial shah or under the islamic republic?

Shah's views on Women:
Oriana Fallaci: I am beginning to suspect that women have counted for nothing in your life ...
Mohammad Reza Shah: Here I am really afraid you’ve made a correct observation... women are important in a man’s life only if they’re beautiful and charming and keep their femininity and... this business of feminism, for instance. What do these feminists want? What do you want? You say equality. Oh! I don’t want to seem rude, but... you’re equal in the eyes of the law but not, excuse my saying so, in ability.
Oriana Fallaci: No, Majesty?
Mohammad Reza Shah: No. You’ve never produced a Michelangelo or a Bach. You’ve never even produced a great chef. And if you talk to me about opportunity, all I can say is ‘are you joking? Have you ever lacked the opportunity to give history a great chef? You’ve produced nothing great, nothing! ... You’re schemers, you are evil. All of you.[

If the United Stated took her course, like shah of Iran, toward her demise and into the oblivion while being on the top of its game it is not becasue of this or because of that but becasue of the improper "Kissing" when kissing was altogher not permissible under the existing conditions ...
