From containment to engagement
A far more realistic approach to world problems in the post-Cold
War era
By Majid Tehranian
A policy of engagement in the Persian Gulf would call for the United States to play an entirely a different role in that region. Comparable to the role that Britain played in the 19th century world affairs, that role could be that of a "balancer of power." Instead of isolating Iran and Iraq, the two most important countries in the region, the United States should act as an honest broker.... go to article

* Cracking open the door to dialogue with Iran, (Washington Post) - In introducing a discussion Monday on "The United States and Iran: A New Beginning," James A. Bill, the director of the Wendy and Emery Reves Center for International Studies at the College of William and Mary, crystallized the small opening of the door provided by conciliatory signals between the two countries and the perceived changes in Tehran and Washington. "It is difficult to slam it shut and difficult to open it wider." For his part, Ruhi K. Ramazani, one of the most eminent U.S. academics on Iran, criticized scholars and journalists for neglecting the "global context" of "the mother of all surprises," the election last May of Iranian President Mohammed Khatemi... full text
* Khamenei calls for ``high wall'' against U.S., (Reuters) - Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday rejected any talks with the United States and said Iran should raise a ``solid and high wall'' to keep out U.S. influences. Khamenei singled out the dangers of U.S. cultural and scientific influences, in sharp contrast with a recent call by President Mohammad Khatami, a relative moderate, for contacts between Iranian and American academics and artists... full text
HUMAN RIGHTS
* Fear of imminent execution / Flogging, (Amnesty International) - Hossein Dowlatkhah was reportedly sentenced to death on 18 June 1997 by a revolutionary court in Tehran on charges of corruption and embezzlement. He was also accused of organizing parties with drugs, for which he was sentenced to flogging. According to information received by Amnesty International, Hossein Dowlatkhah's appeal against his conviction and sentence was recently rejected by the Supreme Court, which reportedly upheld the death sentence against him. Hossein Dowlatkhah is believed to have been officially informed that he is to be executed by firing squad. His sole chance of escaping execution now rests with the possibility of a pardon by the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, on the recommendation of the Head of the Judiciary... full details

Letter to the editor
The Washington Post
Wednesday, February 4, 1998; Page A18
In his Jan. 9 letter, "Held Hostage in Tehran," diplomat Bruce Laingen suggests that the Iranian seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran was somehow a greater offense than the CIA-engineered overthrow of a popularly elected and supported Iranian government headed by Prime Minister Mosaddeq in 1953... full text

QUOTE UNQUOTE
The coup was far worse
While the embassy takeover and the hostage holding were against all international norms and constituted a great injustice... they did not make a fundamental change in the course of American history the way the 1953 intervention in Iran did for the people of that country. [Former U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Tehran] Mr. Laingen is correct to dispute any equation of these two events, but for the wrong reason: The coup was far worse.
