I think I'm in love --- again! 127 is my new favorite band :o) A couple of years ago I heard 127's "My Sweet Little Terrorist Song", which I enjoyed. It's very rare to hear a good song in English by an Iranian band, but they pulled it off. Then came their amazing Khosrow e Khooban video which was a big hit on the internet. Then I heard nothing. I'm sure they have been well-known in the Iranian underground music scene, but honestly I don't follow anything outside iranian.com, which shows how shallow and uninformed I am :o) Anyway... last weekend I met two (wonderful) 127 band members Sohrab Mohebbi and Salmak Khaledi at the home of BeyondPersia.com's Lalé Welsh and Amir Salamat near San Francisco. We listened to their entire new album "Khal Punk" and I was quite devastated by their musical range (mixing rock, rap, jazz, Iranian... ) and powerful lyrics. Their songs are addictive, and smart, and fun, and full of energy and lots and lots of plain truth. Ladies and gentleman, we have another super band! [American Tour dates] I asked Sohrab Mohebbi to send the lyrics to a few of the songs on Khal Punk. Here's the first:
LISTEN: 2 MINUTES OF THE SONG

127 Rocks
by Abtin (not verified) on Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:41 AM PDTBought their CD a couple of weeks ago and have been playing it ever since. I love these guys, can't wait to see them at Elbo room on 18th.
After decades of tired old crappy music from the luminaries in LA, suddenly there is innovation in Iranian music. Artists like Kiosk, Mohsen Namjoo and now 127 are leading the way.
Well my friends, it's about time!
Can't wait

127
by Parham on Fri Jun 06, 2008 12:09 AM PDT127 started on questionable grounds for me, but they also got yours truly with their newly-released album, which I'm ordering right now on CD Baby. The new stuff is very different from the old (meaning stuff they did about 3 or 4 years ago), and it's been generally a hit around my place too, although I've only listened to their myspace page and online demos. That piano and trombone combo, together with the wild lyrics and groovy tunes make a very fun combination. It reminds me very much of good old days spent listening to The Pogues. The album is not without its boo-boos from what I can gather from the demos, but it's all together yet another step in the right direction in Iranian alternative music.
For those who like 127's new material, there's also a new album by the band Firewater called "The Golden Hour" that I recommend very much, though it's all in English. Here's a sample:

Good music!
by Monda on Thu Jun 05, 2008 09:52 PM PDTThey are all of the above. And their lyrics go beautifully with their music. I heard 127 for the first time on Beyond Persia's NowRooz podcast singing Khosrow e Khooban. They sure got me off my seat! Can't wait to hear them live.
Instant fan!
