The number of women who perform naghaali -- dramatic recitation of Ferdosi's epic poetry -- are fewer than the number of fingers on one hand. And Saghi Aghili is the most passionate. She was known as Irangord, but has now changed her stage name to Neda Afarid, apparently in honor of Neda Agha Soltan. Here she performs "Raaze Ghatle Ferdosi" (Ferdosi's Murder Mystery), directed by Ali Farhadpour. Also see another performance against velayate fagih.

A misapprehension
by Gilgamesh on Sat Apr 10, 2010 03:17 AM PDTDear Yana,
I am sorry to hear that you took my remarks as an insult to the intellectual and artistic waves that presently exists in Iran. The phrase: lack of intellectual...........is followed by "upheavals" meaning that regardless of all the talented individuals in Iran and Iranians abroad, the present political suituation does not allow it to actually flourish as rapidly as it should. I was merely showing my regret for not seeing more great female as well as male performers in various fields of arts. This, per se, does not mean that I am dismissing the actual existence of many who do exist at present time!
By the way, I myself am a graduate of RADA ( The Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts), and naturally have highest of expectations from any performer. Neda's performance here, at best, is average.

Prelude To a Persian Rennaissance ...
by Darius Kadivar on Fri Apr 09, 2010 04:20 PM PDTI've got this gut feeling that our 30 years experience of living in the Dark Ages will slowly but surely give way to a totally new Iran which will mesmerize and surprise us all in a positive and constructive way ...

To Gilgamesh...
by Yana on Fri Apr 09, 2010 10:40 AM PDTYou wrote "Needless to say that I fully appreciate her courage and individuality, especially as a woman stranded in the lack of intellectual as well as cultural upheavals of our country at present time, but this does not mean that I'm going to be easy on her when it comes to art". I took it as an insult to all those wonderful highly intelligent people that I met on my visit back home in 2001. You betray them by your statement and that makes me sad because I met extremely talented people that put me to shame for having wasted so much of my own. And every artist in his/her own way has a unique gift only given to them and should NOT be compared. I had never seen a woman does naghali before and I loved this one, you should too :)
wow its a new style of naghali

Cheap Parody
by Mahvash Shahegh on Fri Apr 09, 2010 05:51 AM PDTIn my opinion, this piece is a cheap parody of and travesty to the concept of naghghali.
These women naghghal will be better off if first read Shahnameh and watch some Morshed's naghghali and then start their own act!
I have seen Ham acting
by Gilgamesh on Fri Apr 09, 2010 04:27 AM PDTI have seen Ham acting plenty here and there, but this is the ultimate! She lacks the very basic tools of a versatile actor such as pitch, tone, movement, grace, to portray and project a classical dramatic role such as this. I wish she had taken time to read Hamlet's advice to the players, especailly the following segment:
Nor do not saw the air too much with your hand, thus, but use all gently; for in the very torrent, tempest, and( as I may say) whirlwind of your passion, you must acquire and beget a temperance that may give it smoothness.
Hamlet Act III Sc. II
Needless to say that I fully appreciate her courage and individuality, especially as a woman stranded in the lack of intellectual as well as cultural upheavals of our country at present time, but this does not mean that I'm going to be easy on her when it comes to art!
With much love and gratitude for true arts-Gilagamesh.
I loved it! thank you.

I guess, there was a good reason that there were only few women!
by obama on Thu Apr 08, 2010 06:17 PM PDTI am looking forward to see more women who can capture the real spirit of it.
Is it supposed to be 1000 years ago? I love her latest style of sunglasses, the red hair and shick gloves! Oh, the tehrani pronounciation, and when she gestures with both hands to demonstrate talking, is a typical western gesture, isn't it? The ditch that is a site of excavation for new construction is the least of my concern.
However, i truly appreciate her love for Perdowsi (dervies from paradise) and our iranian history. Wish her happiness and success!
BTW keep the Saghi, sounds better for what you do. Neda is Soltani. Appreciate the gesture though. Saghi is persian, neda moslem. doesnt' go with perdowsi.

by SamSamIIII on Thu Apr 08, 2010 04:23 PM PDTRegardless of the decore or the style, the good lady has the passion & dedication which, come to think of it is all that matters in contemporary Iran where female gender is presented as a mere side note or passive cheerleader of ommatie's take of our heritage . Having said that I hope in her next show she would practice Ferdowsi's spirit in speach(Goftaar) too and avoid using such words as "Jadid" when it's Persian acronym "Noe" is present.
Cheers to her !!!
Thanks JJ

Forgive me for being pedantic here - based on your logic perhaps a pure white backgroud could have emphasized the Naghaal even better ?
