Photo essay: Child of the revolution

by Jahanshah Javid
02-Dec-2007

My cousin, who just returned from a visit to Iran, called today and suggested that there should be some discussion or a dialogue between us and our children's generation. He said many Iranian youths today commonly turn to their parents and say: "We are suffering because YOU made a revolution." I've heard it many times myself, not from my daughter Mahdiyeh, but others. Maybe it's time to give a sincere reply and explain why we did what we did. I'll work on it! For now here's another look back in time on the occasion of Mahdiyeh's birthday, Dec 1, 1982. These photos are from a album my mother made from photos I sent her by mail.

Irani & Azaad..........I know you are upset........

by Sasha on

I know you are upset and have suffered a great deal but Souri is not your enemy. It is out of a kind heart that she is concerned for JJ.

The majority of Iranians are looking forward to the day that Iran is free. I am sure that Souri wants the best for all Iranians too.

To Souri

by Irani & Azaad (not verified) on

In Feb. of 1979, I was 12 years old in Tehran when the horrible Islamic invasuion & occupation happened to my beloved IRAN... I was so angry at the stupid people (especially our so called intellectuals) who betrayed our beloved Motherland to bunch of UGLY, Uneducated, uncultured, vicious Islamic fundamentalist & terrorist animals who were installed with the finance & help of the west. As soon as the interim Government of Bazargaan (Khaen) was running the show, I joined the NATIONALIST underground party of "NEGHAB" (Nejat-Ghiame-Bozorge-Iran), responsible for the Nationalistic Uprising of July 10th, 1980 against the Tyrany of Khomeini's regime! I can only tell you that I valounteered to be the perhaps the youngest member of this Party and speacial messanger between the certain cells in Western Tehran... I put my life in danger... After school, sometimes until late at night telling my parents that I was studing at the friend's house...
Accidental arrest, confession & later murder of some our members in summer of 1982, was enough reason for me to leave my beloved parents, sister, friends, family, remaining members of my party & my beloved Motherland alone in less than a week (At age only 14 & alone) through mountains of western Iran and entering Turkey after a serious life & death situations & circumstances... The rest is the History...I haven't been back since 1982!
I did my part for IRAN... What the hell did you & Jahanshah did for IRAN? Let me guess? TREASON...
I have the right to be angry & furious with Jahanshah Javid & his Hezbollahis accomplices...
I am 40 years old now still with broken heart & the fact that our uprising to FREE IRAN was betrayed by double agents & Khaens that are so many in my beloved Motherland... I will be back someday to see Free IRAN and see that no religion is higher that The name of IRAN...Zendeh baad IRAN va IRANI Azaad
A Freedom fighter now in Western United States.

by Another lost iranian in France (not verified) on

Like many around here, I was a kid in '79. I read a lot since then. Some members of my family supported the revolution, and I have to admit that this refrains from getting closer to them today , as an adult. Now I can already here yall ''baba famil et' an''. ok, I'm cool with that, sharing tadeeg and drinking Ahmad tea in front of Mansoor videos is fine, but don't aske me more.

Mr. B. Marefat

p.s : I wonder what does Mrs. Attari from Attari sandwich thinks of all that.

Observer, HOW DOES HE LIVE WITH HIMSELF?????!!!!!! /Souri

by Rosie T. on

What are you doing on this website if you think he should have ANY problem whatsoever living with himself?

WHO CAUSED THE IRANIAN REVOLUTION? Khomeini, Shah, US, France, BBC, Russia, ignorant peasants, deluded intellectuals, Shariati, Rajavi, Tudeh, Lenin, Marx, Mohammed, Ali, EVERYONE CAUSED THE IRANIAN REVOLUTION.

I caused it. I'm an AMERICAN. I lived like a middle class princess and looked the other way while my country raped and terrorized the Third World.  I DID IT.  IT'S MY FAULT.  I'M GUILTY.

WE ALL CAUSED THE IRANIAN REVOLUTION. And all the wars before and since.. 5000 YEARS OF PATRIARCHY EXPLODING IN OUR FACE CAUSED THE IRANIAN REVOLUTION. The question is, what's next. We choose.

I vote for the return of the Mother, of Gaia. She's waiting...

PS Souri, in English we say:  Let he who has no sin cast the first stone.  It comes from Jesus.  Early Christianity represented the triumph of MERCY over JUSTICE.  Robin

Judge, I agree with you... / JJ

by Rosie T. on

Believe me, Judge, I didn't miss the point.  I wasn't happy with JJ's reply AT ALL.  I thought it was IMPLICIT in what I said that he MUST face the music when blame is slung at him instead of WHINING like he did (sorry jj to be so blunt).  I told him he opened the floodgates and now must swim..  I told him he needs to be GREAT: what do you think I meant?  What do you think I missed?

I think part of the problem is that he felt he HAD already apologized, explicitly at times, but implicitly ALWAYS EVERY MOMENT OF HIS LIFE for the past twelve years since he's been publishing this website.  Quite frankly, I think he was just hurt and he over-reacted when he wrote that post. And can you TOTALLY blame him?
You have to remember that this is someone who wanted to publish a PRINT magazine, and instead it became a website, and suddenly, in the past few months, he is at the hub of this planetary hive mind. I can't begin to imagine how unsettling and overwhelming that must be.

You are fair, Fair Judge, you always try to be fair and there is not one single thing I don't totallly agree with you about in your post except this: you forgot to acknowledge that he has spent twelve years apologizing ALWAYS in acts and sometimes in words, And that seems to me to be very unfair of you, because HE GAVE YOU THIS WEBSITE and actions DO speak louder than words.  Just an acknowledgement would've been nice.

So I find that unfair about your post.   As for JJ, he'll have to figure out what was unfair about his...

Best.
Robin

Sasha

I was reading some of the comments on this thread ............

by Sasha on

I was thinking back at what happened to Afghanistan and what is happening to Iraq at this very moment. I also remember clearly what happened after 9/11 and how anyone that looked of Middle Eastern descent where now seen as terrorists simply because of their appearance. How on the television I saw how men of all ages where being separated from their families for questioning by the US government. How because of the Americans fears Bush was able to use it to invade Iraq and how he now wants to invade Iran.

I ask myself why didn't you do anything to stop it? Where were you when you needed to speak up about? You see one can be just as guilty by simply not doing anything whether it be out of fear, ignorance or confusion. I was not there when so many innocent men, women and children were killed in Iran back in 1953 or 1979. I was not born until 1968 and I was but a child in 1979. However, I was an adult when other atrocities occured in the Middle East. Does my lack of  action make me just as guilty as if I had pulled the trigger?

Also, what about the part that the US and other countries played in 1953 and 1979 which caused the death of so many Iranians. For what? Oil There seems to be so much blame to go around. So much manipulation of the masses.

People are still suffering and dying in Iran and what are we all doing about it? Does our lack of  action also make us guilty of their deaths? I do have very good friends in Iran and I worry about them. All I can seem to do is sign petitions and I am doing my best on this website to get people to look beyond the hate, pain, and to think more objectively so that a viable solution can be found for Iran.

I am trying to learn as quickly as possible about anything and everything about Iran in hopes of making a difference. Some how, and some where. I don't want anymore Iranians to have to suffer.

We can not bring back those who have died but we can give meaning to their sacrifice by having all Iranians uniting to set Iran free. Reconciliation  and self accountability is necessary in order for the healing to take place.

There are less people than you think who are attacking Jahanshah. If you look at just the "writings", styles, and all the rest, you will see that although different "names" are being used, but more likely than not, they are from the "same person".
+-
I think that Jahanshah should perhaps consider doing away, or at least modifying, the present system that allows people leave comments "willy nilly". This is "tantamount" to the inmates taking over the "assylum".

Where are you come from? All this hatter??Could I ask all of you "Where were YOU and What were YOU doing at that timë??"
Are you sure you are all so honest to tell the truth and nothing but the truth and the whole truth about that?
At least JJ is honest and couragous to say what he did yesterday and what he thinks today....Are you all better than him? or just as honest as JJ?

JJ spent 10 years of his life assisting the criminal mullahs...

by Partially Guilty (not verified) on

There is no other way to dice it and slice it... Complacency is not a black and white concept!? There are many shades of gray to it. Some revolutionaries were closer to the white side and some were closer to the black side! Many of us were there when the great An_Gholab of 1979 was casted and due to our ignorance we helped the mullahs come to power. But, once the first round of executions took place, we stopped supporting the An-Gholab. It took us less than a year to see the true nature and gravity of the disaster! The question is why did it take 10 years for JJ to turn away from these criminals? More importantly, was it his detest for all the crimes and misery the An_gholab brought upon Iran and Iranians that made him to turn away or was it that he was no longer needed by his masters?

JJ needs to be honest with himself. He needs to search within for the truth and ask for forgiveness.

Most people here seem to be missing the point

by The Fair Judge (not verified) on

Most people here (including JJ and Rosie) seem to be missing the point.
JJ, I am not blaming you for my father's death and I never called you a murderer or a killer. I don't even know you. But you have rightly started a debate on the actions and judgements of those who helped bring about the revolution.
In today's polarised political climate, there needs to be an end to the cycle of violence and a start on the development of respect for human rights in Iran as the basis for a civil and democratic society.
Therefore we need reconciliation.......AND THIS IS THE POINT.
To have the reconciliation work, those responsible will need to own up, express sorrow and apologise.
This will not be for my benefit and if you think that by apologising you will make me feel better, you are 100% MISTAKEN. You cannot undo the past but you can help the future.
In a country like Iran where there has been so much blood shed and human rights violation, reconciliation needs to happen. Otherwise we will get stuck in this cycle of violence and the sense of injustice will not go away.
I am ready to be the first to extend my hand forward, but only under those conditions above.
Otherwise we can just carry on taking taking revenge until hell freezes over.

hypocrites or skewed population

by LP (not verified) on

99% of people voted for IRI back then. Now we have all these people who claim they had nothing to do with the revoltion, and want to blame somebody for it. There can only be two scenarios here:

1. All the people that are writing these comments belong to that 1%
.
2. Or are hypocrites, refusing to take responsibility.

.I tend to believe the latter.

I see since you did not pull the trigger directly then you are completely washing your hands of any responsiblity. You kept the propaganda machines of the IRI moving. Not all Nazis pulled the triggers!

I hope a day comes that you and many like you who worked for the IRI are brought to justice. You were not a simple abdar-bashee.

It sickens me that you get to live in the U.S. while many because of you did not have a chance to live. You should be deported from the U.S. to the IRI for aiding and abidding the prosecution of others. How were you able to move back to the U.S.? Did you file for asylum? Did you disclose you worked for the IRI?

You were attending school in the U.S. and you went back to join the IRI. How many coats do you have in your closet? I suppose das be reshet is pretty good so if you are deported you know the drill.

I'm sorry, but....

by Anonymous342 (not verified) on

I'm sorry but the revolution caused the death of anywhere from 50,000 (executed political prisenors) to over 500,000 (if you include the six years of war that continued purely because of Khomeini).
The people responsible were each and every one of those "well intentioned" idiots who supported the Ayatollahs' rise to power. Yes, it is clear beyond any doubt that you JJ and others had "good intentions", but nevertheless, you contributed to the ultimate death of thousands of innocents.
"The road to ruin is paved by good intentions", as they say, but that does not exonerate the guilty. Never has and never will. If that was the case we should let go of all who commited murders and who are now doing time in prisons, simply becaus they "intended well".
Rosie T., you can now proceed to enlighten us with your tired "mirror" analogies, but if you had lost a loved one to the Ayatollahs, I bet you would not wax so philosophical.

Missing something?

by Rosie T... (not verified) on

Yes, you're missing something> You're missing that in this highly polarized environment everyone is just a mirror for each other, missing pieces and looking to each other for the missing pieces in the mirror, and then afraid of what they see in the mirror. Aand because you are the Wizard of this Website Oz, you are the biggest mirror of all. So it's not personal, it's part of a much larger process of seeking wholeness, individual and collective. cf, Attar's Simorgh, ending of Bezaiee's Mosaferaan. You opened the floodgates, now you must swim. It's a lot for one goldfish, but so what? Somebody has to do it. May as well be you. No one else is in such a powerful position. I was only a kid who fell in love with the idea of revolution and justice AND FREEDOM. I bought Khomeini's idea of Islam (and I don't think I was the ONLY one, as I recall), and I worked for the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) first as a translator and then reporter and editor in the English section. Burn in hell? / To Makes Me Sick... / Grieving

by Rosie T. on

Burn in hell?  Now who sounds like they use beards and chadors?....

Don't you get  the joke?  Laugh about it. It came from you. Look in the mirror...recognize yourself in your supposed "enemies", WEEP about it too.

Too many of you have not fully grieved.  Psychologists recognize that anger is an early step in bereavement but true grieving comes from a far deeper and more essential place.  Until a bereavement, adeath,  fs fully grieved,  the living cannot return to life and time remains frozen in the past, which is death.

Burn in hell? Now really....laugh, weep.  forgive, move on...And remember:

ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO  DESIRES A TRUE PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY FOR IRAN, NOW, TODAY, IN THIS LIVING YEAR, 2007,  IS ON THE SAME SIDE.
