by Monda on Mon Aug 16, 2010 01:04 PM PDTi hardly pay attention to numbers (except for minutes spent on a favorite project). one explanation may be, folks are easier attracted to color than to black & white.
Thank you for your questions! Yes, it was I believe the first coed Public school in Tehran. And the red ski jacket was still on me because the room they had chosen for the shoot was freezing cold at 8 am on a fall day. They called our names, first thing in the morning, handed us some of our artwork, then asked to look happy. as noticed, i had a hard time complying with the last piece.
Monda jaan I meant ur own pic in your own photo essay, see
by Anonymouse on Mon Aug 16, 2010 10:19 AM PDTSee this photo has much more hits than the next pic. Usually the number of hits on one pic is close to the other pics. I didn't mean it as the "most watched" section.
Anyway, couple more questions, was that a co-ed school and is that an orange rain coat over your school uniform? Seems like too much clothing ;-) Looks good though!

Anonymous jaan, thank you for your observation and care

didani aziz,
by Monda on Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:37 PM PDTSo good to see you here. I never met Khanom Parsa's daughter, I wish I had. MAryam and I used to sit in art classes (zang naghashi) in 7th and 8th grades, enjoying our mutual admiration not only in arts. But Maryam did somewhat introduce me to Pop art.
I don't have any of my old artwork, they were all gone by the time I went home after 7 years! I mourned over their loss for a long time (read my reply to Anahid, below, if you like). Even most of my oil paintings and charcoal sketches, which I had done in Aghaye Javadipour's studio, were lost in our move here. I didn't cry over those much, because I learned lots of technique with him and could reproduce them if I wanted to. I only have a few charcol nudes and still lives in my closet, if you like I'll send them to you. They go great in your bathroom :o)
Ey dad-e bidad, aghab oftadam!
by sima on Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:28 PM PDTMy strongest memory of Keyhan Bacheha is from our long stays at the Caspian when during humid mosquito-infested evenings we would pile up in the car to go to Noshahr and pick up supplies. Keyhan Bacheha did not make it to Noshahr on any reliable schedule. While my mother was shopping for stuff I would run from store to store looking for Keyhan Bacheha. It was a matter of luck. When I would find one it was heart-pounding heaven clutching it in the backseat of the car, saqqing hot noon barbari and waiting to get home. Too dark to read in the car and the flash of street lights (not too many anyway) just illuminated the cover for a split second it took to make my heart miss a bit. If my mom had splurged and treated us to a can of shir-asali (remember that?) it was sucking the sticky awfully sweet goo at home and leafing Kehyan Bacheha in absolute bliss.
And the rest of you -- me and Didani excepted -- can be jealous that we knew Monda almost from the days she was on the cover.
Didani joon, I used to sneak and read Zanerooz too whenever I could. It was also forbidden in our household. I have a great memory of the day I understood why my mother hated it so much. I'll tell some other time!

by Ari Siletz on Thu Aug 12, 2010 09:35 PM PDTYes, the description was directed at Kayhan on kooche shahid shaah cheraaghi, Tehran, not Kahyan on King street, London.
Now I know where your daughter's talent is coming from!
by didani on Thu Aug 12, 2010 08:53 PM PDTI remember Khanoom Parsa's daughter (when we were at eighth grade, she was at seventh) brought cubism to Reza Shah Kabir’s naghashi classes. It became very popular since she got a 20 but no one else could match her grade! I know we used to get Keyhan Bacheha but for some reason don’t have much detailed memory of it except for the pictures of shagerd avalha and the crossword puzzle section (which my sister and I were fighting who could solve). However, I remember zane rooz very well and I was a big fan (don’t tell Maryam though, it will hurt my image). The painting is great, do you still have it? How about the other one that you wished was in the picture? Can you post the pictures if you have them?
Kayhan
by benross on Thu Aug 12, 2010 08:46 PM PDTOf course these days all Kayhan publications are kayhaan bacheh haa. As for their cover photos, cubist mirror images of Orangutans.
I should note that the real thing survived abroad.
Thanks Ari! :o)
by Monda on Thu Aug 12, 2010 08:02 PM PDTComing from you, the uber-artist/ art connoisseur, I guess that fellow did choose the proper piece for the cover. khiyalam raahat shod.
khalabaan beebaak rings a bell, can't quite recall which though! I wasn't much of a Disney fan before Jungle Book, so I used to ignore Donald everywhere.
KB came out on Sundays, in our neighborhood. Nazy said she used to reach it on Saturday afternoons. (Partish koloft bood)
I used to wonder too, Maziar
by Monda on Thu Aug 12, 2010 07:55 PM PDTthen at some point there were so many people I wondered about that I lost the passion, it was just exhausting! Glad you enjoyed this.
In good hands with photographer
by Ari Siletz on Thu Aug 12, 2010 07:49 PM PDTThe drawing is a cubist mirror image, both in color scheme and line flow, to the person drawing the picture--though the person drawing the picture is much cuter ;)
From the cover design I'm guessing that the Kayhan Bacheh haa I used to read was older vintage. I liked the khalabaan e beebak comic stirp and the color Disney Donald Duck action on the back. What days did it come out, Thursdays?
Of course these days all Kayhan publications are kayhaan bacheh haa. As for their cover photos, cubist mirror images of Orangutans.
Thanks for the nostalgia (and a wonderful drawing), Monda

divaneh, Regretfully...
by Monda on Thu Aug 12, 2010 07:28 PM PDTI did not have access to Payk or Dokhtaran-Pesaran. I did read a few copies of Daneshmand at my cousins' and loved it. Post-KB, yalali talali was forbidden in our household. Too bad, really.
Yes, those magazine sellers where some of the favorite visitors in any neighborhood, despite their awful sounding motorbikes. Routinely, they were the carriers of happiness.

by divaneh on Thu Aug 12, 2010 06:05 PM PDTYou brought all the memories back with your blog and the image of Keyhan Bacheha. We also had a visiting newspaper seller who used to appear once a week and from Zane rooz to Javanan to Keyhan Bacheha were supplied to kids and grownups at different ages. I had so much joy with my KB but I am surprised that nobody has so far mentioned Peyk. That was my other favourite and when it was distributed in the school I could not wait to get home and read it.
Later I find KB childish and moved to Dokhtaran-Pasaran which was for teens. I had to naturally move to Javanan after that, but I never did and became a fan of Daneshmand.

by Monda on Thu Aug 12, 2010 10:23 AM PDTI went to the kharazmi in yousef abad. Here's the story: I was at the Zoroastrian elementary school "Guive", until one day in 4th grade, khanom Safavi slapped my good friend really hard on her face for not having properly memorized a Saadi poem... haalam bad shod, it was not khanom Safavi's first time physically punishing her students (not me, man baceh dars khoon boodam) so I went home in tears and reported to baba about that cruel event. Baba immediately phoned khanom Parsa (vazir aamoozesh parvaresh), and my transfer midyear was arranged, the very next day. Consequently, khanom Safavi was soon transferred to a school in Jonoob shahr (meydan Ark) and the principal of school (khanom kahnamooyi) went under tobeekh and soon after was demoted to teaching first grade, also at some remote school.
I was not allowed to read Banovan or Zanerooz until I was in 9th grade (akhlaagham kharaab mishod :o) zanerooz published some of my drawings in their teen pages. dasstanhaaye donbaaleh daar khaili khoob boodan, nah? I'm glad you enjoyed my blog aziz. to va khaharet systemetoon kheili dorost bood.
