Moral advice from a criminal

Moral advice from a criminal
by Rostam Pourzal
09-Jun-2008

I was shocked when I read that George Bush advised the graduates at a college the other day to "act responsibly" in their adult life. He told of his dream for a "culture of responsibility" to spread in America so people stay away from too much drinking, sex, and drugs. This immediately reminded me of that proverbial Iranian story about an elementary school teacher who had trouble pronouncing some sounds. When he tried to teach the first letter of the alphabet, his students heard "anef" instead of the correct version, "alef." Naturally, they mispronounced, too. So he got impatient and yelled "when I say anef, don't say anef, say anef" not realizing that the kids were copying him faithfully.

So how should those clueless new graduates behave as they step out into the real world after George Bush's sermon? They do need guidance, but guidance from what sort of leader? As a parent of a new graduate, it matters to me who tries to influence our young. Should they do as Bush tells them or act like he does? Should they, too, "act responsibly" and terrorize innocent civilians on the other side of the world and lie about it?

After all, this jihadist is in the spotlight every day as the president of the planet's sole superpower. So we should want to be like him, right? Should the new graduates rob the poor to give (tax breaks) to their corrupt, rich friend, as Bush does proudly in the neme of freedom? That's "responsible", isn't it? Should they spend all the money they can possibly borrow on insane, failed ideas but tell the rest of us to exercise fiscal restraint rather than declare banruptcy? Should our graduates totally screw up the first project that's entrusted to them and leave the mess to their successors? Should they, like holy George, expect only others to sacrifice for the common good?

The twenty-something generation must be confused as hell, especially when the topic is something as awesome as "r-e-s-p-o-n-s-i-b-i-l-i-t-y" and the person advising is the Leader of the Free World! Many must be wondering whether drinking too much is more irresponsible or the mass murder of over one million Iraqis? Good question, especially when you consider that the Americans most likely to die in Iraq or come home paralyzed don't get to hear the President at graduation. They're in the military because they can't afford college in the richest country on earth.

But really, what should we tell our sons and daughters as they embark on their careers? That it's irresponsible to sleep around, but not reckless if you let hundreds of thousands of hurricane victims to fend for themselves in New Orleans while you're fundraising for the Republicans in California? Should we, too, pretend it's virtuous to let your greedy political allies rob tens of thousands of shareholders and employees, as Bush did with Enron Corporation?

Probably no one understands the confusion George Bush's campus audience experienced the other day better than US-backed Middle East tyrants. One day, the CIA sends them "terror suspects" to interrogate with torture; the next day George Bush shows up lecturing them on virtues of human rights! They, of course, know it's all a game. But what about America's youth? Are most of them mature enough to see vulgarity in high places behind the fig leaf?

Mammad- One more thing

by Asghar Taragheh on

I read your cute analysis below for Bush lovers. Basically, you are blaming the US for everything again. You know, many of us were not born yesterday. Many of the US policies today (and results on the ground as you blame them on Bush) are direct result of leftover policies of previous US administrations during the cold war in direct competition with your Russian masters.
There are two sides to every story. You just have decided which side you are on and which side you will always blame. If you were an honest analyzer, you would admit that the soviets are to blame for many of the issues today as they also supported many of the dictatorial regimes in the middles east (Iraq, Syria, the PLO, Egypt, Yemen........).......

So, its not as simple as you try to make it sound.

Very cute :)

Bush Lovers: His Middle East legacy

by Mammad on

In addition to all the previous postings, here is the rest of Bush's legacy in the Middle East:

(i) When Bush was elected the president, the price of oil was about $35/barrel. Today it is close to $140.

(ii) When 9/11 terrorist attacks happened, there was snmpathy for the US in the Islamic world everwhere. Today, the US is despised.

(iii) When Bush was elected, the US and Iran had a chance for reconcilliation, after Madeleine Albright's speech. Today, there is no chance, not at least until he leaves office, if he does not order an attack on Iran.

(iv) When Bush was elected, due to Iran's internal developments (only 7 months before his electection, Iran's reformists had taken the control of the parliament), Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Jordan were moving towards cautious reform. They have stopped that now.

(v) Due to Bush's support, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, and UAE are still run by corrupt, dictatorial governments. They are supported by Bush as "moderate governments," even though they produce more terrorists than any other country.

Yes, Bush lovers: Next time when you praise him, hoping that he would attack Iran, just remember his Middle East legacy: Chaos, bloodshed, destruction, and instability in the Middle East, the most strategic area in the world.

Bush Lovers: His Palestine/Israel legacy

by Mammad on

No US president has supported Israel so blindly.

(i) He is the 1st US president that actually recognized Israel policy of settlements in the West Bank, giving Israel a letter committing the US to such settlements.

(ii) He has not moved a finger to prevent Israel's innumerable atriocities against the defenseless Palestinians.

(iii) He pushed for democratic elections among Palestinians. Radicals wanted it too! What happened?

Alas! Darn! Hamas won! They got the pularity of the votes and absolute majority in the parliament.

(iv) But, wait a minute, Bush and Condi Rice said: True, we wanted elections, but you guys voted for the wrong side! Our "directed democracy project" was defeated once again. So, let's punish the Palestinians for not electing our stooges!

(v) So, what happened? With Bush's support, Israel "evacuated" Gaza Strip, but created the largest jail on Earth: Gaza's land, sea, and air borders are all controlled by Israel. Israel attacks at will, and when it kills innocents, what does Bush say? "Israel must defend itself" against children, old men, and women.

(vi) Due to Bush's policy, Hamas routed the Fatah forces in Gaza and is now in full control. Here is  to you, Iran's radicals!!

(vii) In his recent speech before the Kenesset, Israel's parliament, he promised the Palestinians that they will have a state of their own "over the next 60 years!' Some promise.

The Legacy? Peace between Israel and Palestinians is more fat fetched than ever.

Bush Lovers: His Iran Legacy

by Mammad on

During Bush's presidency:

(i) Iran has made far more progress in its nuclear enrichment program than the past 30 years combined.

(ii) Due to what has been happening in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and Lebanon, Iran's radicals are in the driving seat.

(iii) Due to Bush's idiotic policy, the reformists have been suppressed. The President goes to the Middle East a few months before Iran's elections and declares his supports for the reformists, giving them a kiss of death. The elections were going to be bad enough, he made them much worse.

If Bush does not attack Iran, which is possible but not probable, his legacy will be: An Iran on the verge of having the complete capacity and technology to make a nuclear bomb, should a national security emergency arises.

Mammad

Bush lovers: His Lebanon legacy

by Mammad on

After Rafik Hariri's assassination, presumably by Syria, Bush and the West pushed for democratic elections in Lebanon. Of course, the most democratic action in Lebanon would be taking a new poll - none has been taken since 1943 - to see which religious sect. is in the majority. Everyone knows it is the Shi'ite, but never mind.

The elections were held. SURPRISE! Not only did Hezbollah receive a significant fraction of the votes and sent 14 representative to the parliament, it also joined the government of Siniora, the PM. Condi Rice's "directed democracy" was a failure!

But Bush and company did not quit. They constantly provoked Siniora and his allies against Hezbollah and its allies, such as Michel Aoun, the Maronite ex-General. The result: Complete paralysis of the government.

This was, of course, just fine with Israel, because while the Arab world was fixated on Lebanon, Israel continued its crimes against Palestinians.

Then, came the summer 2006 war. Hezbollah began the war. It should not have, should have been condemned by the world, and it was. But, Hezbollah had done several such small operations in the past, and each time there was a quick ceasefire.

Not this time. With strong support by Cheney and company, Israel started a full scale war. Meanwhile, the US prevented the United Nations Security Council from reaching any consensus, and was buying time for Israel. Condi Rice was promising a "new Middle East," one in which Hezbollah is defeated, and then Iran is attacked.

Alas! Darn! Hezbollah won! Read the three articles of Jonathan Cook, a journalist living in Israel, to understand the depth of Israel's defeat. The Pentagon hurried to revise its plans for attacks on Iran. General Abizaid, then the Centcom. commander, said, "May be Iranians were showing us what we may expect if we attack them."

The result: a destroyed Lebanon. For the first time, the number of fighters killed on both sides were roughly the same; about 140 from each side, in addition to 1000 civilians Lebanese. But, Hezbollah remained intact, with its popularity vast in the Arab world. This was the 2nd time Hezbollah won a war with Israel. The 1st time was in 2000, when, after fighting with Israel for 15 years, Hezbollah forced Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon that it had occupied since 1982. Israel lost 600 soldiers over that period, a huge number for a country of a few million.

But, Bush and company continued their provocation. They provoked Siniora to sack the security chief of Beirut's airport, allegedly a Hezbollah, and shot down Hezbollah's optical communication network that had played a crucial role in its victory over Israel.

The Result: Hezbollah swiftly took over West Beirut, and routed forces loyal to Siniora. It demanded, (i) restoration of its communication network; (ii) putting the security chief back in his job, and (iii) veto power over all the government's decisions. Siniora had taken those actions thinking that Bush will rush aid to him. The aid never came. Bush blinked. France Blinked. Siniora blinked.

The Result: Hezbollag got all of its demands and more. Michel Suleiman, the General with whom Hezbollah has good relations, is now the president. Hezbollah is more powerful than ever.

Thus, an organization that the US has labeled terrorist, has won impressive strategic victories over the US and Israel during the Bush presidency. This is his Lebanon legacy.

Bush lovers: His Pakistan legacy

by Mammad on

Since 9/11 the US has given Pakistan $11 billion in aid, in addition to forgiving its previous debts. 85% of this aid - $9.4 billion - has gone to the military to supposedly fight the terrorists. What has happened?

(i) Almost all of aid has been used by General Musharraf to buy advanced weapons and put them at Pakistan/India border, one of the most unstable areas in the world, with two nuclear nations lining up against each other.

(ii) Musharrah has, in fact, made peace with Taliban and their sympathizers in western and northern Pakistan provinces, which means that Al Qaeda also has places to train terrorists.

(iii) Musharraf has violated, with US backing or at least silence, Pakistan Constitution. For example, he sacked Pakistan's Supreme Court judges, and the new ones had to swear to loyalty TO HIM NOT PAKISTAN's Constitution. The Us did not move a finger.

(iv) Bush and company sent Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan to give a civilian face to the military dictatorship, without even making sure that she is secured. She was murdered.

Pakistan, a nuclear nation with a large number of radicals in the Interservices Intelligence (the notorious ISI), Pakistan's military intelligence, is totally unstable.

Mammad

Bush lovers: His Afghanistan legacy

by Mammad on

After 9/11 terrorist attacks, there was an ocean of good will towards the US, and great support for destrying Al Qaeda. See what happened.

Afghanistan was attacked, even though the US knew full well that the leadership of Al-Qaeda had already left, and even though Donald Rumsfeld had said, "Afghanistan is not large enough for good bombing, as a show of force."

Taliban were overthrown. This was done with Iran's great help (check the internet for accuracy). The National Unity Government, led by Hamid Karzai (the former lobbyist for Union Oil of California with Taliban), could not have come to power without Iran's indispensible help (check the internet for accuracy). Where is Afghsanistan now?

(i) Taliban are resurgent.

(ii) Opium production that had been banned under Taliban is thriving.

(iii) Al Qaeda structure and leadership are intact.

(iv) The government is hardly controlling even the Capital, Kabul.

(v) Practically everyday innocent civilians are killed by NATO bombing.

(vi) There is strong backlash against NATO.

(vii) Afghnistan, that was supposed to be a model of democracy, is a model as a basket country, needing international help to barely survive. It will not be a viable state for decades, if ever.

Do not forget the US help in creating the Afghan Mojahedin, who later on became Al Qaeda. Do not also forget Pakistan's help - the US "special non-NATO ally" - in creating Taliban.

Bush lovers: His Iraq legacy

by Mammad on

To all Bush lovers:

In this and the next few posts I describe the legacy that Bush is leaving behind in January 2009, as far as his Middle East policy is concerned. In this one, I briefly talk about Iraq. I'll publish the entire thing in an article in the next two weeks. First Iraq:

After

(i) illegally invading Iraq (illegal, because it had no United Nation's backing);

(ii) destrying the infrastructure of one of the most advanced Arab nations, turning Iraq into a beggar nation;

(iii) allowing the looting of Iraq's cultural and historical heritage;

(iv) creating 4.5 million refugees, 2 miilions of whom have left the country (who are obviously either affluent, or professional, which means irreplaceable);

(v) causing the death of at least 1 million (probably many more) civilians;

(vi) creating hundreds of thousands of orphans, widows and widowers;

(vii) causing stress and anxieties in 70% of Iraqi children which will be with them for  the rest of their lives, and

(viii) torturing Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere,

the following is a partial list of what the Bush-Cheney team is demanding from Iraq in secret "negotiations":

(i) 58 military bases;

(ii) control of Iraq's airspace below 32000 ft

(iii) authority to kill anyone deemed "hostile" without Iraq's permission;

(iv) authority to stage a war against terrorists anywhere from Iraq without Iraq's permission, and

(v) full immunity from presecution in Iraq for the US military and civilian contractors.

This last one is Capitulation, the same Capitulation that sparked the 15 Khordad 1342 (June 5, 1963) uprising in Iran. As Ayatollah Khomeini said at that time: Capitulation means if we kill the Americans' dogs, we will be jailed, but if they kill us, our wives, our husbands, our children, or destroy our homes, they won't be.

The Bush-Cheney team are threatening Iraq with $50 billion in Iraqi assets; they won't get it if they do not agree to this "agreement."

This is the meaning of liberation for Iraq, and return of its sovereignty!

The most amazing thing about

by Farhad Kashani (not verified) on

The most amazing thing about these Islamic Marxists and IRI apologists is this: when it comes to the U.S, these people are suddenly caring about the lives of Iranian citizens in Iran, where as, they have been astonishingly silent and in many times supporting and apologizing for the brutal massacre, killing, imprisonment, torture and exile, of millions of Iranians by this regime in the last 30 years. Not even once these “un-true-Iranians” ever talked about a single execution, a single false imprisonment, a single newspaper closure, a single girl getting beat up in the street and taken to prison because her scarf was too revealing, a single Iranian walking through mountains of Turkey and Yugoslavia to run away from this regime to asylum, a single student beaten up and thrown from top of building because he wanted democracy, a single application of medieval and barbaric Islamic law in Iran, a single torture of hundreds of thousands of political prisoners, a single time where Iranian money was gone to support Islamic fascist groups around the world, and now they suddenly care about Iranian life! Now that the clash of civilization started by Khomeini between Iran and rest of the world, specially the West, has reached its climax because of the fascist tactics used by the IRI, and now that the U.S and rest of the world, have woken up and feel the need to defend themselves against the fascist regime, these people are suddenly talk about caring for Iranian lives! By them hijacking the Iranian exile voice, (although they are a tiny minority), the people in Iran felt like we don’t have their back, and that’s why they were and still are frustrated of not getting support, and that give the IRI more ability to even massacre them more brutally and savagely. But things have changed and are changing rapidly. The silent majority has awakened and are speaking up and those IRI supporters’ domination on Iranian exile voice is vanishing rapidly. The U.S hasn’t even waged a war on Iran yet (And even if it did, and I hope it never happens, undoubtedly, it’s because of the fascist nature and absolute fault of the IRI), and these people are already talk as it already happened! Just another way to comfort themselves by blindly hating rest of the world and anyone who criticizes the IRI, specially, the U.S. To them, the destruction of Iran and lost of Iranian life is OK as long as its done in the name of blind anti Americanism. Their hate and enviousness of the U.S has gone way beyond anything we’ve ever seen.

Bogus Love!

by Pissed Off (not verified) on

But they don't have to give any names, do they? It's like IRI authorities telling Iranians about the imminent attack by "enemies of Islam" for the last thirty years.

Misinformation is one very conspicuous stratagem IRI authorities have used to dupe Iranians. as their lies are exposed and they become discredited, they resort to more atrocious acts of brutality against the people of Iran and at the same time seek war with another country.

Regime's meddling in Iraq's internal affairs is not new and its ambitions go beyond Iraq. Europeans, the Arab world and Americans know that and are keeping the regime at bay through appropriate economic sanctions which only affect the bank accounts of IRI criminals.

The moral high grounds from which these individuals attack "Iran's enemies" and "non-Iranians" on iranian.com are as bogus as their advertised "love" for Iran.

The moral and ethical answer

by Anonymous-3000 (not verified) on

is that they are both criminals, the Bush and his clique of right-wing neo-conservatives and their right-wing Zionist allies for starting illegal wars, acting as agents of transnationals, and undermining international rule of law and their own republic; and the rulers of the Islamic Republic for ignoring the will of their own people and subjecting their people and their country to political violence. The likes of Fred and Zion who always try to muddy the water whenever anyone tries to show the contradiction and criminality of their buddy Bush and the state of Israel; and Q and others on the left who are blinded by anti-imperialism and legitimate fears of a criminally insane invasion of Iran that they tend to whitewash the IRIs crimes. The moral and ethical act is to sympathize with the victims and oppose the oppressors wherever they are. I for one am tired of the two-camp mentality left over of the Cold War that is adopted by both sides.

Dear Mr. Pourzal:

Thank you for writing this excellent article.

I totally agree with you, the Bush Administration and their neocon friends have taken this country down the drain.

Fortunately, there seems to be a generation which is waking up from the deep slumber with all of the brainwashing that the media and this Administration is feeding them on a daily basis.

Our hope lies on the future generation to take this nation back to what it once stood for, the beacon of hope for all people across our planet. We must do everything in our power to educate our youth, take them out of this bubble and show them what the political elite are doing under their name.

The only civilized way of resolving conflicts is through diplomacy and dialogue, and respecting the rights of other countries. The US should understand that the era of gun-boat diplomacy and warfare is over and they cannot turn this planet into a living hell.

American youth is doing much better than the previous generations and despite the garbage that they are fed through the media and everything that is accessible to them day in and day out, they have shown that they want to be a part of the political scene and make changes to it. That is a great achievement for kids who are kept away from the world and raised in the obliviance bubble.

Unfortunately, just like there are a number of Iranian youth that are also kept in the dark about the bitter realities of their government and everyday life, not all American kids are open to the truth and actually swallow the nonsense that is fed to them under the patriotic slogans. How else would they find volunteers to go fight an illegal war...

As you can see in the comments here, some not-so-young Iranians are opposing CASMII and NIAC and are advocating for military attacks against Iran. You can't expect everyone to be reasonable, logical or capable of distinguishing between truth and BS. American and Iranian youth are not exempt.
