Vote Malihe! Vote Hillary!

Dear 9th Congressional District voters,

I am running for the only female delegate from the 9th Congressional District (Congresswoman Barbara Lee's district in Berkeley, Piedmont, Albany, Oakland and Castro Valley in northern California) to go to the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August. As you may know, our District has been awarded 2 delegates (1 male, 1 female) and 1 alternate (female) to Senator Clinton. I am an Iranian-American who came to the Bay Area from Iran (via England and then Spain) in 1982.

I was a businesswoman for 20 years and have worked hard to help immigrant communities by volunteering at Catholic Charities, American Civil Liberties Union's Immigrant Rights Project, Workers’ Rights Clinic, and Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights as a Persian & Spanish interpreter.

After graduating from UC Berkeley, with high honors, I received my paralegal certificate from SFSU and became an immigration paralegal in order to help immigrant communities more directly. I have deep relationships with the Persian, Latino and LGBT communities among many other bay area communities.

I am not a politician, but I have decided to run for this seat as I realize that while Iranian-Americans have been successful in academia and in business, they have not focused on politics. I seek to fill this gap and work towards giving a voice to the Iranian community in the Bay Area.

As a loyal supporter of Senator Clinton, who has traveled to campaign for her
in Nevada, Texas and soon in Pennsylvania, and helped to raise campaign money, I have been a dedicated volunteer in the coordinated effort to elect a Democrat to the White House.

If you're a registered Democrat living in Congresswoman Barbara Lee
congressional district (Berkeley, Piedmont, Albany, Oakland, Castro
Valley), Please invite your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers!
Not a registered Democrat? No problem - caucus attendees can register
at the caucus!

You are not required to stay for the entire caucus! Registration opens
at 2pm and the caucus begins at 3pm. So, you can sign in at 2pm, cast
your vote for Malihe and then leave.

Thanks for helping to send me to Denver to reflect our local
Democratic Party's commitment to diversity and promote visibility for
Iranians!

You said you won't support our nominee if it's Obama

by Hesiod (not verified) on

So any loyal Democrat who votes for you to respresent this District at the Democratic national convention ought to have their heads examined.

It is fine and appropriate that you support Hillary on the first ballot.

But refusing to support our nominee if it is not Hillary should autimatically disqualify you from being a DNC delagate.

Results of 9th Congressional District delegate election

by Mali on

Dear all,

Yesterday was the caucus day for 9th CD delegate election and Ms. Jean Quan, Councilwoman from 4th Oakland District won that seat. This was an exciting and fun day for many attendees and delegates, including myself. A great number of Asian voters showed up (mainly from Ms. Quan's church and Oakland Chinatown) to cast their vote for her.  Despite not winning the delegate seat, I still believe that I won, as I have learned from my opponent valuable political lessons. Ms. Quan is an experienced, old time politician who has deep roots in her community and capitalizes on the fact that Oakland's population of 415,492, is 3.6% Asian. By running for this seat, I have gained much needed political experience that is only possible to gain by doing it. I am pleased with the results and number of my supporters that showed up. I can't wait to put my experience to work!  Next stop for me personally will be to run for Democratic Central Committee in 2010. Also, I will be in Philadelphia next week, helping Senator Clinton win with a wider margin than expected.

Speaking of Senator Clinton, I respectfully disagree with some of the postings on the blog. I must agree that Senator Clinton is not a perfect candidate.  I believe the only perfect candidate that agrees with me 100% is myself but I am not running to become the US president, so I settle for Senator Clinton, the 2nd best!

I wish you all a great Spring and remind you of what Gandhi had said to his very impassioned grandson, "anger is like electricity; it can burn and it can illuminate," I hope we use our anger to illuminate more justice i the world in small and big ways. Everyday, i try to focus on small ways while making progress towards big ways.

Clinton's immaturity for

by Jahanshah Rashidian on

Clinton's immaturity for such a post seems more and more evident. This is mainly marked by her personal attacks on Obama. People now caution that in her campaign, she sells issues which have been used by other candidates in the past; issues which are forgotten once the race is finished.

Contrary to some right positions, Obama’s foreign policy, plan against terrorism, is more efficent for the victims of Islamism. I see an Obama's presidency with some cautious changes in the face of U.S politics which is now negatively perceived
by the international community.

His emphasis on negociation with the IRI is not acceptable for most Iranians, but is compensated by his empasise on promised policy against terrorism. We, Iranians, need a change of era which rejets any extremism, including the IRI's regime.

World opinion of the US has fallen since September 11. According to
the Pew Global Attitudes Survey, 80 percent of citizens of
predominantly Muslim countries have solidly negative views of the
United States. This is also a chance for Islamism to grow in the Islamic societies.

Is Clinton for guns?

by rustin (not verified) on

Hi Maleeheh,

Have you heard how Clinton is no bashing Obama over guns and how she even shot a duck!???????

She is now victimizing ducks, the most
versitle creatures, they sing, fly, walk, swim and go underwater, just to get some white trash votes! If Hillary has no mercy on ducks will she on us?

Maleeheh, do you own a gun? Is Hillary being honest? How can you support her? What democratic principle does she really believe in?

Everything you wrote was very well judged except the last part about a persons surroundings.
Even Moses and Jesus had people around them that were not perfect. A comedian said about Obama: If you dig a man's record and all the bad you find on him is what his pasture said, then he is very, very good. Never mind all the good this pastor has done to his community. Beside I say, how can you blame the man for speaking the truth? Whites are offended when they are reminded of their wrong doings perhaps because it may prevent them from doing more. Do I need to mention other presidents and white pastors wrong doings and hate speeches who are so popular?
But it would be interesting to see Obama in office and see if he can stand the pressure from neocons and Zionists and serve the people.

Again, I wish you the best

by Anonymous (not verified) on

Again, I wish you the best of luck. I see a lot of our ham-vatans are supporting Obama. Fortunately, domestically, this is a democratic country and each of us is entitled to our opinion. While as an Iranian I can’t deny the Imperialist maneuver of USA around the world, on the other hand I can not also deny -- this is a land of opportunities for people who try hard and take advantage of opportunities to excel in their life... The internal system of this country is trying to make up for whatever suffering that has been brought to black community-- that is why we see a young black American has given the opportunity to move up to the highest later of social/political status. No doubt, he has been working hard to take advantage of the opportunity which was given to him.

Basically I believe there isn't that much difference between Hillary and Obama in political/economical views, and just for following reason I prefer to vote for Hillary. I believe in this -- if we want to know the character of a man we just need to look at those he surrounds himself, and the kind of judgment he is making... Honestly I can’t let aside the hateful character of Obama’s spiritual adviser /mentor/ pastor Rev. Wright who has had close association with Obama for past 20 years... I can’t disregard Obama’s poor judgment in nurturing his kids mentally by taking them to that church to listen to the vulgarity of the language of his pastor. There’s enough hate in the world without hearing it from that pastor. We need positive role models and positive messages to strengthen, not weaken, ourselves and our children...

I did NOT compare you to Khomeini, I was reffering to this sentence of yours:

"Let's not post things that we would not say in person"

What does that suppose to mean? self censorship or we should be afraid to say things in person? in either case we have no business of being here in US! we could stay home and censor ourselves or ghoort daadanding our opinions in dismay.

That's it for me, good luck my dear.

P.S. Obama all the way.

Sorry, you picked the wrong candidate .

by David ET on

Whether your choice of Hillary is only because she is a woman or because of a a Nostalgic fake dream, she is the wrong choice . Not to mention she is dishonest, without principals and with many other selfish flaws.

In good conscious I can not help to support her.

Maliheh jaan, I can't

by hasan Nasehi (not verified) on

Maliheh jaan, I can't believe that you are supporting someone who said the option of war with Iran should considered.
You are not a good representative for Iranian-Americans from this community.
You either don't know Hillary's position very well, or if you do, you are not a good activist.
It is so naive when someone votes for a candidate because she is a woman.
Madeleine Albright, Margaret Tucher, Condolisa rice, Golden Mayer...... are all a good example of a very right wing politicians.
In politic it doesn't matter if they are male or female.
I am proud of Iranian community that majority saying they vote for Obama and they are familiar with Hilary's position.

Mali

Dear Majid, Please read before expressing your opinion

by Mali on

Hope you are well. Please read the article, where I explained what I was doing first, before expressing your opinion. Perhaps you formed an opinion not based on the article, but rather the picture that was in it.

First, I am not running for an office, rather I am running to be elected as a delegate to cast the vote for Senator Clinton (1 of the 2 that she won in our 9th Congressional District);

Second, you lose credibility by comparing me with Khomeini. Give me a break, I am running for a seat in a convention, not to run the US!

Third, one can be polite and exercise his/her US Constitutional right of freedom of speech; they are not mutually exclusive.

Fourth, I am willing to bet that you are a very nice person and would not say some of things that you have said if you met me in person.

Fifth, the poetry is a great way of relaxing.  See, we agreed on something!!

by peace_now (not verified) on

Dear Maliheh,

Does this "caucusing" mean you can vote for either Obama or Clinton? Or do you have to be locked in on one candidate? If the former, please please vote for Obama. Think about it this way: Even from a femenist perspective, is she running as Hillary Rodham or as Hillary Clinton? Therefore a vote for her is not necessarily a vote for women cause, some even call this Bill Clintons third term!!!!

Wish you the best whatever you choose!

NO THANK YOU!

by Maya (not verified) on

Dear Maliheh, most people I know and I, would never vote for Hillary because she is only a few steps behind republicans in manipulating American people with lies, corporate politics as usual, teaming up with insiders such as senator Lieberman and Mccain in foreign policies, calling it "experience". An experience full of lies, failures and controversies. But I would not vote for her most of all because of who she is… a lying, condescending, unethical, desperate and power-hungry candidate who obviously will stop at nothing to win. People have had enough of Bush/Rove tactics my dear. I can't even watch her acting on TV anymore. So, NO THANK YOU!

By the way, have you asked her about her position on gay rights/marriage issue or are you waiting for her to sell it out to win over McCain at the end of elections as usual?

I'll hold my nose and vote Obama.

by Anooshirvan (not verified) on

Thanks for the invitation to vote Hillary, but every time I listen to Hillary speak, I am more convinced I'll vote for Obama. In this country you vote for the lesser of all bad choices and, at this time, it's Obama that fill that spot for me. I won't vote McCain to be a dog catcher. It's that simple, girl friend.

by Malihe Kigasari (not verified) on

Dear all,
Thank you for all your kind (and not so kind) postings. As you may know, the caucusing will be to elect delegates that Senator Clinton has already won; 2 delegates from our 9th Congressional District. Senator Obama's delegates will be caucusing elsewhere.
I realize that many of us have been impassioned about this historic presidential election, but let us not post things that we would not say in person. Let us respect views that are different than ours.
Warm regards,
Malihe

9th CD delegate election

by Malihe (not verified) on

Dear All,
Thank you for all your kind (and not so kind) posts. The caucusing this Sunday at Mills College Gym is merely to elect delegates to go to the Democratic Convention in Denver to cast the delegate vote already won by Senator Clinton. Senator Obama's delegates will be caucusing elsewhere.
I understand that we are all impassioned by this election, but let's not post things that we would not say in person. We accomplish nothing by lack of respect for view points different than ours.
Warm regards,
Mali

I think it's time to give

by Kamran1985 (not verified) on

I think it's time to give someone liberal a chance to run this country. Hillary Clinton is a nothing but a right-wing "Lieberman democrat" with foreign policy equivalent to that of John McCain.

Regardless, any rational person can see that she has almost 0 chance of winning the nomination. At this point, fighting for Hillary is merely fighting for McCain--which seems logical seeing how Hillary and McCain are basically the same thing when it comes to policy(both very "center leaning").

Obama '08, YES WE CAN!

There is no difference

by Dreamer (not verified) on

(not a whole lot) of difference between Hillary and Obama as far as politics. Remember, in this day and age advisors are the ones that give the president all the information and he/she will make a decision, and sometimes even may rubber stamp. Don't take my word for it, compare the two candidates platform and tell me Where do you see a significant difference between the two?

Now then, it turns to issue of who is more
-electable
-has less baggage
-can improve U.Ss damaged international image
-bring the country together
-will not turn U.S government into a dynasty (is Jeb Bush next if Hillary gets elected? think about it)
-Independent thinker? (remember the whole Musharaf issue?
how about having open discussion with everyone? does
discussion hurt? Hillary in this regard is just a carbon
copy of status quo, look at how she answered renewed relationship post castro).

Sorry, but here in U.S, we are already in enough mess due to non-stop right wing policies and I am afraid Hillary has proven her self not very strong to stand up to this.

This election is not about men/women, or black/white otherwise Condi Rice would have been the most qualified candidate.
