Why does the international media focus so much macabre interest in the dying moments of an Iranian woman?

The ruthless exploitation of the death of Neda for political purposes is an egregious example of a propaganda war being waged by the enemies of Iran – everyone should be concerned, however, since the manipulation of the media and public opinion is a feature of domestic news coverage in the West as much as it is of reporting on a Middle Eastern state, notes Reza Esfandiari and Yousef Bozorgmehr.

The tragic death of Miss Neda Agha-Soltan continues to reverberate five months after her shooting in Tehran. Documentaries have been made about it on British and American television and a scholarship has been awarded by no less than Oxford University in her honour. The pertinent question that needs to be asked is: why?

Why does the international media focus so much macabre interest in the dying moments of an Iranian woman? Why is there is such callous disregard for her right to privacy that her death should be viewed all over the world on Youtube and Twitter?

The answer, of course, is simple: Neda’s murder has been scurrilously exploited by those who seek to put a beautiful name and face to the “struggle for freedom” in Iran. These same people have decided to posthumously call her the “Angel of Freedom [1].”

Miss Agha-Soltan, it should be remembered, was not shot while in the act of any demonstration – the incident happened in a side street at least a kilometre away from where the protests were occurring. Moreover, the unassuming young woman was neither a political activist nor had any affiliation to a civic organisation. She was a student of Islamic philosophy with musical interests and who had a desire to become a tour guide.

If she intended to take part in any protest, she was certainly not any different from the hundreds of thousands who also did. And, unlike some of the more riotous elements among the demonstrators who also lost their lives, Neda did absolutely nothing to provoke any hostility from the security forces, let alone being shot at. She was a threat to none.

Yet we now have begun to hear that she was a high-profile “natural leader” [2] of the protest movement, “committed to the overthrow of Ahmadinejad” whom the Iranian regime had every reason to fear. And if that isn’t enough, she was determined not allow Iran to suffer the fate of a “tyranny worse than that of the Arab and Mongol” invaders of the past [3]. We are also told how she was prepared to be “shot through the heart” [4] in her pursuit of “freedom and democracy for the Iranian people”.

Of course, all of this is utter nonsense that only the most naive of individuals cannot see through. There are several points that the “investigative documentaries” failed to account for or delve into in any way.

A letter sent by the Iranian embassy in the UK to the Provost of Queen’s college [5], which has awarded the Neda scholarship sponsored by an undisclosed British citizen, correctly states that Neda had a high-resolution camera trained on her for a full 20 minutes before the incident took place – this, along with other important observations [6], does give the appearance of it being a pre-rehearsed and staged scenario.

The letter goes on to the mention the fact that Dr Arash Hejazi, a publishing student and medical doctor at Oxford Brookes university, had arrived only two days prior to Neda’s death and left the day after anxious to tell the story to the British media of an innocent woman being shot by a Baseej militiaman – this despite the fact that the Baseej never ever carry firearms outside of military compounds (they use sticks, chains and other household items).

The media has since accepted his testimony uncritically, in particular Times of London correspondent Martin Fletcher, who has been nothing short of an obsessed anti-regime propagandist in the wake of the June election. Indeed, Dr Hejazi changed his story early on – he had initially claimed that the assailant was a rooftop sharpshooter [7], but later said that Neda was shot by a man on a motorcycle [8].

Anyone with even a measure of circumspection would be suspicious of Dr Hejazi’s actions and motives as well as his possible involvement with British intelligence which regularly approaches Iranian students and residents in the UK to serve as informers in Iran. Yet, he is hailed as the “man who heroically tried to save” a bleeding Neda (although there is very little to show for it).

The stolen/lost ID card of a certain Abbas Kargar Javid, posted on the Web with the intention of inviting vigilante-like retribution [9], and the video of a semi-naked man being accosted by demonstrators [10] prove absolutely nothing. There is nothing that links any member of the Baseej force with the murder of Neda. These two pieces of “evidence” were both produced after several months had passed, indicating that they were most likely dug up among the myriad of video footage and documents from the days of the unrest. Moreover, other witnesses present at the scene deny that there was any security presence.

It is inconceivable that an Islamic regime which understands the power of martyrdom in its own culture would sanction the cold-blooded murder of an innocent and ordinary young woman on the streets of Tehran.

However it is every bit conceivable that those who thought the opposition movement needed a symbol and icon of resistance – recipients and supporters no doubt of a $400m CIA-backed destabilization program for Iran [11] - would have arranged this horrible murder and try and pin it on the Iranian authorities.

It is especially salient that the British TV station, Channel 4, whose investigative “Dispatches” program had exposed that policewoman Yvonne Fletcher had not in fact been killed by Libyan diplomats but by underworld operatives linked to the American Government [12], would be so compliant with the official version.

The appalling and brutal murder of an Egyptian woman, Marwa El-Sherbini, in a German courtroom in July of this year has – just a matter of weeks after Neda’s death - has largely been ignored even though it is one of the worst racially-motivated and Islamophobic killings in recent times. Will Mrs Sherbini, “the headscarf martyr”, be honoured in any way by a German university or have films made in commemoration of her? Of course not.

The ruthless exploitation of the death of Neda for political purposes is an egregious example of a propaganda war being waged by the enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran – everyone should be concerned, however, since the manipulation of the media and public opinion is a feature of domestic news coverage in the West as much as it is of reporting on a Middle Eastern state.

Neda believed that Ahmadinejad would win in a land slide?

by American Dream on

The new clip posted by Mardom Mazloom sheds more light into the beliefs of Neda.  She left religious studies after 3 semesters.  Neda believed that Ahmadinejad would be re-elected in a land slide.  Neda refused to vote and at the last minute when she decided to vote all the polling places were operated by Ahmadinejad supporters.  Neda and her boy friend were going to move and live in Turkey permanently.  Everything in this final clip posted reveals that Neda was not part of this reform movement.  The reform movement hijacked Neda's death.

by Maziari on

Neda's MURDER by the Islamic Regime broke the heart of anyone and everyone who has any thread of decency. It is a rare moment in history that a visual record of what happened was captured by an anonymous bystander and was released on the internet for all to see.

It was not captured by a news team. It confirmed that a new age has arrived. No longer is the power of news in the hands of a few. Anyone with a camera phone and an internet connection can capture an EVENT that has the potential to change public opinion.

The likes of Reza Esfandiari, known regime sympathizer and apologist, may complain as they must, but it has no effect. Murder of Neda symbolizes the murder, torture, suppression and imprisonment of a nation by a backward, religious dictatorship that belongs to history’s DUST BIN.

and truly worthy of the media attention it has receved globally. This tragic event has come to symbolise the tragic struggle of Iranian people looking to rid themselves of the shackles of a tyrannical and cruel regime.

This graphic murder clearly resonates with ordinary people, such is the grip that the death of an innocent has on any sane person.

The Hussein story is endlessly being exploited by the Mollas. It is ironic that they now, through stooges such as you are crying foul.

by Sargord Pirouz on

Esfandiari and Bozorgmehr bring up valid points.

Dr Hejazi’s most recent account of what took place raises several questions. I personally emailed Hejazi to find out more, but to date he has ignored my query.

Back in 1970, in the United States, 19 year old college freshman Allison Krause was shot to death by US  National Guards while protesting at Kent State University. The Western press certainly didn’t make her an “Angel of Freedom”. And no, Oxford University didn't initiate a scholarship in her name.

In the case of Neda, the obvious intent of the Western media is to demonize Iran. Just another element for the Zionist neocon anti-Iran agenda.

Reza Esfandiari & Yousef Bozorgmehr's argument...

by American Dream on

Reza Esfandiari & Yousef Bozorgmehr's argument is similar to the argument that Iranian President Ahmadinejad made to Katie Couric.  The Couric interview occurred when Iranian President Ahmadinejad visited New York after the June 2009 Iranian elections.

The only new thing that the article by Reza Esfandiari & Yousef Bozorgmehr is that Neda was a student of Islamic philosophy.  That changes the whole big picture.

If Neda was truly a student of Islamic philosophy it is highly unlikely that she was opposed to the Iranian theocracy.  And Neda having musical interests is similar to Ayat'Allah Ali Khamenei being a santoor player many years ago.  And Neda's desire to become a tour guide is even more suspect.  The only tourist sites in Iran that are kept in good shape are the religious ones.  All this information would bolster the conclusion that Neda might have been a die hard Hizb'Allahi.

Revolutions devour its own children.  This is a historical fact.  Abbas Amir Entezam, Sadegh Ghotbzadeh, Ayat'Allah Hossein Ali Montazeri, Abolhassan Banisadr, Ebrahim Yazdi, Akbar Ganji and the list goes on.

The protests in Iran have run there course.  Everything has settled down.  It appears that the I.R.I. wants to re-write history.  They seem to have missed the point that the world has moved on.

by IRANdokht on

I don't agree with the exploitation of Neda's death either, but anyone who blames the victim or tries to deny that she had a significant role in the continuation of the demonstrations and the movement is not doing the Iranian people any favor. Every movement needs a champion, someone who in life or death can gather large crowds and keep the focus on. Neda's death was very significant, so were the other victims of the brutal crack down of the IRI regime. Her significance is also important as the role of women in this uprising, the ones who peacefully asked for freedom and were attacked, raped or killed for it. She's also significant because of her mother's stance after her death which again proves the crucial role of the Iranian women and mothers in the society.

Unfortunately, it seems that your views are not anti exploitation, but anti movement. Aren't you exploiting Neda's death for your own agenda too?

Iran Street in Yemen’s capital Sana’a, meanwhile, has been renamed after Neda Agha Soltan, the young protester who was shot dead in June at the start of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s post-election crackdown in Iran – and whose dying moments were broadcast across the world. Go to Guardian.

The real question is why is the Islamic Republic so sensitive about this issue that it has officially launched a damage control campaign? Does the Islamist republic think that people of the world don't know about thousands of other Neda's? what a pathetic charade.

There was a time that the Islamic Republic's poker game strategy was a mystery to everyone but not anymore. The Islamic republic of rapists should realize that by virtue of playing this game for this long they have revealed all of their decision makeing strategies and their hand has been exposed. It's a simple game theory logic. It's not Neda's fault.

Q

A few points,

by Q on

Dear Esfandiari and Bozorgmehr,

Of course you are correct, the Western media is simply exploiting the situation. We all know that. Any intelligent person can see it. There must be hundreds of "Neda's" in all the countries that are friendly to the US, including almost all Arab other dictatorships in the region. Add to the this the regions that the West just isn't concerned about because there is no strategic or political value in them at the moment such as Burma, Chechnya, East Turkestan or Tibet and the hypocrisy becomes clear as day.

When you see the big-budget media spend 100 times more energy on Neda than on the on-going genocide in Sudan, or the bombing of innocent civlians in Gaza, there is no other conclusion to draw other than this is shameless and opportunistic exploitation.

To people who really know the situation, it was also clear that the hardliners are extremely image-conscious and did their best to keep its own goons under control. If they really wanted to kill people indiscriminately, there are much easier ways for them.

But this doesn't mean, Neda was not real. To me, it's a media event like the 9/11 attacks. Just because there are people exploiting the aftermath (and they clearly were), doesn't mean they are behind the event itself.

Onlyiran

As if

by Onlyiran on

we can't tell the difference between facts and a dictatorship's attempts to wrap  itself in the flag and call all who talk about its atrocities and crimes "anti- [insert country here]".  Hell, you don't even have to be a dictatorship.  George W. Bush even used the tactic for 8 years to demonize its opponents.  It's the oldest trick in the book buddy.  Go tell it to someone who doesn't know.

criticizing the IRI and bringing its crimes against the Iranian people to light is not the same as being and "enemy of Iran".  The biggest enemy of Iran and Iranians is the IRI itself.

The IRI has been pretty savvy for the past 30 years, and it has used almost everything that has come its way for its benefit and propaganda.  This time around, though, they miscalculated, and lost control.  Who know why.  Maybe its was their in-fighting, maybe it was that power had gone to their heads, may be that they were afraid and panicked, maybe it was that they underestimated the Iranian people's resolve.  But whatever the cause was, the end result was that they went "off script" and the result was that their crimes became public, and the world saw their propensity for violence in real time.  Now, they are in damage control mode, and the powerful Neda story and video is the one thing that they cannot "wipe off" the collective memory of the citizens of the word. So, they send agents like you out to create doubt, come up with ridiculous theories and slanderous accusations just to see if they can blur this event enough to lessen its impact.  Much to your chagrin though, it will not work.  "dastetoon rroo shodeh".  All these "foreign conspiracy" thing may fool your Basij thugs and motivate them to get onto the streets to  kill more people, but it will not fool anyone with an ounce of brain.

Ahura

Lies and Alibis

by Ahura on

This is the same misinformation that Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) had futilely advanced in explanation of what the world community saw on TV screens as the barbaric beatings and killings of innocent and peaceful demonstrators who were exercising their constitutional right of assembly in objection to the fraudulent presidential election results.  The authors of this article would be hard pressed to explain away or deny the other factual events, namely, the scores of killings, beatings, raping, forced detentions, and ongoing closed revolutionary court trials administering injustice par excellence.

The transcript of IRI is replete with documented murders of hundreds of Iranians inside and abroad, execution of thousands of political prisoners, plundering of country’s wealth, support of domestic and international terrorism, and in the name of religion practicing and preaching ignorance, prejudice, and violence as we all saw recently.

To parallel the logic of the authors in exonerating IRI from the murder of Ms. Neda Agha Sultan, I can venture the following explanations for few other deaths blamed on IRI:

1. Mrs. Zahra Kazemi a 54-year Iranian-Canadian reporter who was arrested in June 23, 2003 on the orders of Saeid Mortazavi, the Prosecutor for Tehran and the Islamic Revolution tribunals while photographing a demonstration by the families of political prisoners outside Tehran's Evin prison. She was transported to the hospital four days later and pronounced brain dead, with official explanation of 'The death of the late Kazemi was an accident due to a fall in blood pressure resulting from hunger strike and her fall on the ground while standing.'

A more reasonable explanation would be that she tripped and hit her head on the sole of judge’s shoes, and this unfortunate incident happened few times to the chagrin of the honorable Judge.

//www.iran-press-service.com/ips/articles-2005/april-2005/kazemi_report_1405.shtml

2. Dr. Shahpour Bakhtiar was murdered on August 7, 1991 along with his secretary, Soroush Katibeh, by three assassins in his home. The inquest found that he was stabbed by a knife matching a nearby blood stained bread knife. Two of the assassins escaped to Iran, but the third, Ali Vakili Rad, was apprehended in Switzerland as well as an alleged accomplice, Zeyal Sarhadi,a great-nephew of former president of Iran Hasemi Rafsanjani, and both were extradited to France for trial. Vakili Rad was sentenced to life in prison in December 1994, although Sarhadi was acquitted. A better IRI version of this unfortunate accident would be that “The three IRI guests were peeling oranges with bread knife when the host tripped on the rug and fell on the knife, not only once, but few times.”

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shapour_Bakhtiar

3.  Same explanation as above can be given about the murder of Feraydoun Farrokhzad on August 6, 1992 who was stabbed 40 times with a knife at his home in Bonn, Germany. He was found three days later by his neighbor, his body lying in a pool of blood with his dog whimpering beside him. The murder has been treated as a work of the Iranian Government intelligent service, because of Farrokhzad's anti-Islamic Republic remarks in his shows, which insulted Ayatollah Khomeini and other leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Dr. Hejazi- Please Sue These Clowns

by Anonymous Observer on

"Anyone with even a measure of circumspection would be suspicious of Dr Hejazi’s actions and motives as well as his possible involvement with British intelligence..."

Dr. Hejazi, if you happen to be reading this site, please take my humble advice and sue the authors of this piece of propaganda.  You now reside in the UK.  My understanding is that defamation laws in UK are pretty strict, and you can easily sue these writers for slandering you by essentially calling you a British agent and subtly accusing you of being involved in Neda's murder.  Please, please, please, I urge you not to let them get away with this.  The regime in Iran is getting away with murder.  You should not allow insult to be added to injury and allow slanderers like this to get away with this kind of outrageous accusation.

As you may know, the controversial organization NIAC in the U.S. has sued an individual because that individual accused NIAC of being a lobby organization for the Islamic Republic. That lawsuit has been enthusiastically cheered on by Islamists and pro-IRI groups and individuals.  The defamation contained in this article is no different, and no less serious, than that lodged against NIAC.  Therefore, I urge you to give these people a taste of their own medicine, and to also hold them accountable for their out of control character assassinations, which is nothing but an attempt to somehow create a non-existent controversy and to create a lot of noise, so that the most powerful symbol of the regime's brutality, i.e, the death of Neda Agha Sultan can be erased, or at least put in a cloud of manufactured suspicion and uncertainty.

Again, if you are reading this article, I urge you to commence legal action against these two individuals.
