Discovery News: The remains of a mighty Persian army said to have drowned in the sands of the western Egyptian desert 2,500 years ago might have been finally located, solving one of archaeology's biggest outstanding mysteries, according to Italian researchers. Bronze weapons, a silver bracelet, an earring and hundreds of human bones found in the vast desolate wilderness of the Sahara desert have raised hopes of finally finding the lost army of Persian King Cambyses II. The 50,000 warriors were said to be buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C. "We have found the first archaeological evidence of a story reported by the Greek historian Herodotus," Dario Del Bufalo, a member of the expedition from the University of Lecce, told Discovery News >>>

by ramintork on Tue Nov 10, 2009 07:54 AM PSTNo this is Egypt and Camyses not Xerxes and 300.
Cambyses sent an army to threaten the Oracle of Amun at the Siwa Oasis and 50,000 men were lost.

by Anonymous Observer on Tue Nov 10, 2009 10:28 AM PSTIt’s quite plausible that this is, in fact, the lost army. First, Persian artifacts of the era are found with the bones. Second, desert sand is a perfect preserver. The intense heat and the high salt content are natural preservatives. That is why there are so many Egyptian mummies that are perfectly preserved. In fact, at some point English “archeologists” were finding so many mummified bodies in Egypt that were just naturally preserved after burial that they were using them as fuel for their coal burning trains (sad, but true). Third, these bones were buried under the desert sand for thousands of years, and are just surfacing due to shifting nature of the sand.
All the above being said, I am sure that they have dating methods for these remains which they will use to confirm the age.
joint custody
by mahmoudg on Tue Nov 10, 2009 07:45 AM PSTthere should be a jount custody with Egypt and Italy to safekeep the remains until such time the invaders are thrown out of Iran, before we take the remains of this mighty Army back to its rightful place in Persia. Just imagine if this might was available when the backward Mohamadens i.e. Yazid and his measly army were daring to invade Persia
Come on...
by ghalam-doon on Tue Nov 10, 2009 07:31 AM PSTSo what they're saying those bones and skulls that we saw in the film have been sitting under the sun for the past 2,500 years?
Most likely they're the results of a mass murder in the recent Egyptian history.
As somebody said here LOL and lots of it.
I agree Ramin
by Anonymous Observer on Tue Nov 10, 2009 07:00 AM PSTthe remains of these soldiers should be brought home and be given a proper burial. They should not be left on the desert floor like this. In fact, we should have been the ones leading this archeological expedition, but I guess we don't have the resources for that. Iran's money is better spent on expanding the Jamkaran well, the Emamzadeh Yahya shrine, free cash and weapons to Hezbollah, etc.....anti-Iranian regime indeed!
If true these soldiers should come home!
by ramintork on Tue Nov 10, 2009 06:39 AM PSTTechnically these soldiers deserve the same respect and honour as soldiers who had died in the Iran-Iraq War.
If true these soldiers should come home, but not under this Iran hating regime.

by ex programmer craig on Tue Nov 10, 2009 03:28 AM PSTThanks for posting that! Even if the Egyptians don't authorize any major excavation on the site, it sounds like the two Italains have already found enough evidence to vindicate their theory!
