MADRID (AFP) – Unheralded Aravane Rezai thrust herself into contention as a Roland Garros threat on Sunday with a stunning 6-2, 7-5 victory over Venus Williams to win the Madrid Masters after a week-long, giant-killing run. "The French Open is another tournament and I will try my best at the first match," said the winner. "Every match is difficult. I have to take it one match at a time and we'll see." The upset in just under one and three-quarter hours marked the biggest success in the career of the Frenchwoman, whose previous two WTA titles were in Strasbourg and Bali. Sunday's victory was Rezai's third major triumph this week after knocking out former number one players Justine Henin in the first round and Jelena Jankovic in the quarters. "It's the best week of my career and I'm very happy," said Rezai. "I played very well, I'm very proud of myself because it was a very tough tournament and a lot of players were here >>>

Bravo Aravaneh! Although pitty! EScrew Ahmadi, Aravaneh jaan!
by Anonymouse on Sun May 16, 2010 02:32 PM PDTShe looks a little like that Roxana Saberi. I can see Aravane wanting to see his nahsiness Ahmadi as a "celebrity" but not that much!
Everything is sacred.
it is hard to understand
by Anahid Hojjati on Sun May 16, 2010 02:29 PM PDTYou know what? From early 80s, I have been against IRI and everyone knows my position about the monkey but there were people in Iran who witnessed all IRI crimes and still supported it so how is it that they can be so quick now to blame others?
Athletic
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Sun May 16, 2010 02:29 PM PDTprowess does not mean political smarts. They are very different. Same goes for other things. A good scientist may not be good politically or artistic. This happens in the USA a lot. They made a spectacle out of Tiger Woods. Poos guy is just a horny golf player. Same goes for movie stars. Lets have people get recognition for what they are good at not anything other than it.
Now if Shirin Ebadi made political staements they must be listened to.
Someone should ask this tennis twit,
by boom shakalaka on Sun May 16, 2010 02:29 PM PDT"Do you think you could do what you do (play tennis) and dress the way you do as a woman in Iran?" If the answer is no, then why support a man who would stifle your brilliant potential? Would you be happy as a woman in Iran knowing you could be a world-class tennis player, but because of a corrupt, backward regime, you couldn't participate? How would that make you feel, Ms. Rezai? Not very good, to be sure! So, why be such a monumental hypocrite and subject millions of Iranian women to such a dastardly fate?
This ignorant tennis twit is the one who's against women's rights in Iran! Not the men commenting on this site! And by the way, Ms. Hojjati, there were plenty of women who saw mullah Khomeini's ugly face on the moon in the fall of 1978. There were plenty of black chadoor-clad hags beating their chests for the mullah. One of the leaders of the terrorists who seized the US embassy on Nov. 4 1979 was a woman by the way, Massoumeh something. We're all in this shit hole together.
Iran is a prisoner of IRI
Ms. Hojjati, are you serious?
by boom shakalaka on Mon May 17, 2010 04:15 AM PDTAhmadinejad and co. raped, murdered and tortured countless innocent Iranians JUST LAST SUMMER, have you forgotten?
My God, what does being a "man" have to do with this issue? A little insecure, aren't you? My sisters where also disappointed by her show of support for Ahmad the monkey, are they "hamisheh dar sahneh" to bring her down too? I mean, please, don't bring your inner personal issues into political discussions. Antar-inejad and his cabal is guilty of crimes against humanity, and she supports this guy! It'd be akin to a German female athelete supporting Hitler!
As such, she becomes fair game for criticism, regardless of her sex. The blood of innocents has barely dried off the streets of Iran! This twit deserves far more criticism for her depraved support of a genocidal criminal. What's more, she's a hypocrite. She prances around in her short shorts with her hair uncovered in the west and has the uber gall to support a dictator who would gang rape her for walking around like that in Tehran.
That's hypocricy! That's outright ridiculous! And it has absolutely nothing to do with her freaking sex. If she was a MALE Iranian tennis player supporting Ahmad the monkey, I'd be here disparaging him JUST AS MUCH!!!
Why is this so hard for you to understand, madame?

In any struggle for justice
by Babak K. on Sun May 16, 2010 02:10 PM PDTIn any struggle for justice and freedom we should expect betryals. Last night I was in a dinner party and an Iranian lady who was drinking wine with a very revealing dress started confronting me when I was talking about my recent trip to Iran. she deneid everything that I had witnessed in Iran and tried to share with everybody else.. Basically, she defended every aspect of Iranian regime while she was holding a glass of wine. When I talked about rapes in Islamic regime prisons she said "let's hope that everybody enjoed it". This Iranian woman in the Videos is a great tennis payer but it does not mean that she is a decent person. I can tell you with ceraitinty that her parents are a typical Iranian bastards (thanks god we got plennty of them). In our struggle for freedom and truth we do not need every Iranian Be-Vojdan in our side we can do without them

divaneh jan, it is you men who make it battle of sexes
by Anahid Hojjati on Sun May 16, 2010 02:04 PM PDTDivaneh, it only took some Iranian men couple hours to be judge and jury regarding her and she is not even a politician. By the way, it is not battle of sexes but guess who has screwed up Iran? It has not been Iranian women, I assure you.

A French Woman who happened to be born into an Islamic Not
by Everybody Loves Somebody ... on Sun May 16, 2010 02:00 PM PDTan Iranian family. Her last name is Rezaie (after the 7+1 Imam!) She is only 23 years old. Two years ago when she was 21 she traveled to her parents' country (Iran) and like her counterparts 31 years ago she was fascinated with the Islamic Regime and its president Ahamad Gooreel.
Just remember your fascination with Imam Khomenei 31 years ago. Admit it, you were young and naive just like she is young and naive now.
In a couple of years when she becomes well-informed she will come to her senses and register on IC under anonymous names and will use profane language on Ahamad just like the rest of us!? And JJ will keep deleting her comments....
In the meantime, let her enjoy her great achievement.

by aviator on Sun May 16, 2010 02:14 PM PDTshe's, or not, for ahmadinejad, and so what ? it's her opinion which can also change, as for everybody. your opinions are respectable when you respect those of others, don’t forget.
as iranian we have to be proud of her courage and performance. she worked hard for many years before getting there. try to do the same, then come and judge...
