Aravane Rezai

Wins Madrid tennis title

MADRID (AFP) – Unheralded Aravane Rezai thrust herself into contention as a Roland Garros threat on Sunday with a stunning 6-2, 7-5 victory over Venus Williams to win the Madrid Masters after a week-long, giant-killing run. "The French Open is another tournament and I will try my best at the first match," said the winner. "Every match is difficult. I have to take it one match at a time and we'll see." The upset in just under one and three-quarter hours marked the biggest success in the career of the Frenchwoman, whose previous two WTA titles were in Strasbourg and Bali. Sunday's victory was Rezai's third major triumph this week after knocking out former number one players Justine Henin in the first round and Jelena Jankovic in the quarters. "It's the best week of my career and I'm very happy," said Rezai. "I played very well, I'm very proud of myself because it was a very tough tournament and a lot of players were here >>>

You're too kind, brother, not to mention wiser than 99.8% of the souls trafficking on this site. I wish I was a bit more tech-savvy, we could seriously make this dog-and-pony show ten times more popular in a week!

How about some ad space for the Mustang Ranch on each side of the page, along with a layout of the inventory? You like? Or rather, could you still concentrate on the cause of freedom in Iran?

JJ, if you call yourself a journalist

by aynak on

at least do yourhomework.   Other than the interview from prior to the coup,  when did she come out supporting Ahmadi-Nejad?

Islamic Regime did not even sponsor her, even though she wanted to represent Iran.

It is mind boggling people trying to equate a 23 (back then 22) year old who wasn't even born in Iran, and have no idea of the politics there, but said something in support of Ahamdi-Njead most likely due to ignorance of what Ahmadi Nejad stands for, with traitors and now all these harsh attacks.

Think about it, would it be fair to judge you because some twenty odd years ago you showed up on some TV sponsored by Islamic Regime?   I am never that one dimensional.   Because some of the most Anti-Islamic regime folks I know today, used to be avid Khomanee supporters, but I see it as strength for them to change (if it is geninue and not  wind driven, I am sure you know what I mean).

In the case of Arghavaneh, she has nothing to gain by saying she supports Ahmadi-Nejad.   Other than hearing  Ahmadi-Nejads "anti powerful countries domination" rethorics which coincidentally prior to last years coup resonated well with many people across the globe, she probably has no clue about Ahmadi-Nejad the pschcopath and what he is doing to Iran.

Now  I know the regular professional posters here, have a check list of Khoob ha va bad ha, and ready to jump on anything and anyone that is not in party line, and I am willing to bet majority dont even follow tennis, but this is before anything else about the hardwork of a fellow Iranian woman, who has achieved a great milestone in tennis  by her work ethics and persistence and that should make us all proud.    If we can't be happy for her and congratulate her, then that's fine, but for heavns sake she is not a politician, she is not a decision maker for IRI nor a beneficiary of IRI,  she is just a tennis player and a darn good one at that, and  that's what her win is about.

In terms of publicity for the cause of freedom in Iran, without fear of punishment, this woman could accomplish a lot of good things. The IRI would never send assasins to kill a celebrated Wimbledon Champion, no way! They're like the Mafia, they can't afford that kind of publicity (John Gotti never understood this little fact). They can kill protestors in the name of "national security" and get away with it, but what's their excuse for killing a world champion tennis player?

why can't you just enjoy the glory of a young women from her background capturing such a title?  Why can't you enjoy the tennis?

Did any of you support her when the French Tennis organizations were snobbing her? When her family got poor and had to sleep in mobile homes for her dream to go on?  Where were you then?

Now, suddenly, everybody is putting her under a micoscope to see if they approve of her or not!  You go win the masters in Madrid and then come lecture me about what I should think of Arghavan.

Do you think I, or Arghavan, give a care about what you losers think here?  This is the highest level of sports achievement yet for an Iranian woman.

I hope she's riding a fine latin lover tonight after her conquest.

The problem is not her right to hold an opinion

by oktaby on

Or express it in a public forum without backlash or repercussions.  If true, the problem is:

1-She expresses support for a person and mindset that would have prevented her success, expression and existence as it it is. Exposed thighs and all, and as she holds the Madrid trophy

2-That the apologists and their gomashte cheering her, essentially do the same. They support a person and system that would have put her in prison for dressing as she has. Or opening her mouth to support or say anything other than AN, or Mousavi for that matter.

Now linking this to An's number of votes!? Well, that's not just from the left field, but desperate. As in vasat da'va nerkh tey mikone.

"this athlete is irrelevant to the issue one way or another."

Indeed, she's irrelevant for now and hopefully will stay that way, but how relevant could she **potentially** be as a Wimbledon Champion if she was fighting the good fight? The cause of freedom could use uber celeberated atheletes and entertainers with a global platform (and tennis is one of those sports), for she could shine the light of justice on the crimes going on in Iran right now when seemingly most international news organizations have forgotten about us. Or, she could make it her crusade, to promote the cause of equality for women in Iran. She could potentially do sooooooooo much good, in terms of publicity and awareness, for the cause of freedom in Iran if she ever did win Wimbledon or the US Open -- that is, if she changed sides!

And the beauty part, the IRI could not touch her, too famous!

"I swear, this is the only reason why I work-out, box and wrestle, to beat the Americanized liberals and Islamists senseless when I meet them."

So funny! I have to admit, I love your passion, bro! But be careful, the rules of the road on this site are administered extremely arbitrarily, if you know what I mean.  Profoudly lame, all of it, to be sure. Freedom of speech has little-to-no value on this site. Or rather, it does NOT sit on a sacred pedestal as the moniker of this site seems to suggest, therefore the whole show borders on false advertisement.

Mind you, freedom of speech should be THE MOST SACRED of all pillars in a free and just world. But that's not always the case on this site, sadly. Arbitrary, inconsisent, often unfair, almost always unnecessary. Nevertheless, the fight is worth it, bro, so keep it up!

When you're a public figure, you should be wary of what you say in public because it will indeed be closely scrutinized, but a HUGE NO to the following statement you made: "Aravane is a fantastic tennis player and we all want her to win Wimbledon and the French and U.S. Open and become the No 1 player in the world."

Not me, pal. Count me out of your grossly premature generalization. When did we change the rules of politics vis-a-vis affiliations in Iran? In the old days, if you were a "Savaki" that was the KISS-OF-DEATH, but here, we're supposed to root for this tennis twit who supports the very same brutal, rapist regime which killed scores of innocent Iranians, including Neda and Sohrab, and raped countless innocent men and women last summer, NOT TO MENTION FOR THE LAST 31 YEARS? What the hell???

SHE IS A two-bit BASIJI, as far as I'm concerned.

This twit supports a butcher like Ahmadinejad, who's main backers are the basijis and the Revolutionary Guards, the two vicious forces who murdered, tortured and raped and ran over innocent people with trucks in Tehran last summer. Guilt by association, period! I hope to God she never wins another bloody match the rest of her life, unless she changes her tune! Can you imagine if she wins Wimbledon and in her coronation ceremony in front of millions all over the world she gives a shout-out to her man-hero Ahmad the monkey???

Your typical clueless retard

by Iraniandudee3 on

Believe it or not, most of the youth (Mainly women) who participated in the 1979 rev were exactly like her, naive, stubborn and clueless as hell into what they were doing, it's kind of like now where you have these spoiled Americanized liberal  kids of bazari's who yell Allah o akbar, or ya hussain along with the islamist mousavi supporters, yet at the same time go to party's and drink etc.. They're like sheep following anyone without thinking or looking at the whole picture basically.

I personally believe after the fall of the islamic regime we ( Average Iranians) need to form a nationalist party that prevents such retarded assholes from causing anarchy in our country, cause why should most suffer for the stupidity and the actions of a minority? Let's crack their skulls open. Time to get violent for once.

If I ever met her I wouldn't only punch her in the mouth, but beat her parents senseless for raising such a clueless and ignorant kid..

I swear, this is the only reason why I work-out, box and wrestle, to beat the Americanized liberals and Islamists senseless when I meet them.

Congratulation

by benross on

I don't care about her political affiliation. As I understand, unlike Agassi, she doesn't mind her Iranian origin and that calls for a warm congratulation.

As for her political affiliation, well she is French. Normal. There is no U.S hater a French saw and didn't like! France, the bedrock of all failed lefty thinking enforced by a general French anti-American feeling, for their inferiority complex (yes, it's not only in the third world!) for the fact that they offered their country to Nazis with open arms and cooperated with them until the end and that finally Americans liberated them. Not De-Gaul, nor communist partisan resistance. Americans. And their imperial inspirations were doomed ever since. You must understand their feelings. We lost our imperial inspirations 1400 years ago and we have not gotten over it yet!

So anybody who says 'death to America' must be an honorable man because even now, the French doesn't have the guts to say it out-loud and satisfy their inferiority complex! They let others to do it for them!

Typical third world mentality!.. minus the guts.

(sorry DK jan, but this is the truth. don't be mad. they have good things too!)

Jahanshah Javid

Responsibility

by Jahanshah Javid on

Nobody is denying Aravane's great talent and unique achievement in the highly competitive world of professional tennis. No Iranian female tennis player has gotten this far.

But when you are a public figure, everything you do or say will come under close scrutiny. If a famous person goes in front of the camera and says how great Ahmadinejad is, there will be a strong reaction. It's only natural that many will get upset, especially considering what has happened in the past year.

Shirin Ebadi has received the Nobel Price -- the highest and most prestigious international award received by any Iranian. How do you think people would react if she came out in support of the Islamic Republic?

How would we react if Anoosheh Ansari, the first Iranian in space, gave her blessing to Velayate Faghih?

What kind of reaction would Shohreh Aghdashloo get if she said wonderful things about Ahmadinejad after winning her Emmy?

Hasn't Marziyeh, one of the greatest Iranian singers of all time, lost a great deal of respect for supporting the Mojahedin?

Would people love Googoosh just as much if she condemned the Green Movement and sided with basijis?

So it comes down to this: Aravane is a fantastic tennis player and we all want her to win Wimbledon and the French and U.S. Open and become the No 1 player in the world. But if she supports a brutal dictator, she's going to lose a lot of love.

How many men do you know in IC who have been praising Reza Zadeh? How many men in this site only recently praised Forough and Parvin?

There are great Iranian women such as Shirin Ebadi, Simin Behbahani, Shiva Nazar Ahari, Shadi Sadr and many more who are loved and respected by many Iranians including myself. There are also those such as Aravane and Dastjerdi (AN's Health Minister) who do not deserve the same respect and affection. As a man I must have the right to approve of some and dissapprove of some others without being labelled.

If I am right her manager is her father (a man) and he must be the one who agreed to be a part of AN’s campaign. There you go. Now we can both have our cakes.

but for me telling any girl who ever aspires to be a tennis player or do anything well in life this sums up a great deal about Arghavaneh.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLZK6kkgzfw

My great grand ma used to say there are 1001 different types of crazy people, only 1 type is sent to an institution.  Inspite of all claims to freedmom and women movement and causes, we can say:   There are 1001 different type of chomagh dar (Club wielders) , only 1 type is hezbollahi.

It is amuzing that what she did questions everything that IRI stands for and yet I suppose it is fashionable to kill our best to justify our own mediocrity.

by boom shakalaka on

we live in, specially for Iranians. Last summer was a huge development in the history of Iran and its struggle for democracy -- it was a momentous occasion to be sure. And we don't need high-profile individuals to muddy the waters. Professional athelets used to defect from Soviet Union, and many from South Africa. Where's the solidarity with the Iranian people? This girl's parents have corrupted her. They're the one who are the real culprits. Nonetheless, she's 23 years old and a woman, enough said. Women are viewed as half of a man in Iranian courts, how the hell could this female tennis player support such a bombastic, chauvinist regime?
