AP -- Police say an Iranian immigrant who doused himself in gasoline and then set himself on fire in central Amsterdam has died of his injuries. A police statement says the 36-year-old's bid to secure a residency in the Netherlands was rejected before the incidents. Photos of the dramatic event began to circulate via social media and websites minutes after it occurred Wednesday. One showed the victim on his back, engulfed in flames, while people tried to put out the fire with their coats. The statement said Thursday that the victim was given first aid and taken to a burn center, but never regained consciousness. The Dutch have increased restrictions on immigration over the past decade amid growing anti-Muslim sentiment.

Refugees & liberty
by Jahanshah Javid on Thu Apr 07, 2011 04:32 AM PDTthe hell with the Dutch, Europe... any country that makes it tougher and tougher for refugees to escape tyranny and live in freedom.
Shouldn't there be an international convention guaranteeing liberty for all those who escape dictatorships or economic hardship?
