by Simorgh5555 on Tue Oct 11, 2011 11:01 PM PDTYou may be a second rate comedian but you are a wonderful soul who is not ashamed of embracing her Iranian background and speaking up for these important issues. I know your father and your brother Peyvand so you are from a great family. Please don't take offence if I don't find you funny (although you did make me smile) but thats just my taste.
DEATH TO THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC. Thank you Amnesty and Shaparak.
This is from an e-mail sent by Amnesty regarding Iran
by Anahid Hojjati on Tue Oct 11, 2011 08:53 PM PDTI received this e-mail from Amnesty International. I thought I would share with you:
"Dear Anahid,
It's called Azadi Square - literally "Freedom Square" in Persian.
For decades, it has been the central point of human rights activism in Iran. Two years ago, when the disputed results of a presidential election compelled many to take to the streets, Azadi Square was the backdrop of countless student protests. Although the protests began as peaceful, protesters were met with violence once riot police were dispersed.
Two students who were swept up in the resulting wave of government crackdowns that followed were Behareh Hedayat and Majid Tavakkoli.
Behareh - an economics student turned women's rights advocate is now serving 10 years in prison sentence for her activism.
Majid - a shipbuilding student turned prominent student leader is now serving nine years in prison for his activism.
We can't think of a better place to take a stand for their rights and the rights of all Iran's peaceful student protesters than in Azadi Square.
Demand the release of all Iran's peaceful student protesters!
Starting today, we're opening up a virtual Azadi Square to supporters worldwide. In the virtual Azadi Square, all human rights are protected - including freedom of expression, assembly and association.
That is why we're inviting you to join us in sending a powerful message to the Iranian government. Even if students are imprisoned for their activism, their calls for human rights can never be silenced!
For every 10,000 signatures gathered on our petition for protecting student's rights in Iran, Amnesty representatives will publicly present your signatures in a new and powerful way. But you'll have to keep checking back to find out what we'll do next!
Visit Amnesty's Azadi Square and stand up for the rights of student protesters in Iran!
Behareh Hedayat and Majid Tavakkoli, like many others, were simply students who spoke publicly about their political opinions. They do not deserve this injustice.
Take action now and give them hope. Demonstrate the power of standing together for human rights!
Thank You,
Elise Auerbach

Religions take SEX too seriously!
by Disenchanted on Tue Oct 11, 2011 06:51 PM PDTStoning for sleeping with with someone while married?! Where is the sense of proportion?!
Honestly, it is a matter of tradition, ancient traditions that religions are so obsessed with all kind of SEX! Not that I condone adultery but there has to be a sense of proportion!
It is really barbaric. If the goal is torture one can try "enhanced interrogation techniques" like water boarding etc! ;-)
LOL..Last Time we tried educating them they Started a Revolution
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Tue Oct 11, 2011 05:15 PM PDTDK we didn't do a good job educating one group in particular..
The same people who even today think we can go from a tyranny like the hebollahi party in iran to a full fledged democracy. You shouldn't smack their pride too hard though, after engaging in delusions that they could do a better job than the late shah's team and instead of admitting that they were wrong in 1970's knocking their prde will make them act in a lowborn, stubborn and disingenuous way. For example they will start reviving the falsehoods they and US/UK media held up high as works of Fact regarding 1)dictatorship 2)repression3)corruption sadly that just says all you need to know about the character of the people we are dealing with.
Education?
by comments on Tue Oct 11, 2011 05:07 PM PDTWe talk about educating people in Africa by providing condom to them. But, we don’t think that educating Iranians could be a solution because Iranians are “all” educated.
I bet many of those who participate in stoning have a college degree. Don’t none of Africans who do not use condom have a college degree?
So I don't mean obtaining a degree. I mean a basic cultural or human rights education.

Education.
by comments on Tue Oct 11, 2011 05:01 PM PDTVast majority of Iranians are against stoning but a small number participate and enjoy. Aren’t all called "Iranians"? I don't think the minorities participate because they are pro-government. They are not educated (i.e. nafahm). I think educating Iranians has to be prioritized.
Sometimes I wish IC users answers "why" and reasoning questions in stead of excessive usage of negative or positive adjectives to praise or condemn which is usually the case.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Tue Oct 11, 2011 04:36 PM PDTThe Regime BBC and Amnesty helped create... with a majority of misled nafam and a number of khaen.
Happy JJ.
Funny you want to see the entire statement, to try and make a case for personal responsibilty somehow out of irans current predicament.
Iran is a clear case of deceit, coercion, betrayal and manipulation... with your logic that the statement is rooted in blame, we should smilarly put the onus of slavery on the slaves. And of course the holocaust was the fault of the jews themselves Right JJ / Vildemouse.
Thanks to the Shah, based on his true record and the way he left the scene of neocolonialism on Iranians, he made it so that even a child could see clearly exactly what was happening and continues to this day. I for one do believe there are victims of crimes and I do think the fault does NOT lie with Iranians (despite being ignorant, niave, backwards).
Thinking the bbc and amnesty along with US/UK policy were not a greater part of the fault is ridiculous to me under the circumstances. Amnesty and bbc were just 2 tools of many in US/UK foreign policy. But you are entitled to your own point of view, too.

"I can not end this piece without mentioning the Iranian-born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo who narrated this film. Her politics in recent times has become clearer and clearer, appearing in Fox News and being courted by neo-conservatives. Her last film, Stoning Soraya had all the elements of psychological warfare, backed by Christian right-wing zealots. She may have become a star in Hollywood, but she is no star for me, who never misses an opportunity to poison what the American audience gets to see from her about Iran and Iranians."

Morbid gloat!
by Arj on Tue Oct 11, 2011 01:14 PM PDTGreat job by SK actualizing the horror of this barbaric ritual in the most casual way. It's nonetheless so disappointing to see a bunch of sad, pathetic individuals trying to blame the victims (the entire people of Iran) for crimes of a barbaric system in order to justify the crimes of another brutal, yet expired regime!
If you don't have anything positive to do to change the present situation, at least wake up and stop feeling sorry for yourselves! Shah is dead and will not come back to life by hating and blaming the people. no matter how much they suffer!
Horrible
by asadabad on Tue Oct 11, 2011 11:06 AM PDTIt would've been more effective if they didn't use silly music and a comedian. This is serious.
By the way, stoning is more common in Iran than Afghanistan. Since 2006, 6 Iranians have been stoned to death, 10 in 1995, 8 in 1986.
//www.bbc.co.uk/news/10579121
Amir,
Stop blaming foreigners for Iran's problems. Instead of putting your head in the sand, you should accept responsiblity and own up to the fact that Iranians have created this regime. This regime can only be dismantled when Iranians allow self criticism and are honest with themselves. The first step in solving a problem is admitting that one exists and namely that you are part of it.

by statira on Tue Oct 11, 2011 10:12 AM PDTis done in some other Islamic countries even more than Iran. Unfortunately, the way most medias portray is that it's being done just in Iran.
I agree with JJ a thousand
by vildemose on Tue Oct 11, 2011 09:22 AM PDTI agree with JJ a thousand percent. As long as we view ourselvs as victims we won't take any initiative on our own to fix anything because victims are be definition, helpless and powerless. If we want to empower ourselves we need to get rid of this 'victim' mentality. Victims will forever remain powerless. Nobody will abuse you, if you don't let them...

by Bavafa on Tue Oct 11, 2011 09:10 AM PDTI think it would it would have been more affective :
- Had she used a woman manikin (perhaps in Islamic Hijab) as it would be far more reflective on reality as men typically don’t get stoned…(unless they are smoking good stuff)
- Had she advocated/highlighted stoning in all Muslim nation specially in Afghanistan which is far more frequent then in Iran.
