Photo essay: 18 Tir and the Green Scroll in Berkeley

by Nazy Kaviani

Friday night there was a gathering to commemorate the 18 Tir Tehran University uprising in Berkeley.  This was also another event in what has become an ongoing set of gatherings in the Bay Area and worldwide to support protesting Iranians inside Iran.  The gatherings still attract crowds who believe this to be the least they can do to support people who have given their lives and freedom over their civil rights in Iran.  The Green Scrolls were also set up for those wishing to sign them.  The crowd ended the demonstration with a candle light vigil for all those who died on 18 Tir (July 8, 1998) and during the recent June and July uprising in Iran.

Bay Area's next gathering in solidarity with Iranians inside Iran is scheduled for Sunday, July 12th when Joan Baez is performs in Stern Grove, San Francisco.  Wear green and come early.  See Shorts' blog on the concert.

My only problem is, Mousavi means more of bastard Rafsanjani?

by gol-dust on

As bad as ahamdinejad is, who is supporing Mousavi? Rafsanjani, who is the most corrupt person in Iran is behind this coup. How can I trust this man who is only after his own family interests? Could it be because ahmadinejad didn't let him to steal as much?

Our choices are between a religious dictator and a corrupt and super wealthy politician? I am against both! May be one more than the other, but I wish I had real choice. Is Mousavi being used by him too?

I remember in 79 when I asked one of my college classmates - who would be replacing the shah? he said: anyone would be better than what we have. Of course, you know the answer! I just don't want to fall in the same trap!

Mousavi is part of the Rafsanjani political machine and that scares me thinking that they might be playing with us and using us to achieve their own persoanl goals, not ours.

I say this, even though my nephew is currently being held in evin, and my entire family supports mousavi. However, I couldn't ask them the hard question on the phone due to security concerns.. Just a thought.
