Sweet Fusion

Photo essay: Mezghoon Ensemble's Emad Bonakdar and Mima Goodarz

by Nazy Kaviani
11-Aug-2011

I had a chance to spend a pleasant afternoon in the company of Emad Bonakdar and Mima (Mehrbanoo) Goodarz of Mezghoon Ensemble during one of their rehearsal sessions a couple of weeks ago.  The two talented artists were getting ready for their concert on Sunday, August 14, in San Francisco (Tickets). The beautiful melodies I was privileged to hear promise an extremely special performance of Persian fusion music.  Listening to the two of them work on their original compositions, I could feel the playful and exciting Flamenco melodies that were weaving into and lifting up the Persian music notes and words that were so familiar and comforting to me.  Take a look here to see a sample of what I am talking about!  Here's my interview photo essay with Emad and Mima.

 Dear Nazy: As usual,

by vildemose on

Dear Nazy: As usual, splendid reportage on this wonderful fusion by two very lovely people, as depicted in these quaint photos in their living quarters. Very sweet. Thank you for the post and the thoughts.

What a great photo essay Nazy jan

by Anahid Hojjati on

Dear Nazy, thanks for your interview and your photo essay. It was very interesting to read about Emad and Mima's background. It was great to read that Emad finally was able to study music in Iran during those dark days and after other adventures (detailed in the essay) we are forunate to be able to hear his music in the Bay area. Thanks Nazy jan.

Very Inviting write up!

I'm this close to breaking the other invitations (or bringing friends with me) - to hear Mezghoon live on stage.

I noticed his 3-tar has 3 tars! Is this allowed?

by Esfand Aashena on

Perhaps the string was broken and it's a pain changing it and you get lazy but I find when all 4 strings in the setar are present it sounds better.

Also, Mehman maman was/is a very funny movie.  The movie Mehman is also very funny!

MPD jaan you have a Harley?  I thought you had a Cube!  Should we believe the rooster's tail or the hazrat-e abbas swearing?!

You always come and go so quietly, leaving behind your sweet, understated whispers of poetry with a message of peace and love.

Thank you so much for coming again and for leaving my offering this beautiful poem. I am honored to be the recipient of one of your poems this time. You are so kind to me and to others on this site.

Thank you.
