Human dignity is the foundational concept of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and as such it is a defining characteristic attributed to living human beings. The core belief of human rights is the belief that every person should be treated equally and with dignity irrespective of their circumstances. Concisely, an individual has inherent inviolable rights, and this expression signifies an innate right to respect.

Human dignity is the ultimate value that makes the human rights principles logical and consistent, as well as giving these principles overall coherence.  Subsequently, dignity presents fundamental rights and commands responsibilities.

Viewed from this perspective, no person should be treated or regarded as a ‘subject’. All human beings are equal in dignity irrespective of their gender, age, ethnicity, or social status. Every society needs to be committed to upholding equal human dignity. And lastly, of course, this notion of treating people equally and with dignity need not and should not be construed as treating them identically.

The concept of equality in dignity holds to ethics of equality, cherishing all human beings in light of their common humanity.
