Hours from Iran's FIFA Club World Cup debut!

Yup. That's right. Sepahan of Esfahan will make history in a few hours when they become the first ever Iranian club team to play at the FIFA World Cup. Sepahan will face Waitakere United of New Zealand as the favorites. The game is set to start at 5:45 am, EST. By the time many of you are reading this blog entry, the game will already be over and I'm predicting our boys as the winners. What's more amazing is that their next game will be against none other than Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan, to whom Sepahan lost the AFC Champions League only a few weeks ago. It's payback time! I know. All of you are saying that I'm already predicting back to back wins for Sepahan, but I can't help myself. Beating both teams is very possible and it will put our boys against AC Milan for the semi-final game. Can you believe it? Our boys will be heavy underdogs, but who cares! I want that game. We'll never be as good as the likes of A.C. Milan unless we play them in a real tourney. I can't go to sleep. I may just stay up until the game starts.

Jamshid the point is............:o)

by Sasha on

The point is that they got their act together. In the end that is all that matters. :o)

Gooooooooal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o)

I was talking to madar e man and she told me that Telemundo and Univision may show the soccer matches. I am going to have to check their website and see what they have.

 NFL:

I was checking the NFL scores and also talked to my son about it. He says that the Patriots 16-0 are going to the Super Bowl. He also says that probably the  Dallas Cowboys 12-1 will go too. If the Cowboys do go to the Super Bowl it is a miracle. :o)

Re: Sasha

Iran was not one of the heavy hitters! Mexico was one of the "heavy" hitters in the world. For the first half Mexico could do nothing and was almost humiliated! Lucky for you and the rest of Mexico that they woke up in the second half!... Otherwise....

Go Sepahan!

Again, not a problem

by Abbas Zeineddin on

I still haven't been able to find out for sure if the game will be live on www.jjtvn.ir Channel 2 feed, but I will definitely let you know as soon as I have a definitive answer.

I have been a lifelong Persepolis fan myself and still brag about the 6-0 game, although I was still in diapers when they played the game.  All of your chants are classics.  True classics!

Thanks for the clip.  It was great, although all of these players had already retired by the time I started following Iranian football in late 70's.  From the way you're describing he game, it sounds like the game was yesterday.  It's forever imprinted in your memory.  That's beautiful man.   Yeah, Ghelich's power kicks are legendary.  I had never seen it actually until now.  So thanks again.

Re: Abbas thanks!

by jamshid on

Thank you much for the info. I hope it will be possible to see the match in the internet as I do not own a satelite.

Since you are into soccer then I'd like to share some of the things we used to shout during games before the revolution:

Taj vs Perspolis:

Pro Tajis: Perspolis! hich gohi niss! Persoplis!

Pro perspolisis would shout back: har chi derakhte kajeh too koo...ne teame tajeh!

Pro Tajis shouting back: Perspolis! long-e hamoom! perspolis!

Pro Perspolisis shouting back with the "ultimate silencer": shish ta'eeyaash! shesh taa'eeyaash! (refering to the one game in which Perspolis defeated Taj 6-0, Taj could never avenge this humiliation!)

Here are a few more that were invented by the Iranian fans in the Amjadieh stadium simply out of nothing but sheer desire for their team to win in the Iran-Israel match which took place in 1968 and in which Iran beat Israel 2-1. They even made a song out of these and played it in the radio in the weeks that followed! (I am not joking!)

After Iran's first goal: ma montazereh dovomish hastim! ma montazereh dovomish hastim!....

Before the second goal: bacheha hamleh konid! bacheha hamleh konid!...

After the second goal: bacheha mochakerim! bacheha mochakerim!...

And I never forget that day. It was as exiting as when Iran beat the US in the world cup. I can still hear the echos of Roshanzadeh:

eftekhaari...! az jebheyh chap...! pa be toop...! MIKESHEHHHH...! behzadi...! behzadi...! tooye darvaazeh! gol gol gol...! .....

I am sure you will all enjoy watching this 60 seconds clip in which both Iran's goals are shown. It's an old poor quality video but better than nothing. Iran is wearing the dark (green) shirts:

P.S. In the video, watch Iran's second goal by Ghelichkhani's "power" kick. Also note the guy jumping in exitement after both goals. He is Hossein Kalaani!

Not a problem

by Abbas Zeineddin on

The game is on Monday, 10th of December @ 5:30 am EST.  I will post a preview of the game on Saturday or Sunday.  Sepahan are here because they were the Hazfi Cup Champion last year and they were the AFC Champions League runner-up last month.  Basically, they are not among the traditional powerhouses in Iran's Premier League, although they have had great success in the past a few years.  However, they have figured out how to exploit their opponents' weaknesses and advance in single elimination tourneys.  They have a good chance against Urawa Red Diamonds.

Re: Abbas

Thanks for the link! Could you please let me know where I can find the date and time as well?

Yes, one game at a time! But I can't help dreaming a game against AC Milan! I wish I was following the Iranian clubs more closely, so I don't know much about Sepahan's capabilities or weaknesses. But this is as exiting as the world cup itself.

Abbas Zeineddin

Indeed both are Iraqis!

by Abbas Zeineddin on

Vaaghe'an dameshoon garm!  I want them to play A.C. Milan, but I guess one game at a time.

You can probably watch the game on www.jjtvn.ir.  As soon as I find out for sure, I'll post it here and let you know as well.

Go Iran!  Go Sepahan!

RE: Both Iraqis?

by jamshid on

Are you sure that both Emad and Hail are both Iraqi nationals? if so, dameh har doshoon garm! Now on to revenge against japan... I want the next win so badly. If they win the next game, they'll play against AC Milan.

Please anyone out there who may know how I could watch this game live from the US, I would appreciate it you sharing the info with me! Thanks!

That's right!

by Abbas Zeineddin on

3-1 is a convincing victory.  Sepahan is not just happy to be at the Club World Cup.  They want to win some games!  On to Urawa Red Diamonds.  Did anyone notice who scored Sepahan's three goals?  Iraqi nationals Emad Mohammed (who was on Iraq's AFC Asian Cup championship team) and Abdul Wahab Abu Al Hail.

Straightforward for Sepahan

Sepahan secured a shot at revenge by beating Waitakere United 3-1 in the opening game at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2007. The Iranians will now face Urawa Red Diamonds, whom they recently lost to in the final of the AFC Champions League, in Monday's quarter-final.

Emad Mohammed gave Sepahan the perfect start, scoring twice inside the opening five minutes to give them a commanding advantage. Abdul Wahab Abu Al Hail added a third within two minutes of the restart, and Luka Bonacic's side continued to press forward for more goals.

However, a courageous Waitakere side refused to give in and 16 minutes from time they reduced the deficit. Darren Bazeley's free kick deflected off Sepahan keeper Hadi Aghily and crept into the net. The consolation goal ensured the New Zealanders will return home with something to celebrate, while their opponents will look forward to a chance at redemption.

Sepahan's swift reunion with Urawa takes place in Toyota on Monday, with the winner meeting AC Milan in the semi-finals.
