Put your version and explain. I use Nowrooz, because I am an existentialist, and I like to talk about NOW, as there is No Other Way.
So if you are bored, lonely, and want to have fun, then put your version of the spelling.

I know
by alimostofi on Thu Mar 20, 2008 03:50 PM PDTI suppose Now is a bit Wow. The sound we need is also in the word Know, and KnowRooz would be most appropriate. KnowRooz would also link to the whole Wisdom philosophical aspect of it all. Now that's a thought.

Is it better to sound like
by Anonymouse on Thu Mar 20, 2008 12:05 PM PDTNow Rooz? Imagine yawning. The word No in this case means New, a new day, a new rooz. If we go by what you are saying we should say Newrooz.
If an Iranian marrys an Ann, should she change her name because it 'means' something else in Persian? Or should we call the singer Shakira something else because it means something else in Persian?
You go by what it sounds like. Some people spell their children's name so wrong and the poor kids have to live with it for ever and have to correct people everytime they'll use their name or spell it "correctly" when they say their name for any purpose. African American and Hispanics spell their kids name wrong, many times intentionally I think. It reminds me when in the past people would go to get shenasnameh for their kids and the guy who issued it would spell something despite the parent's objection. They do it now, even more so trying to make it close to something non-western.
So I say spell it however it sounds and more importantly spell it how it has been spelled for so long. Don't change course just because someone did something wrong for another reason --spelling bee competition and an idiot judge.

Norooz
by Anonymouse on Thu Mar 20, 2008 05:23 AM PDTUsually I spell all my Farsi words in English closest to an actual word match in English. I think that makes it easier for the reader to associate. Like when I want to say Law Mazhab, instead of la mazhab. In the case of Norooz, it is No like , Yes sir, No sir, coke, pepsi, hot dog, mustard, relish. Just joking!
As far as Norooz, it has always been Norooz until someone decided to put it on that spelling bee competition couple years ago AND spell it WRONG just to piss off Iranians.
The poor guy spelled it right, Norooz. The bastard judges said WRONG! and now we see in this very website our best and brightest are spelling it all kinds of ways, Nowrouz, Nowrooz, Nowruz, Norouz and so on. Like a sheep we follow. Goshad goshad rah nareed shoar neest!
If we say a variation of Now for No, it reminds me of that Everybody loves Raymond show where Raymond was trying to tell his cousin how to pronounce now. Now, not Now, noww, now. They did it few times and then his cousin said you are saying it just like me, you are crazy and left. So when people say Nowrouz, I feel like Now now nooww. Like yawning hard and saying NOW.
Anyway, happy NOROOZ and eid-et mobarak!
