The mantra that Islam and violence are inextricably linked ignores one crucial fact: Take away Islam, and the world would still be left with the main forces that drive today’s conflicts, including colonialism, cross-national ideologies, ethnic conflicts and terrorism, says Graham Fuller, a professor of history at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, and a former Vice-Chairman of the National Intelligence at the CIA.
In his article entitled A World Without Islam, published in Foreign Policy (subscription required), Fuller challenges us “for the sake of argument, in an act of historical imagination, picture a Middle East in which Islam had never appeared. Would we then be spared many of the current challenges before us? Would the Middle East be more peaceful? How different might the character of East West relations be? Without Islam, surely the international order would present a very different picture than it does today. Or would it?”
Fuller maintains that a religious/ideological fissure between the West and the Middle East would probably still exist, and the world order would still have experienced clash of civilizations, 9/11, and holy wars under the pretext of alternative religion or ideology, such as Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Marxim, or ethnic nationalism.

IranDokht I agree with you & yet disagree :)
by samsam1111 on Wed Aug 13, 2008 07:55 AM PDT""Imagine a world without religion and without borders""
After all these years..Now that I have come to a closure with the concept of old Iran being a "" done & over with reality", I follow the expressions that "If you can,t change it, join it" or "Diggy keh barayeh Iran najoosheh bezar sareh sag toosh bejoosheh" ..So I am an avid Globalist..One planet, one government, no divides. But You need a bully at the top to stop ethnic wars..(Bush jr as global president?:))
However I gote say ..World without spirituality & religion would be a pretty boring place to be.
On a side not* With us being Romantic Iranians who cherish our old values after We lose them, Islam was a blessing in disguise..other wise how else We would find the kinds of great Ferdowsi to write a 1000 page epic about our glorious past or post revolution all of a sudden immence interest in old Iran.
Imagine a world without Judaism
by XerXes (not verified) on Wed Aug 13, 2008 07:46 AM PDTIf you want to be like Hitler or are ignorant enough to have forgotten history, I believe that it has been tried on your people once. Would you like to experience it again?
Why are Jewish people on this site, beside Rosie, so hateful and fascist? No wonder people don't like 'these' people and don't trust them.
Thank you Hope6

This is yet another academic
by KavehV (not verified) on Wed Aug 13, 2008 01:05 AM PDTThis is yet another academic crackpot making outlandish claims without a hint of tangible proof.
I would like to see a discussion that can build on several centuries of human history, without Islamic middle east, and still arrive at the terrorist events of September 11, 2001., or even a "clash of civilizations".
Why not start from a more tangible perspective: had there not been an Islamic revolution in Iran, the events of 9/11/2001 MAY not have happened!
The fact is that Iran without Islam is a much more tolerable society. Islam is an instrument of terror, murder and barbaric rage imposed by their followers on others (usually a majority) for the pleasure of the ruling Islamists -- whether Imams, mullahs, theocrats, islamic kings and leaders -- nevertheless, they are all muslims implementing their (murderous) god's will on others.

Speaking of Islam
by Anonypishi (not verified) on Tue Aug 12, 2008 11:42 PM PDTJJ it's so nice to see trailer of movies in the ad section. Tired of seeing singlemuslim.com (kheili bad tarkib). Please ask google to do more of that. I have seen the singlemuslim.com even on Americablog which is a pro gay site and it's really funny. More movie trailers please. I clicked on the ad by the way and I watched it.
And yes yes imagine a world with no Islam or any religion. Yea.
I get it if you delete this message, totally of the topic ;)
brother pishroo, Imagine a world without christians and hindus,
by Mola Nasredeen on Tue Aug 12, 2008 11:46 PM PDTImagine a world without buddhists, what a nirvana that would have been. Imagine a world without Baha'is. Imagine a world where everybody is a sinners but us, the chosen ones, children of Moses.
Imagine there were no Palestinians. We wouldn't have had so much trouble. Can you imagine that? Imagine if nobody lived in Iran and Iraq and we could've had their oil. Can you imagine that?
Brother pishroo I have to confess that I don't like zoroasterians either. I blame them for global warming! With all the fires they've started over the centuries.
PS: My camel believes your name is phony, he claims there's no Iranian last name spelled pishroo. He says in Persian we have "pishee, pashoo, pishrow, pishteh but not pishroo. He says your writing is so similar to brother mazloom, but what does he know? He's only a camel.
Imagination...

Start small: Imagine Iran without Islam
by Hope6 (not verified) on Tue Aug 12, 2008 10:54 PM PDTMr. Pishroo
Let's start from home. Imagine Iran without Islam.
What do I imagine? I see COLORS. I see LOVE. I see HAPPINESS. I see NEATNESS. I see MODERNITY. I see COOPERATION. I see PARTICIPATION. I see POWERFUL IRAN. I see PROUD IRANIANS.
Harmony?
by IRANdokht on Tue Aug 12, 2008 10:47 PM PDTWhen you preach about sensitivity to the pain you have participated in conflicting, or about harmony (?) and while I recall the other posts I have seen from you, it amazes me how people can preach what they can't deliver themselves.
Your own articles and blog are far from harmonious or tolerant. As for slamming Noam Chomsky in "honey to ashes", I only made a suggestion. I am glad you are paying attention to the comments, because a lot of those comments were much more detailed than mine. I have read Chomsky's books and listened to his interviews for years, what you wrote about him was baseless and frankly just silly.

The imaginative ability
by AmirAshkan Pishroo on Tue Aug 12, 2008 10:13 PM PDTDear Irandokht,
To imagine another world or system is to extend our participation in what Habermas calls the "domination-free communication," meaning we should be free to discuss any idea, political figure, and culture without being intimidated, without being told: "Please stay away from topics that are way over your head: It makes you sound childish and your article senseless and ridiculous," wrote Irandokht.
In communication free from any domination we focus our analysis/comment on the proposition (Gofteh, what has been said) not on the author (Gooyandeh, who has said it).
Speaking of bullies, to find out for yourself who is bullying who, go to the comment section of my article, From Honey to Ashes, you will see bunch of them, keep scrolling down, at last but not least, you come across your own comment. Please read it, again, my friend.
We liberals hope, our doubts about our own characters our own culture can be resolved only by enlarging our imagination. This is because imagination, rather than reason, is the chief instrument of cultural change.
This much, at least, we must have learned from the Romantics: Imagination is not discovered by reason but created by increasing our sensitivity to the particular details of the pain and humiliation of other we have participated in inflicting upon them.
We need to bring harmony to our words and deeds.
