Big claim!
by Ari Siletz on Tue Jan 24, 2012 07:47 PM PSTMash Ghasem: The report makes an extraordinary claim. Will wait for more confirmation before I believe it. But if things go that way, it would begin the biggest tectonics since the fall of the soviets. This time for for the better!
Divaneh: Welcome back. While you were gone, the IC Rial devalued 25% a day.
Now we know why Dollar was devalued.

"if no one buys our oil"
by Mash Ghasem on Tue Jan 24, 2012 03:17 PM PST4بهمن: هند بهای نفت ايران را با طلا می پردازد

by Ari Siletz on Tue Jan 24, 2012 02:23 PM PSTYes, very interesting times. Too bad the bourse didn't work--as predicted. I would give a lot to find out what solution oriented Iranian economists are thinking these days (quite a few just point out the obvious: we're screwed). Many shook their heads at raising interest rates to 21% arguing that the real inflation rate is close 30-40% and people know it, so they're not likely to put their monies back in the bank.
On the other hand, this crisis was a long time coming. Iranian import tycoons have devastated our domestic manufacturers, so we import everything and pay for it with nothing but oil money. I have so many sob stories to relate from private conversations with domestic manufaturers. Currently, if no one buys our oil, the price of domestically produced opium may stay the same but a sheet of imported paper will cost...

Ari jaan true. Oil = $. No $ = no oil.
by Esfand Aashena on Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:03 AM PSTIslamic Republic had tried to sell oil in Rials or Euro fearing this scenario. It'd had been even more disasterous had they actually changed to getting paid in Rials. They even tried to create an Oil bourse where they could sell their bourse there but nothing worked. Failure upon failure.
Unfortunately for regular Iranians they can't buy or sell daily goods in peace. Sellers can't set their price because things change by the hour and buyers don't know if they should buy in bulk (with money they don't have) because the same item will go up in price the next day.
For all intent and purposes Obama delivered on what he said he'd do with Iran. First negotiations then tough sanctions. It's not war but yet very painful.
Everything is sacred
Thanks folks
by Ari Siletz on Tue Jan 24, 2012 09:53 AM PSTGlue a dollar bill to any Iranian currency denomination, and it will hold its value relative to the dollar. Actually, this has been the case all along until the recent crisis. What glued the dollar bill to the rial (called currency pegging) was oil. This is because oil is traded in dollars, so oil=$. Now that international oil buyers can't put dollars into Iran's Central Bank because of the sanctions, there are no dollar bills to glue to the rial. Hence the fall of the Rial.
